Carnivore Chris
Argentina without Messi in the qualifiers: 8 games, 1 win, 4 draws, 3 losses. 7 points. With Messi: 10 matches, 6 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss(and that loss was away to Brazil), 21 points.

El REY VIDAL ) You're damn right he's influential. Influential at making Chile miss the World Cup.
Dr. Gonzo
This one's a bit of a sleeper... especially with Jahanbakhsh making headlines by being the top scorer in Holland - but for the Iran national team, it's hard to look passed Sardar Azmoun. His record at the club level isn't great, but for Iran... he's got 23 goals in 33 games. There's something about him and the Iran national side, maybe it's the extra defensive setup and him being a quick and creative player - but he's pivotal for Iran. Subscriber Mel81x+ Posted June 13, 2018 Subscriber Share Posted June 13, 2018 Its funny how we all automatically went for goal-scorers and forwards/attacking-mids as most influential. What about the guys who do the hard word at the back ensuring goals don't get leaked or are distribution masters and goal-chance creators? For that matter, what about great goalkeepers. I get that goals ultimately decide games but if you get a goal to run a game to a tie for group progression or you score an early goal from team work and then have to defend your lead to win a knockout game surely the defensive part of the game gets a better look into than the attacking portion. SirBalon
The most influential and determining part of a football team is its midfield. If that functions to perfection no mTter the quality, they become a threat to anyone and it doesn't matter what that team's status is by comparison. For Spain Iniesta is one of football's all time greats, a God of the sport... But if Busquets isn't at his best, then Spain will suffer. This makes Sergio Busquets the most influential player for Spain.
