  1. Starting this tonight. Has been recommended to me as one the most innovative and smartest sci-fi novels in recent times.

  3. I do 200 push ups 2-3 times a week. 40 at a time with a few minutes break inbetween sets. You can increase your performance relatively quickly if you keep at it. When I started, 20 was like the maximum.

  4. Comparing is not the same as likening. Of course someone throwing a bash is worse but the rules are patently absurd. Depriving people on their death beds of seeing closed loved ones for example. Are the rules proportionate to the threat faced by humanity? I’m not sure they are and given how high the UK’s death toll is, and several other European states who’ve imposed harsh measures, compared to some of those who haven’t, i’m not sure we can even be sure they work. Like it or not, there is an important question to be asked about balance and offsetting negatives. We’ve reached a point now where it’s make or break. I’m not sure why talking about the ‘economy’ has become some sort of heinous sin for the left, because the economy should the absolute starting point for anyone on the left. Lockdowns are a blunt instrument that largely effect the very poorest. I’ve no time for people in comfy work from home jobs and big houses clamouring for lockdowns. They don’t feel the cost of them. Anyway, it’s too late now. We’ll be back in lockdown for January and this cycle will be repeated ad infinitum.

  7. I think we could spend a lot of time talking about who did what and where they did it but for me it's about setting a positive example for others to follow.. Johnson and his team have set the worst possible example of doing the right thing and when that happens people are not going to abide by the rules at all... During such a long and serious period of disruption for people the world over it would not have been too much to ask that the leader of this country was doing the right thing...

  8. Staggering. And you see the planets too (Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Earth then Jupiter according to the comments). For black and white footage, the impression the Milky Way creates to be so visible is surreal.

  9. Yeah their military strength is really in its rocket/missile capability. They are fairly accurate and the ones they fire from vehicles can fly under US missile defense systems. From Iran’s perspective, yes they are annoyed the US backed out of the JCPOA and imposed the harshest sanctions its ever imposed on the country. It’s why domestically the reformists in Iran have lost all political capital - the hardliners said that the US would break a deal. They don’t want to renegotiate the deal that they didn’t break, they want all parties to go back to those terms. The US wants a more thorough and limiting deal that includes rocket/missile restrictions - something the Saudis and Israelis also both want & don’t want to give the guarantee that the next president won’t just scrap the same deal again. Neither side trusts each other for a split second & I think the diplomacy here will fail, unfortunately. The other parties to the agreement, the EU, UK, Russia and China, can’t really do much to convince either side to change their stance.

  10. While I think everyone should get a Covid vaccine if they’re able, I don’t think the government should necessarily be forcing people to get vaccinated. It’s a very slippery slope and it puts way too much trust in governments. Temporary emergency measures like temporary lockdowns for stopping a virus there’s no vaccine for - that’s fair and reasonable. But taking away peoples’ choices on what they put in their body? That’s pretty authoritarian. Letting governments act authoritarian “for good reasons” is giving governments a power that will be abused sooner or later.

  11. I'm fully aware of all the dynamics of this region but this is just beyond words and depressing. This region including what's happening in Myanmar is becoming an ethno nationalist hellhole, I have never thought about moving abroad bcz of financial reasons, life is good enough here but I might consider it for this.
