People always try and work my accent out as being born in England and left there when I was 11 and then emigrated to Australia in the late 50s, then moved to Scotland around 1975, my accent is mixed, if I am speaking to an Australian the Aussie accent will come out speech wise and vice versa the others if I am speaking to the latter.

You must have an interesting accent. I've always wondered what @nudge sounds like as her accent must be a mixture of German, Austrian, Lithuanian, Cambodian and Mandalorian

It's odd, as people often assume since I'm from the Southern U.S., that I'd talk like 'Gone with the Wind' or 'Sweet Home Alabama', when in fact, I just sound pretty standard American U.S. English with the occasional 'Ya'll' or 'wanna' thrown in, but definitely without the southern drawl.

But part of my accent is certainly a reflection of having a mother from Russia, Father from south Alabama, and living/traveling often as a child, sometimes spending years in Yaroslavl, Russia and throughout Europe.

Just because it isn’t stereotypical doesn’t mean the Southern drawl isn’t there, I don’t think there is a ‘standard US English’ accent at all

Maybe not, but I've been told I sound like a generic American, and not like I'm from the South.

That could be true but not everyone has a thick accent, the differences are more subtle in some accents, they aren’t all full blown twang or drawls.  I’d be curious to how you pronounce ‘ice’ or ‘egg’, those are two words that highlight the difference of vowel pronunciation in a more typical southern accent, some will be very exaggerated but some will still retain the same sound just to less of an extreme

Ha - I'm very aware that not everyone has a thick accent in my own city. I'm just talking about how others, mainly Europeans and Chinese, have expected me to talk when they here I'm from Georgia.

Granted, a huge factor is the fact that I'm from a major city in Atlanta, which is vastly different and has more influences from all over the country/globe, whereas in other cities like Macon, Savannah, and such, you have more of the 'traditional' southern accent.

Foreigners can’t tell the differences of accents as well. I can only tell from exposure to Americans but even then I struggle often. I think you’d struggle to tell the difference between Beijing or Hong Kong accents, right? Or Berlin and Munich? At the same time Toinho sounds different to me, but to you we’d probably sound the same.  At work there is a guy from Michigan and people say he has a different accent but to me there is no difference between Michigan and Illinois.

Probably mot even realising it you’d probably have a few ‘tells’ that you’ve spent a lot of time in the southern states even if not overtly obvious.

Oh definitely I struggled to tell the differences in foreign accents. It's even if you give me 3 people from England, and I have to tell where their accent is from, I'd fail miserably unless it was someone from London, someone from Liverpool, and another from Newcastle. 😂

Until you say cunt.

As for the American accent debate - is the “standard” American accent @Eco talking about the “TV/Hollywood” accent we hear? I know there are little variations there but would imagine most American actors change their voice a bit…

Yeah - that's probably a solid way to describe it.
