ScoRoss Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Pretty sure 2/3rds of EPL teams have a gambling sponsor or their shirt (or close to it), so could be a potential huge loss of income for them.
Administrator Stan Posted January 31, 2021 Administrator Posted January 31, 2021 What about the sponsor of the Football League...?
Honey Honey Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 This would have happened already if Tom Watson came to power and I suspect it will one day. The internet has sped up gambling addictions no end.
Subscriber Pyfish+ Posted January 31, 2021 Subscriber Posted January 31, 2021 It makes sense to ban them for sure. But it would be a huge loss for a lot of teams, especially those who are struggling anyway at the moment.
Inverted Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 People in the not too distant future will look back at football now and be amazed at how we allowed bookies to to absolutely throttle the sport in the way it has.

So true. Did you see the commentator markets they did during the Euros or World Cup

I find it ironic all betting companies preach about gambling responsibly on all their ads and websites as if its some kind of disclaimer but then offer every kind of market in every kind of sport under the sun. I know they have that responsibility but they promote far too much far too frequently. Can't escape it. Still find it so ironic they bang on about being sensible but they still have shirt sponsorships, stadium sponsorships, leagues sponsorships all by betting companies.

It's almost happening now. In Britain, it's almost past its acceptance point. But when you compare with how American sports media is treating it now that's it's legal, where doesn't half come across as naive, at least there are things happening. Britain might soon be a small pond to the US, when it goes nationwide.

I've gone a bit blind to it, but you could watch a Premier League match and see a gambling advert every second of the game, plus obviously the ads in the break. Obviously it's even worse in the other English leagues with their SkyBet sponsorship. It's all very well saying "bet responsibly", but how much of an effect do you expect that to have when you're constantly bombarding your target market with advertising? I'm sure problem gambling is on the rise during the pandemic as well, what with there being little else to do, and the fact that the excitement around the match is so dulled without fans and without going to the pub that the temptation to boost it with a bet must be strong. I haven't seen any attempts by the relevant organisations to mitigate that which is disappointing
6666 Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 If players still get punished for talking about what club they're moving to with their friends because bookies get upset, it means there's still a long way to go.
Dr. Gonzo Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 This reminds me of when Weird World, or some other weirdo from the olden days, was insisting that Wonga wasn’t predatory and that payday loans should not just be allowed on football shirts but should be celebrated. I agree that decades from now we’ll look back on seeing so much advertising for online gambling and think it was mental how normal it is today.
