UK Online Porn Age Verification

The government will next week confirm the launch date for a UK-wide age block on online pornography as privacy campaigners continue to raise concerns about how websites and age verification companies will use the data they collect.

The plan for implementing the long-delayed age block, which has been beset by technical difficulties, is expected to be announced alongside the government’s other proposals for tackling online content harmful to children, although it could be several months before the system is fully up and running.

The age block will require commercial pornography sites to show that they are taking sufficient steps to verify their users are over 18, such as by uploading a passport or driving licence or by visiting a newsagent to buy a pass only available to adults. Websites which fail to comply risk substantial fines or having their websites banned by all British internet service providers.

Imagine Brazzers telling you to upload your passport before you can see nudes

I believe that although this will be given the green light in April they are concerned about the data privacy angle and that people will be able to hack sites and harvest data for criminal use, so as I understand what I have been reading about it they may struggle to bring it in as a workable situation for months yet until they can work out how it should be safely implemented.. Knowing the way Brexit has gone it will be well over 2 years away...

China banned porn entirely, I wouldn't say it's unfeasible

I don't think so... it should be no big surprise that they are the worst culprits...

So did most of Southeast Asia but to be fair whenever I stumble into an internet cafe it always seems to be full of young locals watching porn without even hiding it xD

Buying a pass from the newsagent seems fair. Before the internet you had to buy dirty mags from the newsagent. The seller knew what you were doing.

The wankers database has blackmail written all over it though.

I wonder if it will come in a plain brown bag???

I’m pretty sure anyone living in a country with heavy online censorship just uses a VPN. All of my family in Iran does. I did when I was in China and so did... almost every Chinese person I met

Absolutely. I'm also using one just in case.

They probably use VPNs - since that’s what most people there do to get around the Great Firewall.

Don't some VPN's have trouble accessing certain types of content though??? and not porn related but things like YouTube for example?? I hear it can be sluggish as well. It's obviously safer for you criminal types trying to hide what you are doing while wandering around the dark web and what not but is limited or restrictive in some circumstances??

No, not really although it depends on how many servers (and their geographical location) the VPN provider has... I've used a few different ones and it does vary a bit; there can be a slight reduction of speed but it's still more than adequate and isn't even noticeable most of the time. Never had any problems accessing any sites either (and that's my main use for a VPN anyway as I need to access some geoblocked sites for work); most reliable VPN services are able to bypass VPN blocks that certain sites like Netflix use or you can get a dedicated IP address for a small additional cost. And streaming speeds are actually often increased as the VPN circumvents the bandwidth throttling that many ISPs implement. I'm obviously only talking about paid VPN providers though.

I’ve only ever used it in China - it basically unlocked the internet and let me visit things like blocked google sites (including YouTube).

You connect to a server in a different country, which your internet connection is then routed too. Sometimes that can slow you down. In China and Iran the censors also do work to stifle VPNs - so I noticed especially after dinner my internet would be at a crawling pace unless I turned it off

Useful information cheers... Thought about the idea of using one a while back but read so many mixed reviews of it that it didn't really help making up my mind at all..

That's the problem with this country, it's becoming like China in some senses and that's miles away from being a positive thing. Fuck China.

The internet is an unregulated wilderness with fewer laws to protect people than the wild west USA back in the 1700's.

This law is the equivalent of needing to show ID to get into the strippers. Really should have been in place since day 1. I hope Australia does something similar.

You might need to try a few until you find the one which suits your needs best; many providers offer a free trial to try them out. That said, check out ExpressVPN if you decide to go for it. By far the best speeds I've encountered with VPN. Mullvad is also a great option and absolutely unbeatable when it comes to cost-quality ratio. VyperVPN is nice, they have an impressive number of servers all around the world, I liked their client and I get great speeds with them but they do keep some logs and they also don't allow torrenting. NordVPN is supposed to be good but my experience wasn't great; lack of consistency in speeds and I didn't like their client but your mileage may vary.
