Moderator Tommy Posted August 11, 2020 Moderator Share Posted August 11, 2020 What is, in your opinion, the best movie your country has ever produced? As a German, I'd say the best German movie I have ever seen is "Good Bye, Lenin" Very close second is "The Lives of others". Honorable mention to "Das Boot". Subscriber nudge+ Posted August 11, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted August 11, 2020 Tough. Lithuanians are traditionally strong in theater, and it often shows in cinema, both in terms of acting and directing. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's surely not as accessible as it could be, and definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Nevermind the language barrier. My personal all-time favourite - Children from the Hotel America (1990): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337383/ Captures the spirit of the youth and freedom movement in the 70s really well. No trailer, it's an old one... Not sure if a version with English subtitles even exists... But I love this one. Second favourite - Walnut Bread (1978): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165904/ Pretty much a Lithuanian version of Romeo and Juliet, just not as tragic, and a lovely portrayal of innocent teenage love, youth and nostalgia. From modern ones - Forest of the Gods (2005): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0453366/ An adaptation of one of the best Lithuanian novels ever, tells the story of a man who survived the horrors of both the Nazi concentration camp and brutal Soviet imprisonment. Nowhere near as good as the book, but probably pretty accessible to the foreigners. Just don't watch the trailer, it's bloody awful. Full movie with English subtitles, just in case someone should ever be interested, for whatever reason: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtZusNil6fM
Subscriber Mel81x+ Posted August 12, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted August 12, 2020 Tough call this but I'll let @IgnisExcubitor take the reigns here he's got the more diverse outlook on our cinema (and it really is terribly wide). Sorry, didn't call out two of my favourites off the top of my head Kireedam - Malayalam movie - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237376/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Black Friday - About the Bombay blasts - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0400234/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Subscriber CaaC (John)+ Posted August 12, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted August 12, 2020 Has to be Train Spotting & Sunshine on Leith, both filmed around here in Leith where we live and a couple of pubs me and the wife have been for a bevvy. Then you have Braveheart with Mel Gibson but really that was mostly filmed in Ireland than Scotland, then you have Highlander another film that was filmed in Scotland, London and then New York. Train Spotting Sunshine on Leith Highlander Braveheart The Vanishing That's all I have seen and can think of at the moment.

Administrator Batard Posted September 19, 2020 Administrator Share Posted September 19, 2020 Two fine German movies I enjoyed, aside from Houswife anal volume 4 and Busty Berliners, were the Lives of Others, which had me hooked. And, rather obviously, Downfall. Best Spanish language movie: Pans Labyrinth. And French movie? Ne le dis à personne. It's so underwhelming in parts, even cliche but at the same time I just love it.
