The Premier League is to bring in a new owners' charter to stop future attempts to join a breakaway Super League.

It follows Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham agreeing to join the failed European Super League last month.

All owners will have to sign up to the new rule "committing them to the core principles" of the league with breaches punished by "significant" sanctions.

The league said "a few clubs cannot be allowed to create such division".

The Super League proposal, which also included some of Europe's biggest clubs, collapsed within 72 hours after widespread criticism from fans, players and governing bodies and politicians.

The Premier League said it is "determined" to "hold those clubs accountable for their decisions and actions".

"We and the FA are pursuing these objectives quickly and appropriately, consulting with fans and government," it said.

Has anyone actually been punished yet?

UEFA have basically said they are still desperately scrambling to work out what they can legally do.

I know they've wanted a productive punishment but I feel like they could have gone so much further for now.

Imagine in medieval times an attempted cue to throw the monarchy out the castle, only for it to fail really badly, but those responsible being allowed to stay in the village so they can plot again to do it in a couple of years time.

Absolutely laughable.

UEFA start proceedings against Barca, Real & Juve

Quote

Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid over their involvement in the proposed European Super League.

The clubs were part of the 12 'founding' members of the breakaway league, which later collapsed.

The other nine clubs renounced the project but Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid have refused to do so.

Uefa said proceedings had been opened against the three "for a potential violation of Uefa's legal framework".

In a statement released on Tuesday, Uefa said: "Following an investigation conducted by Uefa ethics and disciplinary inspectors in connection with the so-called 'Super League' project, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus for a potential violation of Uefa's legal framework.

"Further information will be made available in due course."

The other nine clubs involved - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid - have been punished by European football's governing body for their participation.

They have agreed to make a combined 15m euro (£13.4m) goodwill contribution to benefit children's and grassroots football across Europe.

They will also have 5% of Uefa competition revenues withheld for one season, starting in 2023-24, and this money will be redistributed, including in the UK.

Each has also committed to Uefa and its competitions, with the clubs facing fines of 100m euros (£86.9m) apiece if they seek to join an unauthorised competition in the future. They will be fined half that if they breach any other terms of the declaration.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who was appointed as chairman of the ESL, recently said that the 12 clubs that agreed to join the project have "binding contracts" and "cannot leave".

£20m pittance xD

Why did they have any hand in deciding what punishment they got?

Points deductions were never going to be realistic. Still, it's an insulting amount. At least there's stuff now in place to stop anything similar in the future I suppose

Apparently it's a £20m fine each as a suspended punishment, but the current fine is £20m COMBINED. So it's around £3.5m each. Absolutely laughable. Barely scratches the surface.

It’s more laughable than I thought it would be. I was expecting at least 10m each right off the bat.

Hahaha they've actually called it a 'gesture of goodwill'.

This is becoming such a farce. PL/FA have no backbone.

Should have gone in much harder. Not dressed it up as such. Pathetic.

The climb down from the respective leagues, FA’s and UEFA has been nothing short of embarrassing, it become more and more likely that the punishment was either going to be lenient or non existent as the weeks went on.

But hey, we have the Euros now that UEFA fucked about with for their own greed so shut up and watch everyone.

That'll teach them.

No doubt we will be in a similar situation in 4 to 5 years time and on the next occasion they'll be more prepared for the inevitable backlash which will make any potential withdrawals for clubs more difficult to implement.

The lack of backbone is absolutely laughable.
