Topic for gangster related Film and TV/Documentary related chat.

Some of the best film and TV series of all time are of this genre. But I just thought a kind of off topic chat for such things would be beneficial. Not sure how it will play out, whether it will be better off in the Pub or Films and TV.

There’s a new series on Netflix about the Worlds most wanted that inspired me creating this thread. Detailing people like El Mayo, Simeon Mogilevich and Matteo Dennaro.

Worth a watch @Carnivore Chris I know you’ll like it!

Love a good mafia movie.

The Godfather (I like 2 better than 1, actually) and Goodfellas are the obvious classics, but there are so many other great ones... My personal favourites (in no particular order):

Casino
A Bronx Tale
Donnie Brasco
Road to Perdition
Miller's Crossing
Mobsters (one of my favourites, less-popular ones!)
Bugsy
Gotti (the older one from HBO, not the newer one with Travolta)
Witness to the Mob
The Irishman

For something a bit different, I really liked Suicide Kings (Christopher Walken is boss!).

As for TV, The Last Don mini series was fantastic... Based on Mario Puzo novel too.

I really have to watch Once Upon a Time in America properly at some point. Never managed to sit through it in the past.

El Chapo is the best series I'd say. El patrón del mar is also alot more accurate than Narcos.

Power was also a fantastic series.

British gangster films used to be on point, in the likes of Snatch, Lock, Stock and 2 smoking barrells and Layer Cake. But they don't seem to bring out great films about gangsters these days over here. Top boy is a brilliant series though.

An underrated series is "Bad Blood" on Netflix. They only brought out 2 seasons and then never continued it for some reason, although I enjoyed it. It's set in Canada.

Another film not mentioned already is Carlito's Way.

Narcos was quality. Haven't watched many others but Narcos Mexico is on the list to be watched at some point.

Yep! Snatch & Lock Stock are 2 timeless films you can just watch at leisure but still really enjoy.

They are the type you end up watching 20 times as they aren't too serious. In fact, both are like comedies, even though that wasn't the intention.

I really, really liked Guy Richie's latest one, The Gentlemen. Definitely on par with Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels! Give it a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

I watched Once Upon a time in America recently for the first time in about a decade thinking I’ll understand it better now. I still feel like I need to watch it again.  xD

Interesting history of the release of the film. The shortened version was a critical flop but the original several hour long version is regarded as one of the best films of all time.

I watched el patron del mar after Narcos and find it more historically accurate but Narcos was so much more well done and put together.

Looking forward to the next series of Narcos Mexico now that Gallardo is in prison. We may actually see El Chapo in a more prominent role in the series.

Yeah. Very good film! Enjoyed Depo in that role.

I actually liked Depp in Public Enemies when he played John Dillenger. That was very gangster like. He plays a bad guy so well.

Also, as something quite entertaining watch Gangster Squad. It's all about Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and their 'vigilante' crew trying to take down Micky Cohen and the mob, played brilliantly by Sean Penn.

Depp is one of my favourite actors he’s great in all sorts and can play many roles. Public Enemies is another great film.

I thought The Gentlemen was class when I watched it, great performances alround, especially from Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunman, Michelle Dockery, Henry Golding and Colin Farrell. Thought it stands up as one of the great gangster films and good progression from Guy Ritchie from Lock Stock and Snatch

I actually forgot about that and was supposed to watch it a while ago. I'll give it a watch nudge. Whenever Guy Richie is involved and it's a gangster film, it's generally on point.

Blow would be considered a Gangster film as well. Ones of my favourite films of alltime that.

Scarface obviously hasn't been mentioned either, which is an obvious classic.

Believe it or not, I haven't watched Narcos: Mexico yet, but I'll start it soon I think.

Recently watched "ZeroZeroZero" on Prime Video, based on the book of the same name written by Roberto Saviano. Really liked it, it shows how the drug moves on a global scale. The book is also a great read.

Has any of you guys watched the original "Scarface", starring Paul Muni? I´m thinking about it watching it.

Definitely watch it! It’s good is Mexico.

I’ve watched so so many documentaries and interviews over the years.

Sammy the Bull and Michael Franzese have good YouTube channels. Michael has the best content for me.

He does a “mob movie Monday” where he reviews films and tells you just how historically accurate the films were.

He was a Capo in the Columbo family and he defrauded the government of millions with the gas tax scheme. Very clever guy. But he got out of the life for his family.

Funnily enough, I saw this the other night and I was really disappointed. It just didn't grab me at all.

I finally saw The Irishman yesterday. De Niro, Pesci and Pacino all on form. That was good but way too long for what was needed. Could easily have chalked off 30/45mins of it but that's just me.

I stopped half way through the Irishman, was decent but too long. Thought the CGI was pretty bad, making De Niro look decades younger but he still moved like an old man

You kinda missed out then, as the last 30-45 minutes were the best part, with previous events portrayed in the movie leading nicely to the conclusion.

I love it personally, probably because of the time it came out and the age I was at the time.

But in terms of gangster films as a whole, Goodfellas and Casino will always be my favourites, although these days there are tons of great series.

I also forgot to mention Sopranos in terms of series.

Same, I used to watch documentaries about gangsters all the time and read books about them. Not so much anymore though, apart from the Cartels, mainly because all the best series and books in Spanish seem to be about Cartels and gangsters

I've also read some great books about gangsters from here, such as Cocky(about Curtis Warren in Manchester), Vic Dark(about a bank robber from the underworld in the 90s) or the Gang Wars: a story of the Machester gangs. The one about Manchester is interesting. It was years ago I read that though, easily 16 years ago or so.

American Gangster isn't a bad film itself.

Agreed.

It took it's time to get there but having spent a while watching the tension bubbling under the surface, the final third of the film you knew it was going to end one way or another, and probably not with a happy ending either.

I love a good long film. Look back to the comments on Once upon a time in America. Trying to sell it they released a short version and it flopped. Those who appreciate and love the genre made them re release the unedited long version and it’s regarded as a historical masterpiece.

My favourite film of all time thats hours long is Godfather 2, over 3 hours long but the many times I’ve watched it, it never feels like it’s too long. I love the whole Trilogy but that film and the first 2 are the best of all time.

I enjoyed the Irishman. If a films good the length of it is irrelevant. If you don’t enjoy it then it will drag. I’m very nostalgic and sentimental so loved the legends being back together for that film. I also loved Stephen Graham getting a chance to be in such a good film with his idols. I love his stories he’s come out with since the film was released.

Rewatched Blow last night. Great film.

Carlos Lehder  was actually released from prison last year.

As for Boston George himself, some interesting recent interviews on YouTube. There’s one on DJVlad that’s over an hour long.
