Possible lineup hard to guess at this point.

Pickford

Holgate Coady Tarkowski

Patterson Doucoure Iwobi Mykolenko

McNeil Alli Gordon

Wouldn't be surprised to see Onana start with Iwobi moving into the front three. Hopefully this is our last lineup without a proper striker.

This but with Gray keeping his place instead of Alli starting.

Interesting to see how we get on here. We did alright against Chelsea but Everton find it so easy to lose all confidence and sleepwalk into a crisis that a poor performance here puts a whole different complexion on the start to the season.

We don't look on the ropes at the back but there's no out ball here and it's putting us under pressure. Worth having Rondon on to be honest.

Good little spell for us ending in frustration. McNeil wasting an opening with a poorly weighted pass and a goal disallowed for offside.

1-0 down. Front three are all getting brushed aside in possession far too easily.

Doucoure off injured now. Not sure why Davies is coming on instead of Onana but a Davies/Iwobi midfield is the type of bollocks that got us into a relegation scrap last season.

You're in for another this season likely.

Really poor half. Villa have definitely had the better of it but it's a shame for us they've scored from their only genuine chance while we've wasted a couple of decent half chances.

The attack needs changing. Gordon and Gray stunk the place out last weekend and have done again so far today. Constantly trying to beat 2-3 players at once and just getting shrugged aside. If it has to be Rondon then so be it. We need to get at least one genuine striker in this week along with Gueye.

I really find it bizarre that Davies has come on for Doucoure. He's had so many chances and not cut the mustard. If Onana isn't ready to play 60 minutes I don't know why he's on the bench.

You don't play this low block set up without having an outlet.

So much naivety in Lampard's management its mind boggling he still hasn't learned much.

Three problems:

1) recruitment taking too long leaving us without a recognised striker as soon as DCL gets injured.

2) poor team selection by Lampard and took far too long to change things up as evidenced by us creating loads of half-chances at the end when he finally did.

3) Gray, Gordon and McNeil all really poor in the opening two games. It's not too much to ask for just one of them at a time to be in some form.

Hopefully Doucoure isn't out for too long because we already have Mina, Godfrey and Calvert-Lewin out for reasonably long spells.

We look alright defensively and with Onana looking like he offers something different there we have some quality in midfield, with Idrissa Gueye still to add to that area of the squad. Add a half-decent striker and then keep DCL fit up front and we should be at least safe. If we can't get the recruitment done in attack and DCL has another injury struck season like the last one then our season will look a lot like that match today and we'll potentially end up in trouble again.

For Villa & Gerrard, a huge, huge sigh of relief I think, after the opening no show. Like all the fans ooohh's turned to cheers when they realised the Watkins to Ings pass worked out quite well after all.

And I'd say a big boost to score 2 open play goals. Something Villa have certainly been lacking over the last few seasons.

For Everton & Lampard, probably the opposite. But Everton don't tend to do too well at Villa for some reason. I'd probably try to focus on superstition to explain the defeat away if I were them.
