433 please.

Pickford

Patterson Holgate Tarkowski Mykolenko

Onana Gueye Iwobi

McNeil Rondon Gordon

Although Gueye probably won't be signed in time and we shouldn't be having to start Rondon by now!

Going to be pretty toxic if we lose this I think.

Barnes back and available gives me hope we can get a good result...

Barnes available increases our chances substantially. Means he has to scratch this god awful back 5 and we should carry some proper threat going forward. Still have little trust in us defensively though so we'll likely need 2, possibly 3 for the win.

If it was up to me I'd go back to 4-3-3 and play...

Iversen

Castagne - Evans - Soyuncu - Justin

Ndidi

Maddison - Dewsbury-Hall

Perez - Vardy - Barnes

Will be Ward but my preference of the two would be Iversen - but that's largely the foundations of the side we played our best football under Rodgers in. Granted the full backs are different and not quite of the level of Ricardo / Chilwell (certainly pre injury anyway) but for me it's about as near as you'll get. We were tougher to break down and created chances. Two things seldom do these days.

What it'll likely be is Amartey as he won't play Soyuncu, with Ndidi playing a bit further forward, which means Southampton will get at least a goal.

Perez is supposedly playing though. Dunno if it's by design of the fact he always does well against Southampton. I'm not a huge fan of his by any means but for all the criticism you have to at least concede he was a regular when we played our best stuff even if you think it was in spite of him.

Leicester should take their first win here. They have no problems scoring goals and Southampton have no problems conceding. They should outscore the saints despite the questionable defending. Probably be good to score first though. Don't want no more pressure on your players in a high pressure game.

Brentford's purple patch should come to an end here. Expect a 2-0 Fulham win or something. I don't believe Fulham get a third draw in a row. Make or break. Mitrovic should come hungry after a goalless game.

Lampard got something to prove here. This is a game Everton should be winning if they're to win any. Forest at Newcastle had probably the worst display of any team so far in the competition.

Gotten really ragged and let Forest grow into the game. Tarkowski having a bit of a poor game being caught in possession twice. Rondon a decent outlet in terms of knocking it down for Gray and Gordon but the end product is poor. Davies started well but has vanished from the game now. Hope to see Onana on for him at half time or not long after.

Poor game for the neutral. Neither side making good use of their half-chances and that's all there's been.

Fulham beating Brentford 2-1 and Palace and Villa level at 1-1 in the other games.

Such a lack of quality here. Even if one side nicks this it's the biggest last on MOTD game I've seen in a while.

Getting ridiculous we haven't finished our summer recruitment when we still need 2-3 players to finish the squad.

0-1. It's absolutely stunk of it for the last 10 minutes. It's the quintessential modern era Everton defeat. Play alright but find a way to lose a disproportionate amount of 50/50 games.

Assuming we do actually get the players in the door (no guarantee), leaving it until 3-4 games into the season has put a bunch of extra unnecessary pressure on the next part of the season.

Pay the extra money PSG want to buy Gueye out of his contract and sign a fucking striker this week.

Liverpool, Wolves, Leicester, Everton, West Ham & Man United the 6 sides currently below Villa in the table.

Not good. Despite the spending, they are more in the relegation battle than anything else & much more than most below.

Losing Diego Carlos to long term injury not good, but today is just picking up from Bournemouth away on the opening weekend.

That was a big blow,  being dependent on Tyrone Mings is not good for the long term.

A draw was the right result as neither team did enough to win the game.

But rescuing a draw at home to a newly promoted side so you're not pointless in three games just isn't good enough.

The timing of our transfer business seemed to be partially dictated by FFP and getting the nod from the Premier League about a week ago that they were happy with us on profit and sustainability. But now it's time to get sorted. Looking at our games so far, it's reasonable to say we could have had a point at Villa and a win today if we'd started the season with an actual full squad. We're already bleeding points and every game we miss out because it's a makeshift line up is one fewer game to make up the difference and ensure we're not down in the shit again for the run in.

Things that are becoming a theme now. Wing backs not offering enough going forward. Vinagre has to be worth a try on the left if we're going to persist with three centre backs. And our final ball in attack absolutely stinks across the board at the moment. It's taken us three games to score a goal that wasn't an own goal and it was assisted by the goalkeeper. Gray, Gordon and McNeil have all wasted countless opportunities to slot each other in over the last three games. The success rate is piss poor and they need to improve. Granted, they probably spent pre season building the attacking patterns around Calvert-Lewin but that doesn't legislate for what I'm talking about which is just poor execution.

This was exactly the sort of result that was gunna follow a 4-0 drubbing of Man Utd

I posted last week that Brentford should be concerned.

Definitely looking from the outside as if the Rodgers/Leicester era has gone a bit stale. They shouldn't be anywhere near relegation though. There's some tricky games in their next five - Chelsea, Man Utd, Brighton, Villa, Spurs. After that they have Forest, Bournemouth, Palace and Leeds. You could argue that looks like a good run of games to get the most out of a new manager bounce if things don't improve.

Gerrard has had two transfer windows at Aston Villa now. They seem about on track to be a 13th-15th side again and could get dragged in if they're unlucky or have an injury crisis. It seems that the owners have higher expectations than that and the fans weren't happy with their form at the back end of last season, which was really poor but went under the radar in the mainstream because they were comfortably safe. They've got West Ham, Arsenal, Man City and Leicester coming up. Probably needs to watch his back.

The attention at Everton isn't really on Lampard at the moment because everyone acknowledges the recruitment issues that have been years in the making and injuries to key players early in the season. Everton have Brentford and Leeds away next, then Liverpool and Arsenal. Unless there's a shift in our away form, we could well be winless in seven games by the time we have West Ham at home. The owner is also an unpredictable lunatic. He'll need a few results in that run really or questions will be asked once the transfer window has closed and more attention is paid to his tactics and team selections.
