I don't know if this would work or not, but in theory it should. Book a flight, then book 2 refundable tickets for the other 2 seats in your part of the row. When you're at the gate, assuming you can get the refund with about an hour to go before takeoff, cancel the other 2 tickets.

Theoretically that should give you a few seats to yourself. But I don't know if airlines have shit in place to stop people from doing this.

Can't cancel a flight within 24 hours of departure time.

But even if you did this 24 hours before it would probably have the same effect. You'd have to be quite unlucky.

As much as I am aware, most airlines have the rule where you have to cancel at least 24-48 hours in advance.

Airlines usually overbook their flights, so the strategy might not work...

Well shit, let's brainstorm other ideas on how we can fuck over airlines to our benefit.

Why? That's just being a dick.

Me trying to fuck over airlines to get more legroom is just getting revenge on them for constantly decreasing the amount of legroom while constantly increasing the price of everything.

You could possibly get lucky with short/domestic flights but international or major cities, forget it.

Not to mention Nudge's point on some flights purposefully overbooking.
