Roscosmos, the company INVITRO and 3D Bioprinting Solutions announced the successful completion of the first phase of the experiment "3D-Magnetic Bioprinter", performed on board ISS. For the first time, human cartilage and rodent thyroid tissues were printed in space. The Russian bioprinter Organ.Avt was delivered to the ISS on December 3, 2018 on a manned spacecraft Soyuz MS-11. Preparation for the project continued for two years. It was important for scientists to analyze how space microgravity affects the efficiency of the process of creating living tissues and organ constructs. The joint project of INVITRO, 3D Bioprinting Solutions and the Roscosmos State Corporation, with the support of the Skolkovo Foundation, was the first ever orbit experiment initiated by a Russian private company. In addition to technical and scientific innovations, a whole range of new organizational approaches was applied to the experiment, which will be further translated to other companies working with the public sector in the space technology and innovation segment. According to Andrey Divaev, head of research and development at the Department of Business Systems of Roscosmos State Corporation, partnership with a private company in this format has become a unique experience for the State Corporation, which will help in further projects with commercial companies. Biological material printed in space, will return to Earth on December 20 at the Union MS-09. In the first half of 2019, 3D Bioprinting Solutions will summarize the results of the space experiment and publish its results. A similar American experiment is scheduled for February 2019. https://www.roscosmos.ru/25849/1 point

Indeed. It was an event whenever Chelsea conceded a goal back then. Going off topic but Carvalho is probably my favourite center back ever. Rare for a center back to play with such elegance. Tough tackling but with the just the right amount of aggressiveness. His relaxed body language and seemingly weak physique I think caught attackers off guard which worked as an advantage for him.1 point

6 goals conceded. Alisson and VVD will take most of the plaudits. And rightly so, VVD is absolutely incredible. Aside from being ridiculously talented, he’s brought leadership and confidence to our back 4. Alisson has as well, and has shown astonishingly safe hands and great distribution and has this season already helped us win points and get to the CL. But I think this season Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez, and TAA deserve big praise this season. Andy Robertson is so fucking good I don’t know how we got him for so cheap. And yesterday both he and Trent created a ridiculous amount of chances from the fullback position, so they’re making contributions at the back and going forward. And when I say ridiculous I mean I remember more chances created by individual fullbacks of ours than I remember Napoli creating the entirety of the match (which again says something about our defense). Last season everyone said it: Liverpool need to learn how to grind out wins. We’ve done that a few times now this season, looks like we’re learning.1 point

The other thought would be if we were able to somehow create life on otherwise dead planets by using any existing liquids, soil that are already there like the Genesis Device used in Star Trek for example.. If we were able to kick start life somehow it would mean that we wouldn't need to spend hundreds of years searching for ideal planets as we may be able to use planets that were closer to us... Not sure if the research is already out there or how much funding that would need for such things but would at least give us 2 options to consider..1 point

Hahaha Nah mate... I remember many years back I had a friend that used to say that Pep Guardiola was a maningiless part of the Barça team of the time. His argument was that he never did anything exciting 90% of the time and that it all seemed like meaningless nothingness. I then remember one summer we were in a bar in Ibiza having a drink and low and behold on the bar's tv they were doing an in depth analysis on Guardiola's contribution to the team for the season just ended (it was presented by Michael Robinson and on the panel was another Englishman in the shape of Gary Lineker, all fluent in Spanish)... From that day my friend understood and it went further than that because since then his favoured position where players are concerned is that position that is so vital in midfield and that makes all of the cogs work seamlessly in midfield. A similar thing to what Andrés Iniesta recently said about N'Golo Kanté and how he is more a footballer's idol than a fan's idol.1 point

One can argue that Germany has been the opinion leader in the EU, but the formal power of Germany as well as of other big countries in the EU, is actually disproportionally low. The EU has a population of around 505 million, contributions of around €17 billion and there are 751 seats in the European Parliament. Germany has a population of 81 million (~16%), pays contributions of €26 billion (~22%), but has only 96 seats (~13%). So Germany's means of influencing EU politics are actually smaller than any "share" Germany would expect to have in the EU. One thing Germany does however, and this is the crux of it, is actively engaging in EU politics and as usual, people who do things make an impact . The notion of Germany being disproportionally or especially powerful mostly comes from the lack of activity shown by other countries in EU politics. It's up to them to change that. Now now... depending on your personal views this can be regarded as leadership or domination - as it's usually advertised by far right politicians and particularly imperialism lovers. So again, the problem is not that Germany has a lot of power, it is that other large EU countries failed to take action or to show leadership. This is very true for the deadbeat UK who just chose to leave, and to lesser extent France.1 point

Go back to your country... oops, this is your country. Err.. but you like the EU, so go back to Spain! I mean not "back" because you were born here, but still, go there!1 point

My thoughts exactly. There are over two trillion galaxies in the universe, we've been around only for like 0.00001% of the entire timeline of the universe, and life - as we know it - is made up largely of four most basic elements. Given all that, I think it's highly unlikely (if not straight out impossible) that we're the only living form in all that vast space. I believe that we'll find evidence of life in the solar system (in form of some microorganisms) in my lifetime. As for other intelligent forms of life...it probably depends on how far and how advanced they are, and how advanced our technology becomes with time. Given that the universe is expanding surprisingly fast, the distances will only grow larger and it will only get harder to explore.1 point

Science & Environment Climate change: Arctic reindeer numbers crash by half By Victoria Gill Science correspondent, BBC News, Washington DC 12 December 2018 The population of wild reindeer, or caribou, in the Arctic, has crashed by more than half in the last two decades. A new report on the impact of climate change in the Arctic revealed that numbers fell from almost 5 million to around 2.1 million animals. The report was released at the American Geophysical Research Union meeting. It revealed how weather patterns and vegetation changes are making the Arctic tundra a much less hospitable place for reindeer. Reindeer and caribou are the same species, but the vast, wild herds in northern Canada and Alaska are referred to as caribou. It is these herds that are faring the worst, according to scientists monitoring their numbers. Some herds have shrunk by more than 90% - "such drastic declines that recovery isn't in sight", this Arctic Report Card stated https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-465160330 points
