Ellen Ripley! If there’s anyone in the whole universe who can survive against the most horrible monsters, it’s you. You’re an inborn warrior, you were born to fight. Also, your instincts never let you down and you always manage to do the right thing at the right moment. However, you’re also a lonely cowboy. You wouldn’t survive if you didn’t know how to cope with loneliness. You also have a mysterious side, no matter how close people get to you, they can never know everything about you. Maybe your survival skills take their source from this dark side of yours. Kicking down doors and f'ing Xenomorphs up. Yep, that sounds like something I'd enjoy a lot.3 points

Met a bunch of Finns from Kimi's hometown on my lunch and got drunk with them unexpectedly. Kimi: uniting people since 2001.3 points

For this alone I think you get to pick the robot that comes on the ship. As long as its not an android I can live with it.2 points

For most it would bring back terrible memories of the scene from Jaws when the immortal line 'you're going to need a bigger boat' was uttered. But when a team of divers spotted the largest great white shark on the planet they only hesitated to grab their cameras before they jumped into the sea. The enormous predator named Deep Blue is up to 50 years old, weights 2.5 tons and measures 20ft long. It was drawn to the water around Hawaii for what one diver described as an 'all you can eat buffet' - to feed on a dead sperm whale. Deep Blue was last spotted in Mexico in 2013 where it was fitted with a tracker which is how divers were able to identify it this time. Conservation photographer Juan Oliphant was one of the divers who took the plunge along with with marine biologist Ocean Ramsey What a monster!!! Think I might have waited until it's belly was full before jumping in.. Ah, and here we go - starting as a Mars colonist ship and turning into smuggling, terrorising bunch of pirates in just a few hours...1 point

If there is a danger we might get killed throwing our weight around in the galaxy I suggest something like this to be conducting our business in..1 point

Yes although HAL killing the crew was the result of him going insane as a result of this error... Basically his primary programming was "accurate processing of information without distortion or concealment", yet his orders for the mission required him to keep the discovery of the Monolith and the real purpose of the mission a secret for reasons of national security. This contradiction created the aforementioned Hofstadter-Moebius loop reducing HAL to experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia and paranoia. So in the end HAL made the decision to kill the crew, allowing him to obey both his hardwired primary instructions to report data truthfully, and his orders to keep the purpose of the mission a secret. Poor HAL; so misunderstood and as always it's the fault of the humans in the end!1 point
-
A bit like the 3 laws of Robotics... If any action that should conflict with it's programming then it either forces a shut down or locks people out of the ship and does not allow them back in you mean..1 point
-
He'll serve me us well... Hey we can also run the ship the old school pirate democracy style anyway...1 point
-
Just a fancy term for the error condition common to advanced autonomous computers when it is given a directive in conflict with its basic design principles, and is unable to resolve that conflict, resulting in symptoms similar to a schizophrenic psychosis in humans. That's basically just how HAL went mad...1 point

Just started watching Wayne after I stumbled upon it by accident today. And it's sooooo good. Wayne, a 16 year-old Dirty Harry with a heart of gold, sets out on a dirtbike from Boston to Florida with his new friend Del to get back the shit-hot 78' Trans-Am that was stolen from his father before he died. An action comedy, it's John Wick via John Hughes. Exactly the stuff I would have loved as a 16 year old and after I watched the first episode I just realised I still do You know; the rebellious teen against the world stuff; typical teenage angst; pessimism, disillusionment and social estrangement. Funny and gritty at the same time. Like The Catcher of the Rye, James Dean, The Outsiders, On the Road and the likes... Good stuff.1 point

Don't think I don't know why you want that particular robot along... Robby’s coolest feature is the ability to synthesize any type of matter with no trouble at all. He’s able to create hyper-advanced spaceship components in a matter of hours, and has no difficulty making a dress for Altaira which is covered in diamonds and emeralds. That’s right, folks: Robby is the king of bling. You know what else he’s the king of? Bootlegging alcohol. When the ship’s stinking drunk of a cook asks Robby to produce some extra whisky for him, Robby replies with: “Would 60 gallons be sufficient?” And you better believe he makes those 60 gallons, even duplicating the bottle and label of the cook’s favorite brand. Cool choice though.. non threatening, unlikely to become unhinged and can create spare parts if needed... vote for nudge as captain revoked! All night drinking sessions and ultra smooth planetary landing do not go hand in hand...1 point

It's R2-D2 then! And as per @Bluewolf's request, we'll also be accompanied by another one... I present you... Robby the Robot!1 point
-
Poor HAL just became trapped in his flawed design...programmed specifically for the Discovery mission with instructions that directly conflicted with this primary programming, he was always destined to fall victim to a Hofstadter-Moebius loop... Poor thing1 point

Can't be me either, I am a Vulcan so I nominate @nudge as captain as she is straightforward and will take no shit from no one.1 point

This crew is shaping up nicely... any hostile Alien encounters and guess who is getting shoved out front.. Curious how you got to be her though??? must have picked ''what difference does it make' on the gender question...1 point

I got same as Bluewolf Don't know the character but agree with most of it especially being loony1 point

I am starting to see you in a Zachary Smith type role... Think we would need to put that one to the vote1 point

FFS just had a quick look in the bathroom mirror to check, I am good old... Mr Spock! You must be the most logical person, maybe the most logical creature in the whole universe. No matter what the conditions are, you always depend on your reason. This makes other people see you as an emotionless being, but we know that you have sentiments deep inside. What would make you happy the most is a journey searching for life on other planets. On a journey like that, you’re the one to deal with all sorts of crises. You’re an inborn scientist.1 point

Draw up the plans then; I'll start designing the Mars colony base in the meantime1 point

Well... Dana Scully! You depend on your rational side, no matter what. You never lose control over yourself or anything around you. You think the truth can only be found by reason. But you’re also more than your intellect, you’re a very good companion. You never let anyone down. Even in the most complex situations on the way to the truth, you first protect your loved ones’ lives. And although you wouldn’t accept it out loud, you love the adventure. It’s impossible to find the truth without you.1 point

So then.. Which Sci-Fi character are you??? Take the quiz https://onedio.co/content/which-sci-fi-character-are-you-11418 Apparently I am Fox Mulder... Needless to say, you’re a loony. You’ve dedicated your whole life to learning. No danger can stand in your way to the truth. Your power source is your obsessive curiosity. However, sometimes you have trouble controlling yourself and you don’t really realize that you're risking your loved ones’ lives. Yet, people keep trusting you and backing you up, as you have a determined personality like a warrior’s. They know that finding the truth and facing it is not a job for the ones who are, well, completely sane...1 point

Yes I know... A few days ago the Chinese announced that the plants will not survive the lunar night. Apparently they decided to not invest more money into it, as initially there were plans to maintain the required temperature in the container and it was supposed to be potatoes and silkworms instead of the cotton plant and fruit flies, but they substituted those in the last minute because they need shorter time to sprout/develop.1 point

Crazy stuff.... I would never sleep at all because I think I heard something rustling in the corner of the room and I would be on edge the whole time, I don't mind them obviously it's just nature and in some respects it would be great to be seeing things like that on a daily or weekly basis but even so I wouldn't want to be doing a 5 point check every time I sat down on the sofa to watch a bit of tv and as for walking around in flip flops.. I think not!! Must be good when you are used to it and know the potential dangers and all that and what to be careful of, can you imagine waking up in the morning to a see gecko staring you in the face smirking...1 point

Never took you for a comic book fan @Bluewolf! I haven't read any of it since my early teens and now am slowly getting back into it. Won't bore you with all the titles in the Star Wars universe that I've read or am currently reading (Darth Vader one is absolutely amazing though ), but there are also a few others that I hold in high regard... Just started reading Saga a while ago. It's a weird sci-fi-fantasy-romance-war-adventure epic that has it all - there is magic, profanity, television-headed robots, intergalactic bounty hunters, nudity, endless warfare, complex villains, empathetic heroes, ghostly baby-sitters and spaceship trees, all beautifully realised in a distinctive digitally painted style. Love it. Another one - Valérian. A classic French sci-fi series first published in the late 60s and was arguably a Star Wars inspiration to a certain degree... It is a true space opera that takes the reader off into the universe of the distant future, where two agents, Valérian and Laureline, travel through time-space in a vessel chartered by Galaxity, the capital of the Earth Empire. Their travels are jam-packed with adventure, humor and fantasy. East of West - a science fiction Western set in a dystopian version of the United States whose fate rests with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Descender- my new favourite. One young robot's struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey that pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera in the aftermath of the collapse of a great and shining human civilization. And then of course there's Heavy Metal... Recently found the whole archive online so slowly working through it... I'm still amazed with the art in it.1 point

Enjoying wasting hours away on Forza Horizon 4 at the moment on Xbox One. It's set mostly in the UK which is interesting and I'm enjoying the online adventure games at the minute although I can see them getting a bit repetitive and they should introduce some new ones. There's some DLC out called Fortune Island but not too fussed about that until the next DLC comes out and I can get a better cost for it.1 point

You know what's worse? If you're using Chrome or any Google enabled service and you opened this link their search algorithm has now ranked feet in the lower echelon search block. This means that sooner or later you're going to get those lovely ad recommendations that you don't want in your browser window. Furthermore, it might even start suggesting it to you as part of search completion. Gotta love the internet.1 point
