New variant originating in Botswana has quickly become the dominant strain there and in parts of South Africa. Suggestion it has advantages in evading the vaccine and immune responses even over the Delta variant. Early days, hopefully just a blip but one to keep an eye on.

Good to see the UK learning from past mistakes and acting ahead of time which they didn't do with India and Delta. Low bar to clear but hey.

Yeah, according to the reports, the spike protein of the new variant is significantly different from the one the current vaccines are based on, so it's potentially the "ah shit, here we go again" situation.

Charlie Wyke has confirmed he hasn't had the vaccine if that's where you're going with this :)

All of those players had the vaccine?

You are free to believe what you like mate :)

Huh? So if someone has the vaccine and collapses (even though there's no link) you think it's because of the vaccine.

And when a player collapses, despite stating he hasn't had the vaccine, you brush it off so passively and ignorantly?

What makes you feel like you can have it both ways and get on a high horse like you have?

What high horse? :4_joy: i didn't say anything but 3 more footballers have collapsed in the last few days and you can believe what you like about thousands of athletes dropping down this last 6mths, the odd one or two will be natural causes like one of the footballers this week. i will just say natural immunity is the best way to fight this new flu virus for the vast majority, studies have shown it to be 27 times better than being vaccinated

Natural immunity to covid is powerful. Policymakers seem afraid to say so.

People making decisions about their health deserve honesty from their leaders.

By Marty Makary

Marty Makary is a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, editor-in-chief of Medpage Today, and author of “The Price We Pay: What Broke American Health Care — and How to Fix It."

It’s okay to have an incorrect scientific hypothesis. But when new data proves it wrong, you have to adapt. Unfortunately, many elected leaders and public health officials have held on far too long to the hypothesis that natural immunity offers unreliable protection against covid-19 — a contention that is being rapidly debunked by science.

More than 15 studies have demonstrated the power of immunity acquired by previously having the virus. A 700,000-person study from Israel two weeks ago found that those who had experienced prior infections were 27 times less likely to get a second symptomatic covid infection than those who were vaccinated. This affirmed a June Cleveland Clinic study of health-care workers (who are often exposed to the virus), in which none who had previously tested positive for the coronavirus got reinfected. The study authors concluded that “individuals who have had SARS-CoV-2 infection are unlikely to benefit from covid-19 vaccination.” And in May, a Washington University study found that even a mild covid infection resulted in long-lasting immunity.

Well we can distract as much as we like but you've made an assumption about those three players, one of them hasn't even had the vaccine so that put's the "must have been the vaccine claim" 1-0 down. At the very least you now need to prove that one of the other two players not only had the vaccine, but collapsed because of it, just to level the score.

That's just 3 this week from thousands. Aguero had the vaccines 1-1:ph34r:  ..did Eriksen have the jabs? :35_thinking:

You are one strange little man :4_joy:  ..i understand you are afraid and part of the herd but common sense has to kick in with you at some point :what:  the vax is not working and natural immunity has been proven to be 27 times better at fighting off covid so if the vaccinated can stay in doors please while we fight it off for you  ..oh, and don't have a power wank because you heart might blow up

The new variant is already found in Hong Kong and Israel. I can smell new lockdowns already.

I thought they caught the Hong Kong case as a returning traveller. Has it gone beyond that?

Seems like we might be having another 'Delta' moment. Big test for the vaccines - hopefully in vaccinated populations we'll see deaths remain relatively low even if cases go wild. Problem is that even in the UK, hospitals have been close to the brink after the vaccine programme while cases have remained between 30k-50k a day. If this new variant pushes that even 50% higher we could have serious problems.

That's not to mention the countries with lower vaccination rates. I dread to think what happens in those countries if this variant is as dangerous as suspected. We were all saying it a year ago, how the rich countries would hoard the vaccines, promise to share them out loudly enough to make people feel alright about it but vaguely enough to get away with not really following through with it. We are a really predictable species at the end of the day aren't we.

Hopefully this is a false alarm.

People can still acquire natural immunity by catching the virus after being vaccinated and it's much safer to catch it having had the vaccine. Not rocket science, mate.

Do you think the vaccines might be causing the mutations as the virus is adapting? :35_thinking: but saying that this is why we cant cure other corona viruses like the flu because it constantly mutates, going to be vaccines after vaccines at this rate. i think we should leave the healthy under 60's to fight it off naturally and only vax the old and sick and get the country back to normal

Yeah, 2 confirmed cases in Hong Kong, both returning travellers - one from South Africa, the other from Canada. Both of them quarantined in the same hotel after returning, and the one who travelled back from South Africa is now considered to be the index case in this potential cluster. Other people who quarantined in 12 rooms on the same floor in the same hotel are now put into precautionary quarantine again.

In Israel, the confirmed case is a returnee from Malawi, and they are currently investigating two others who are suspected to carry the same new variant. All three vaccinated, so there's more fuel for worries about it potentially escaping immune response, but all reportedly asymptomatic (the same with the two in Hong Kong, I believe).

Prove the vaccine had an effect on him then you can have 1-1

The problem we have and anti-vaxxers will use this dishonestly when it occurs is that there isn't a global effort to get rid of the virus, you hear news that there is a new strain in Africa and we will hear news like this for a long time until countries that have been exploited for years who do not now have the money nor resources to fight the virus effectively are supported wholeheartedly by countries who can. There is a fairly good chance (and I believe there is evidence it has already happened in America) that the vaccine will loose it's efficacy against newer, more potent strains and we will most likely return back to a similar situation of needing a lockdown or a new vaccine drive.

Like the flu i don't think you can get rid of a corona virus because it just keeps mutating
