And also an additional note on why vaccines are GOOD and why everyone should get a full dose... 👍

It's worth noting that South Africa has less than 25% of its population vaccinated though, and with only 83 confirmed cases of omicron, it's really too early to make any assumptions; there's literally no data to base any claims on. The manufacturers of the current vaccines are expected to get first lab results in the next 2-3 weeks only.

The confirmed cases in Hong Kong, Israel, and Italy are fully vaccinated, while the Belgian one is unvaccinated.

While it's not significant, its still some data to play with, no?

Not for any significant conclusions... At this point, all you have is less than 100 globally confirmed cases in young, healthy individuals, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, all asymptomatic or with very mild symptoms.

Is it really that big of a deal? Not the variant, I mean your lots reactions to a tiny bit of proactivity

In England, mingers who stopped wearing masks are being asked to put them back on. OMG this is insane. Ahhhhhhhhh. Katie Hopkins save us from this madness

Good use of the  emoji to stop anyone jumping down your throat but you are bang on.

My housemate spent all of yesterday complaining about it being an overreaction and "what's the point in living if we're going to do this every time there's a new strain". In reality he's just annoyed because he was meeting a French girl in London in a few weeks that he probably can't do anymore.

The world hasn't gone mad, if you look at it objectively, it's sensible to take precautions now. We don't know if this new variant is more dangerous but it might be, and it seems more than likely that it transmits easier.

Our problem is that we've all got complacent. The first lockdowns were horrible, we were led to believe by politicians that the vaccine was the quick fix that would end it all and we all wanted to believe it so the scientists and advisors saying hang on, the pandemic isn't over just yet, were largely ignored. We're bored of there being a pandemic and we obviously therefore don't want to believe there might be more sacrifice to come.

It's only a potential setback though. Some people seem to be very upset that the vaccine was a waste of time if it didn't end the pandemic in one fell swoop. Covid has been a beast though and it was never going to be that simple. We're following a two steps forward, one step back model here. The vaccines were two steps forward, a new variant is a step back, the Pfizer pill that prevents the majority of Covid cases ending up in hospitalisations that would have is another two steps forward, etc. All of the vaccine manufacturers have said they can roll out a new vaccine within a few months to respond to Omicron if they need to.

I'd imagine getting too opinionated in any direction at this point is going to be overly emotional and an overreaction. We are still in a pandemic though so as fed up as everyone is of it, we should still act with caution, take precautions where possible and be patient while science and medicine finish winning this war (and they will). It sucks a bit having to miss out on a few more trips away and wear a piece of cloth over your face but it isn't the end of the world.

And there's still a chance this whole Omicron threat fizzles out. It feels unlikely but nobody is calling for mass lockdowns or closed borders yet.

Fuck this shit.

Well if God was looking down now, if indeed there was a God ( which there isn't ) but if there was ( which there isn't ) he might be thinking this whole project is no longer 'fit for purpose' and start over..

Never stopped wearing mine so no change for me.. Just a sensible precaution really, you never know do you, all those people that abandoned them within seconds of being told they didn't have to wear them will be struggling to go back to it because they were probably never really committed to it in the first place..

Israel closing its borders to all foreigners again.

Fuck this shit.

This will be a short term measure. Just a bit of a "breaks on whilst we learn more" which is a symptom of the current time. It won't last. No government could sell "Delta endemicity but covid zero lockdown for Omicron".

They got camps in Australia for the infected and only allowed out your house in a medical emergency 😳 crazy!

Some Australian states gave infected persons the option to quarantine in a hospital, to reduce the chance of infecting their family. Is that what you mean?

I can tell you for a fact the two biggest cities are basically reopen and sending everyone back to the office.

But Australia and New Zealand previously required all international Arrivals to quarantine in a hotel for 2 weeks before letting them out into the country at large.

Glad it's like you say, people died for your freedoms and i hope you keep them   ..was reading some news sites who was saying different?  ..i would like to think your military will protect you if your government did try to enforce such measures

Several news outlets, including Zerohedge.com, are reporting the Australian Defense Force is now physically transferring non vaccinated indigenous people in Northern Australia to a quarantine center located in Howard Springs. Could this be the case? If so, the rounding up of anyone, let alone indigenous Aboriginal Australians seems like a completely unethical if not illegal action for this modern age.

Some media are reporting the move to force residents to quarantine camps comes after "hard lockdowns..

I think in Australia they forcibly rounded up the Aborigines in Northern Australia to place in isolation camps. Some have condemned this.

Last week there were large crowds in at least three big cities over the continued lockdown measures.

For once did not notice the police using CS gas wonder if threats were made as saw in some previous demos some citizens thought the police had lost the plot and made their feelings known.

Yeah, let's hope so. But I worry that all it takes is a single claim that "the current vaccines do not offer sufficient protection against omicron", and most of the world would shut their borders again.

Meanwhile, Japan banned all foreigners from entering too.
