The cynic in me thinks that this “plank was just to deflect from the PPV thing and float something that would be more unpopular than PPV to reject. And now they can say “well PPV isn’t great, but we avoided that Project Power Grab!” But I also know Rick Parry does take half developed ideas too seriously, so there’s that too. I was thinking because he was the one who wanted to put his name over this plan that it seems like most people hate. But yeah you’re right that the people he’s mostly representing were in favour of it. Also I’ve got my own views of him from the time he was a very shit executive with us, so I don’t exactly think he’s the most competent or anything. The people who were so against it outside of the Premier League was fans of EFL clubs, the chairmen were willing to become Turkey’s voting for Christmas for a quick buck. United have been irrelevant since Fergie. Arsenal have been irrelevant since 2004. Chelsea have been relevant since 2003. City have been relevant since 2009 Liverpool have won the league once in 30 years. Spurs haven't won a league since the year lol. They're not as integral to English football as they think. I reckon, from that link, it would be 3x6’s with 5H&A games, meaning the greedy bastards get an extra four group games than they would in the Champions League and then there would be a pot of money for the winner. The Liverpool owners in particular seem to be making some sort of power play. It's anyone's guess what their endgame is but turning the club and the rest of the 'big six' into a worldwide franchise seems like it won't turn out to be far from the mark. I never thought that Big Picture would succeed but maybe it really was just a token gesture so that they could suggest (weakly) that they tried to work with English football and were turned down. If they succeed with what they seem to want to do it would be a bigger travesty for Liverpool fans than anyone else seeing a traditional socialist club abducted by the most capitalist move football has seen in my lifetime, possibly ever. Don't get me wrong though, I'm sure the money men at the rest of the 'big' clubs are licking their lips at the prospect of some of this stuff and delighted that the opportunity could arise without them having to take the PR hit of putting the proposals forward themselves. They were never going to get the "other" clubs to give away both power and money; it was just such an unattractive prospect there had to be more to it. I don't hate this idea for a "super league" that's essentially just an extension of the Champions League rather than a replacement for domestic leagues for the top clubs. It would likely mean they stop competing in the League Cup, which I think would be a massive shame, but it feels like that's been inevitable for some time now. What's not acceptable to me is the implication that it'll be a closed shop. That basically kills any sense of competition and equality between clubs. I know there's a strong argument that hasn't existed in practice for a long time, but it's always been theoretically possible for any team to reach the top without relying on external organisations. That's been a pretty fundamental concept for football in this country and many others in Europe since essentially their inception (with notable exceptions). Can you imagine any of these clubs being happy with the possibility of finishing 18th out of 20 in the European Super League? They won’t like that. They’ll just snatch the power from UEFA and have their own tournament, I think. It’s still immoral and wrong when you’ve got Arsenal finishing in 8th and being in this yet teams winning their national league and not being rewarded with a place in the elite European competition.
