So they came in just to drive the price up

I think we wanted him but wont be held to ransom like last summer with Cucurella

Crazy amount for Declan Rice but who the fuck knows what transfer fees mean anymore. A good addition no doubt and look forward to seeing him (if West Ham accept) but anything above £75m was us overpaying in my opinion.

But didn't you sign Scott Carson on a free? Proving you're obviously willing to spend more than someone is worth

Almost £600m Arteta has spent since he's been appointed, assuming Rice and Timbers go through.

Pressure on.

And teams are expected to compete with that kind of spending xD

Chelsea spent that last season alone. Unfortunately this level of spending is what's needed to compete with the likes of Man City, Chelsea, and Man Utd in the league.

I personally don't like it but it is what it is. The only realistic pressure is to make top 4 again. After that, it's just an even game. (Although the source of Man City's funds and their creative accounting has an asterisk next to their name).

The pressure is that the level Arsenal saw last season, is now the expectation. Even more so with this investment. £200m+ on top of £150m+ last season and £150m+ the season before.

Arguably, the most under pressure manager in the league next season. It's good for Arsenal fans to see a manager back himself to succeed.

Not sure if that is the expectation. I've mostly heard people say they don't expect us to even make top 4.

After last season, you've got to be in contention for the title until the dying end of the season at least. Anyone who thinks you won't make top 4 after last season is a fool, imo. Sure, anything can happen over the course of the season - but right now we've just got to go with things like past performance and the expectation that investment in top players will help.

I don't think Rice is worth £105m, but I also probably underrate him... and even still, I think it's a decent upgrade on Xhaka. So on paper, Arsenal should be imo a bit better than they were last season. Obviously football's not played on paper - but I think it's tough to imagine a scenario where Arsenal aren't top 4 at the end up the upcoming season.

Good signing for them, takes a bit of pressure off Grealish

I'm sure David Moyes once said Rice for £150m if Grealish is £100m !

I do always feel a bit sad for West Ham, or whoever else it is. Even winning a trophy does not prevent these type moves.

But if they are smart they can still improve with 100million plus what ever else they have. we got players like Akanji for 17m, Alvarez 20m, Kovacic 25m etc, some good cheap players about, they could prob get Phillips for 40m too, that's what 100m could of bought them, would you swap rice for them 4?

Akanji

Phillips - Kovacic

Alvarez

I’m genuinely interested to see how this works. Does Rice play as a DM? A box to box? He’s capable of long switches and able to drive the ball forward dribbling, but I rarely see him play direct, line splitting passes. Often for England he gives it to Bellingham who will play that pass instead, West Ham don’t play that type of football.

Whether thats instruction or lack of ability I don’t know, but modern DM’s need to be able to play it around, dictate play and open defences from deep. It’ll be interesting to see how Rice adapts to that if he does play as a DM.

West Ham definitely trying to get one over on Arsenal by announcing his departure before they can put out the announcement with him in the kit. Arsenal fucking around for 11 days after agreeing the deal was a bad look.

Think he's averaged £25m on a player or somewhere around that. He's just bought a lot of different players and basically bought a whole new squad. The cost of the squad is still probably 3rd or 4th in the league.
