Smiley Culture
The odd one or two I’d change but there’s a few missing at the minute through injury, so it probably explains some call-up’s. I’d have had Saka in, though.

Ironic how Maguire is the golden boy but Sterling has an altercation with another player and gets dropped, Maddison goes to a casino (!!!!!) and is dropped. Southgate has no bollocks. Why would dropping Maguire be so difficult? Sterling is a far better and more important player to the team and he was dropped Definitely an inconsistency but don’t see the no bollocks claim (insert joke about one bollock)

There’s no footage of him doing anything (that I’ve seen) other than getting arrested. You could cite the court case I suppose but without Maguire, our best centre back (a sad indictment, I know), you significantly reduce the level of quality there, whereas Maddison is about 6th choice and completely disposable and Sterling had to go home, regardless of his value. I don't disagree Maddison is disposable but for what he did 'wrong', Southgate prompted the hounding he got after and gave him no support at all. Maguire involved in a criminal case yet gets full support? Why did Sterling 'have to go home'?
Lucas
I wonder what Jack Grealish thinks right now. Try as he might, he just can't get in there can he. Could he possibly have been ignored for his misdemeanor during lockdown or does Southgate just not fancy him? Maddison was allegedly “too unwell” but well enough to travel into the city centre to go and play in a casino. Stupid behaviour. I Maguire gets full support because the only footage out there shows absolutely nothing and he’s been found guilty of nothing, as yet. You could use the court case I suppose as an excuse but I dare to think who we’d have in place. Sterling went at Gomez in England camp, didn’t he? After years of cliques and the England side not gelling as it should have done, Southgate stamped down on it and sent him home, rightfully, for me. I wondered if Southgate would put him more central though in the 3 behind as opposed to LW but obviously not. I feel bad for Saka. We've not actually picked a specialist LB, bit of a slap in the face when we have 3 RB's picked. Someone's playing out of position. Danny
I guess we’ll see the below? No left backs is mental Pickford Trent - Gómez - Maguire - Trippier? Rice - Dier Sancho - Mount - Sterling Kane
Lucas
I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if he plays Mings there. Naturally left footed and has played LB for Ipswich and Bournemouth.

Defensively you’d rather Walker.

Subscriber Dan+ Posted August 25, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted August 25, 2020 I just cannot fathom how he's ended up taking Kane, Ings and Abraham yet no left back. Surely you just drop one of those (Abraham for me) and bring in Chilwell, Saka or even Shaw. Just bizarre that we'd choose to not call one up at all yet will definitely play with one. Subscriber Pyfish+ Posted August 25, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted August 25, 2020 I can see why Villa fans are losing it on Twitter at Phillips being in but Grealish not. If it's for breaking lockdown rules then fair play but if it's on footballing merit, Southgate told Grealish he needed to play in the Premier League before getting a call up but yet Phillips is in having not kicked a ball in the top flight as of yet. Don't get me wrong, Phillips had been amazing for Leeds but I feel Grealish perhaps deserves his chance more.

Cicero
Yeah Abraham shouldn't be anywhere near the England team if we are considering form. Scored only 5 goals since January and he doesn't offer anything when he's not scoring. I think the real crime is the only reason Southgate didn't bring Ross Barkley is because he's injured... Don't get me wrong, Phillips had been amazing for Leeds but I feel Grealish perhaps deserves his chance more. But as @Cicero alluded to, Grealish is competing for a wider role of the front 3. Phillips is a defensive midfielder. I did wonder if Grealish would get a chance in the 8 position, bit more central as a playmaker which I mentioned earlier, but Southgate has said he hasn't been playing there for Villa so makes sense why he wouldn't be playing there for England. Competition on the wings are fierce. Phillips has an opportunity in an area where no one has nailed down that role. Several have come and gone but no one have made it their own. It's up for grabs and he has a chance. And it's testament to Phillips that he has been called up because he's performed to a high standard consistently albeit a division below because not many Championship players are. But that shows how well coached he is in his position. Bielsa has transformed him and turned him into a top player, Southgate acknowledges that and hopefully many others will soon.
