There are some keepers that have been performing at the highest of levels for quite some time now like

  • David de Gea (Spain / Manchester United)
  • Jan Oblak (Slovakia / Atlético Madrid)
  • Manuel Neuer (Germany / Bayern Munich)
  • Marc-André ter Stegen (Germany / FC Barcelona
  • Hugo Lloris (France / Tottenham Hotspur)
  • Keylor Navas (Costa Rica / Real Madrid CF)
  • Thibaut Courtois (Belgium / Real Madrid CF)
  • Gianluigi Buffon (Italy / Paris Saint-Germain)
  • Alisson Becker (Brazil / Liverpool)

Even young keepers that are pretenders to the throne like...

  • Gianluigi Donnarumma (Italy / AC Milan)
  • Alban Lafont (France / ACF Fiorentina)
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga (Spain / Chelsea)
  • Oscar Linnér (Sweden / AIK Fotboll)
  • Mile Svilar (Belgium / SL Benfica)

We saw the error made by Joachim Löw in his selection and first team choice for the World Cup after Neuer had suffered a long term injury and was pushed right back into defend Germany's goalposts for their adventure in Russia...  Ter Stegen had been phenomenal not just last season but for at least three years beforehand and always getting better.

Who for you is the best, what's your top three and who do you see being the next best keeper in years to come?

Neuer is indeed class but we always have to leave a margin open for betterment, for natural talent and evolution.  Marc-André ter Stegen covers all of these categories and more.  Anyone that follows Barcelona will know what he has achieved on an individual argument and also taking into account how Barcelona play the game which has always meant that a keeper is more open to being tested.  All this without even going into his football technical ability with the ball at his feet because he is as good if not better than most footballers in Europe's top divisions where passing acumen is in question.

Ter Stegen is the best keeper in the world right now and I wouldn't have Neuer in the top three at all.

As for the young keepers... Kepa is THERE!  Donnarumma has talent and shown it but Kepa has been performing and he's only going to get better with time.  So much so that already in Spain there's a debate as to whether or not he should take the place of David de Gea.

De Gea is still top drawer for me. However he has been a bit poor for the last few months by his standards. I'll openly admit I've not seen enough of the others but Oblak deserves a special mention from those outside the Premier League.

For me right NOW it's between Ter Stegen and Oblak as the best keepers.

I thought @BartraPique1932 Would've been more vocal about this and I'm awaiting our own keeper specialist in the shape of @Fusion to give us his opinion.

I haven't seen Ter Stegen rely on his feet to make saves so he has that over De Gea at least.

Have a look at the highlights from yesterday's game between Barça and Sevilla.  In that game you'll see an example of how he uses every part of his body with incredible first save recovery to keep out point blank situations.

If he makes saves with his feet, he is a fraud.

Ter Stegen surpasses Neuer and probably all other goal keepers in all category but one.

Neuer does probably still have the better timing when he leaves his own box in order intercept, but MATS is better on the line, is able to jump more explosively and got an even better distribution with his feet.

No other La Liga goal keeper has saved as many clear chances as MATS over the course of the last 12 months.

Pickford should be in the poll when he learns to save penalties with his hands instead of his feet.

To be honest I could’ve put Pickford in there before some of those I did  But if I didn’t put Navas in there @Blue would’ve accused me of something untoward.

ter Stegan is well on his way.

People are hating on De Gea recently, but it's been hard when he's got such a shite defence in front of him.

I’d actually say that having a shite defence can flatter a goalie sometimes. There’s more opportunity to look good when your side is under pressure and getting battered for 90 mins.

Goalies are more prone to getting found out when their side is dominant, and they’re going to get judged on whether they deliver in just one or two decisive moments.

De Gea seems to thrive in the first scenario, and struggle in the second.
