Sounds like there was still an agreement between club and player but they couldn't verify it? I don't understand what could have changed so suddenly. Without this new La Liga financing deal, there was no way of fitting him in their wage allowance, and entering into a multi-decade deal with the league would end the Superleague. If the renewal was only a formality, then surely it was on the basis that they would be entering into this deal with the league too. There was no other way it could be done, so where has the obstacle suddenly come from? The restrictions have always been there. In typical Barca style, maybe they thought that the league would suddenly buckle and they could have it both ways.

Not sure how true it is but apparently La Liga set an ultimatum to Barca: - have Messi but fuck the Super League off - Don't have Messi and stick around. Cicero
Quote Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations). As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled. FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life. He is the undisputed greatest player of all time for Barcelona, scoring 672 goals, winning 34 honours and two trebles.....and all he gets is 3 paragraphs from them. 23 minutes ago, Inverted said: Hopefully this is the end for Barca. El Profesor
So, this is a tough decision for Tebas and La Liga. They could adjust their financial rules to make it possible for Barcelona to keep Messi. But that precedent would render those rules completely ineffective. On the other hand, losing Messi is a huge blow for La Liga. It's a lose-lose situation.

Read this as the club piling pressure on La Liga to change their budget restrictions.

ScoRoss
La Liga essentially using Messi as a bargaining chip to get through their sell off. Which Barcelona opposes. But, from reports, seems like it's going through anyway and Barcelona are still losing Messi. Very confusing. From Laporta's press conference, the reported financial state of the club is underestimated to what they have found in their first few months at the club. Subscriber JoshBRFC+ Posted August 6, 2021 Subscriber Share Posted August 6, 2021 This is all because of the previous hierarchy at Barca, same people that made Messi publicly want to leave last year. I don’t blame him if he goes PSG. With his mates… it may mean Di Maria is no longer a starter… unless Mbappe leaves. Which I hope he doesn’t. Can you imagine Neymar Messi and Mbappe. And Messi in that shite league. Fuck me.
Spike
Maybe they shouldn’t have signed a bunch of free transfers for huge salary? Maybe they should have restructured the team to be financially viable?
