There's only murmuring so far of back benchers being unimpressed but none breaking ranks yet.

Poor Grant Schapps is doing Sophy Ridge's show and Andrew Marr tomorrow morning after doing this afternoon's briefing. Talk about your heavy lifting...

The only reason Grant Schapps is being brought out is because he hasn't had a hair cut so looks like he's been following the rules

This does raise government hypocrisy however, all coming out claiming they know how important corona is etc etc yet their initial policy towards it was “don’t worry lads it’s all a laugh drink their spit for all we care” and the closest they’ve come to apologising for that has been the classic and vague “we could have done better” when being shafted by Starmer

Boris still backing Cummings, saying he followed instinct of every parent.

Says we're on course to Step 2 of the recovery roadmap.

Death toll 118 up from yesterday.

School re-openings expected to continue on June 1. Acknowledges some schools can't do this.

June 15th - Year 10 and Year 12 to have 'some contact' in preparation for exams next year.

This is becoming a farce. Journalists/Media being muted on calls so that Boris can stop the lying to them. This is the UK these days xD

Apparently the public have been heckling Cummings, while BBC made an article over fears of the future of lockdown.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52793991

He fucked up but if people are actually going out of their way to abuse him (as with any other person) is bad and shows how messed up our society is really. I also question how many of those would have broken lockdown or not kept social distancing themselves in the process.

Admittedly I haven't read the article yet but people have been ignoring lockdown rules well before Cummings had his moment, including the chief medical advisor in Scotland and Vaughan Gething in Wales (albeit the latter being minor by comparison but still amending the rules afterwards which says a lot).

You need to read the full story before passing comment on this because there is so, so much anger out there over this.

I don't agree with people heckling him outside his house but he brought it upon himself by responding "who cares how it looks" before goading the media on camera about how he managed to steer Brexit past their attempted reporting of facts and evidence.

The Scottish CMO and Nicola Sturgeon admitted it was wrong and she immediately agreed to resign. (I'm not across the full story about the Welsh guy.) If Cummings and Johnson had even attempted to do the same this wouldn't be the story that it is but they are so utterly convinced that they can convince the rest of the country that the rules that apply to everyone shouldn't apply to them because they're special that they couldn't do it even though it would have been better for them politically. That's the extent of their privilege.

It's coming across as a "do as we say, not as we do" type situation and a very arrogant stance especially from Cummings who thinks if he just keeps brushing it off as inconsequential because what other people think does not matter to him then everyone will get bored of asking him questions and the whole sorry saga will go away...

It was equally laughable and insulting that he kept telling the media outside his house to make sure they are social distancing... Personally I don't give a fuck about him getting heckled outside his house because in all honesty any other time people and the media are asking questions they are either being ignored or dismissed out of hand so if that's the only way people can make it clear how they feel about it then so be it... As you say he has brought this on himself with his whole attitude toward it...

The thing that is also being obscured is that ever since the start of lockdown, there have always been two regimes - one for asymptomatic people, and one for symptomatic people.

Asymptomatic people have always been allowed out for work, exercise, and other necessary tasks.

Symptomatic people have always been told to isolate and not leave home under any circumstance.

So there's no point comparing Cummings' behaviour with anyone except with what other symptomatic people did - and almost unfailingly they have isolated as instructed.

There are single parents with multiple kids up and down the country who have shown symptoms and self-isolated and had to hope that they didn't get too sick to look after their kids. Some have even called 111 and checked only to be told they must stay at home under all circumstances. If both Cummings and his wife had gotten that ill then it would have been acceptable for them to ask an uncle or aunt to come and take the kids from the home. Preferably those based in London not Durham. There's at least half a dozen degrees of separation between what they could have tried to do in order to stick to the letter and the spirit of the rules, and what they chose to do.

That's just the first confirmed trip as well. There's evidence which is almost conclusive that he went back to Durham after returning to work and there are even tweets from locals weeks after all of this happened asking why they just saw Dominic Cummings in Durham when he lives and works in London.

Bang to rights.

Local park extremely busy again today, maybe as many as 1000 people. Police walking around looking confused and unsure of themselves. I've received an invite to yet another BBQ, same instigators as the last but this time with people from 7 or 8 different households.

We just have to hope locking down businesses, offices and public transport is enough to suppress the R because at family and friend level the majority seem to have given up on the lockdown.

Seems as though there are a lot of places that have been flooded with people... not many signs of distancing going on in any of the pictures of beaches etc... It's like people have just decided to call it a day on the isolation front...

Just remember, it's all the fault of the politicians and no one else's at all.

This has never been the prevailing thought. There's an entire thread on this forum and a popular hashtag called COVIDIOTS especially reserved for citizens breaking lockdown. Both the government and the individual are culpable.

Cummings is now taking questions after his statement. His defence essentially depends on a household with two parents and one young child with one of the parents showing symptoms constitutes "exceptional circumstances" (his words) when in reality that describes the exact scenario of thousands of households across the country at the exact same time.

There are dumb and selfish people in every country, the point of government in a time of crisis is to guide and control the population anyway. It's not an excuse.

You give out a clear message, set the example from top-down, and then you can keep the number of idiots low enough to be policed. Our situation is the result of mixed messages, no example being set, and police strength being decimated past the point of keeping control.

If everyone was a genius and a paragon of virtue we wouldn't need to have a state in the first place.

In London it takes less than 0.1% of local population to do that for those images and park experiences so it's hard to tell how many have given up. However from my personal unrepresentative sample 95% have broken the 1 person from each household can meet outside rule and all were aware they were breaking the rules.

As with most things involving personal risk judgement, once the rule is broken and no consequences were observed it will be broken again, then again some more, then further and bigger. This is what has happened in the last few weeks and is usually how rule breaking forms. Be it driving over the speed limit or streaming illegal football.

The twist with the virus is what Cummings is saying. The "exercise your own judgement" line. Ultimately that is what all the rule breakers I know believe they've been doing.

Now that line is coming from a government source we are out of most of the lockdown and now argubly in a "common sense" phase, whatever that means.

:congrats:

Five days over on the Isle of Man without a new case of coronavirus. 7 known active cases left on the island. A reminder that every individual case here underwent intense contact tracing and the borders and ports were closed as part of a full lockdown implemented after the first locally transmitted case was confirmed.

Hmmmm… Common sense you say, can't wait for that

I know that both are culpable, but you know that individuals who happily break rules will then blame others if anything happens to them or their family.
