Ridiculous really but I suppose the PL or whoever is in charge of the banning and fining would have been scrutinised if they hadn't have acted.

Ridiculous.   They need to look at context and what the individual meant when they said it.  Cavani was speaking to a close friend, he wasn't trying to insult the person.

I think I said this a while ago to @DeadLinesman - context is important and the context here isn’t racist but we’ve got a rule but probably a fine would be okay.

And then he told me there’s a minimum ban for shit like this, and I think it’s 3 matches.

So that’s harsh... but it’s also fair because that’s the rule.

Is it weird we expect foreign players to know what words might trigger racial sensitivity (although here it looks like NOBODY found it racially insensitive)? Yeah probably.

I understand it though. Maybe clubs need to give players a list of words they can’t say. Although a foreign player might be tempted to memorise all of the banned words?

A good rule of thumb though is if you’re in a different country with a different culture, you probably shouldn’t do things that could be easily misconstrued as highly offensive... even if it’s not offensive to you back home. Because they’re not going to know about your “home” culture and loads of people will think you’re being an offensive arsehole.

If you don’t believe me, go to America and say the word cunt loudly in public

This should have been dealt with within the club really. Every BAME person I've ever spoken to about it has always said they don't care about the words black, coloured, etc. apart from the obvious massive slurs. It's about the context it's used in. They're more offended if you call them a stupid person than if you call them a "negrito" or something because your English isn't great, or even if you use the word "coloured" because you're a 57 year old Brit who gave up keeping track of what the right words are supposed to be.

It's more embarrassing than anything for all parties when a load of time and money is invested into something like this because it's very public while very real issues that fly under the radar like the ongoing lack of representation of BAME managers and officials in the Premier League and EFL just carry on.

My pressure worked it seems...

Deserved, if only because Manchester United fans went to such lengths to say the term was inherently racist when Suarez used it. Hoist by their own petard somewhat.

Well considering Suarez said Negro and not Negrito (it’s well documented) and used it in a specific context to abuse a player (and also when pinching the player), then you’re literally grasping at straws to suggest it was the same. But yeah, Salford media Tories and all that bollocks.

It's nothing like the Demba Ba - PSG incident, that was cultural mistranslation but aimed in a negative way so it could have been misinterpreted and is deemed racist for me, as Webo felt he was racially abused.

Cavani was talking to his friend, which in South America we use negrito all the time. In fact, a black person enjoys being called that over here. Makes me think the FA wants to make a political statement.

Negro is also used as diminutive term in Spain. I’m not the one arguing that Suarez wasn’t a racist he was and deserved is punishment. It’s you and your pond life fanbase who have now done a 360 on the issue, claiming ‘cultural differences’. It’s always different when it’s your lot isn’t it.

Did Suarez do it to abuse him or to get his attention? Even Antonella, Messi's wife, refers to herself as Negra.

Don’t say that, this is Manchester United. They are special and different don’t you know.

Again, you’re completely missing the point because of this deluded hatred of anything Manchester based. Suarez was blatantly racist, Cavani was not. Didn’t even use the same fucking word. Whatever floats your boat though.

That doesn't make it OK though. If you're being negative then Evra had a right to feel racially abused. Cavani was saying it in a friendly way. The same happened with Pierre Webo and that referee the other day.

Can someone shed some light on the Suarez/Evra incident and the entire dialogue? Context is key, particularly in the Uruguay/Argentina region as they openly refer to themselves as Negro/Negra if they are in any way dark. Even tan toned.

I agree Suarez, should have been banned. So should Cavani, the whole upshot of the Suarez case was that cultural differences was in no way a defence. Suarez was worse that’s why he got a longer ban.

I’ll need to find the rest, but not tonight.

Cavani shouldn't have been banned. Not even fined. He wasn't even speaking English or to a friend who might not even know English. The FA are making a political statement with this. Argentina doesn't have many black people so it's hard to say what the context is there. Uruguay does though, and they don't mind it. In my case, I know in Peru who have a ton of black people that they love being called that if it's in a friendly non derogatory way. I have a few friends like that, and the general consensus with most people is that they like it.

Oh, and for the record, Cavani deserves the ban somewhat, even if he didn’t know the connotations. But still, It’s eXaCtLy tHe SaMe aS SuArEz.

Nobody had said it’s ‘exactly the same’ have they.

I’m just enjoying the vermin that follow Manchester United trying to row back on what they were saying 10 years ago.

They have a history of it, Ian Wright, Paul Parker etc. But according the British press they are a club and fanbase who do nothing wrong. Manchester United consistently have the most arrests for racist abuse too. But yeah, we should all look up to them.
