Cicero
There's something romantic about it. I agree with it to a certain extent.
DeadLinesman
Never retire a number. Ever.
Subscriber Dan+ Posted February 23, 2018 Subscriber Share Posted February 23, 2018 I'm not sure about doing that to be honest. It gives off the message that you've already hit your peak and there's no topping it. And clubs who retire the number 12 for the fans deserve to go bust. ScoRoss
I personally wouldn't retire any number. Look at the history behind numbers like the No.7 at Man United, the legacy of all the players that have wore it before. That is a bigger inspiration and legacy than simply retiring it. Panna King
Ajax retired the number 14 for Johan Cruyff, But Cruyff didnt want it retired but to be given to a player he fully deserved to wear it as an honour. The last player to wear 14 for Ajax was Roger a Spanish player in 2006.
Subscriber Dan+ Posted February 23, 2018 Subscriber Share Posted February 23, 2018 Spurs should definitely give Harry Winks the number 40.
ScoRoss
I think there are certain exceptions like Man City retiring Marc Viven Foe's number. But other than that, it seems a bit small time.
Cicero
City should retire Adam Johnson's number. There's no come back after that.

True Blue
Don't mind it, no one took 25 after Zola at Chelsea but it was never confirmed that it was retired.

Smiley Culture
Players who wear stupid numbers should be immediately retired. Wilfred Bony wearing number 2? Sorry Wilf, that’s for right-backs, only.
Cicero
Surprised Bony is who you thought of. William Gallas taking the number 10 always springs first to mind.
Marc
I don’t agree with retiring numbers in any circumstance. I’m also not comfortable with all these minutes applause etc that’s creeping into football. I’m sure Newcastle were doing one for about 3 different things at one point. We did a minutes applause last week for a supporter that died(she was bit of a super fan that had been every game for about 10 seasons) but I don’t agree with it, I just don’t know when these start and stop. When is a supporter that dies worthy of a minutes applause? Just don’t do it. Leave it out of football and just play football. Fed up of the guff that surrounds the game now. Administrator Stan Posted February 23, 2018 Administrator Share Posted February 23, 2018 @Smiley Culture won't like this from Sampdoria's keeper... Didn't Baros wear 5 at Liverpool? And Glen Johnson number 8 at Stoke?!

UNORTHODOX
I don't think Liverpool retired Gerrard's number 8 shirt but no one has taken that number since he left, I think Keita should get the number 8 shirt next season though.

Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted February 24, 2018 Subscriber Share Posted February 24, 2018 Don't see the need to retire numbers. I can understand if a player died or something you would make a point of leaving that number free but for a season rather than forever.
