TAA
Trippier
Walker
Chilwell
Shaw
James
Saka

7 players who could play as FB/WBs.

That's a lot.

I'd have thought Saka could have been traded for a midfielder.

That's very light in midfield, isn't it. Especially if there are any doubts over Henderson's fitness.

2 cm positions, 5 players. Wouldnt call that light

Saka is a midfielder who can play wing back

Bellingham is 17, Henderson is returning from injury, Rice and Phillips have never been to a tournament before, and is Mount going to play as a part of a midfield two? Genuine question, I thought he usually played as the most advanced of three. It might not be light in terms of out and out numbers but I wouldn't call it convincing either.

He's not going to play midfield ahead of Grealish, Sancho or Sterling though is he?

And he's not even going to play at LB/LWB unless Chilwell or Shaw both get injured.

Hence swapping out Saka for someone like Ward-Prowse or even Lingard would be my option. Especially given that Henderson is only just coming back to fitness as well...

Mount will probably be playing at RW or LW in a 343 which would be the incorrect move as Sancho, Foden, and Grealish would be more effective.

Mount tried playing in a pivot for us and wasn't that great.

Saka is a left footed winger/forward, we don’t have many of those.

I don’t see the point in Ward-Prowse when we already have Rice, Phillips, Mount, Henderson and Bellingham. You don’t get anything from that, you do get a left footed forward in Saka who can also play the left hand side.

Lingard I get is more of a mixed view

Saka has impressed when playing for England. More so than some starters in his position. Sterling and Sancho are obviously ahead of him but they haven't been great for England in the past year. Having a bigger reputation doesn't mean much at international level if you don't show up.

As for the RB position, it's difficult to cut someone as all have legitimate claims to start at RB let alone just make the squad. Walker the most experienced, Trent the best going forward, Trippier had the best season overall, and Reece James is in the best form while also being the most balanced RB. Taking all 4 is weak from Southgate though. He needed to cut at least one.

Wouldn't say there are many surprises other than taking 4 RBs. Even though it's a 26 man squad, it'll be no different than usual as far as how many players actually see significant time.

Southgate's going to rely heavy on Henderson and return him back to us injured, the dumb cunt.

I think Klopp as well needs to use him sparingly. His injury will more than likely cause him reoccurring pain given the nature of it.

Nearly as many RB’s as actual midfielders put together. Southgate is an absolutely idiot. Why is he shoehorning Trippier in the fucking squad? And you have Saka who can play there as well. Laughable.

Henderson is definitely going to prematurely play every single minute and it’ll fuck us.

Reece James getting the Mount treatment I see.

Reece James will likely start because he is the most balanced right back of the lot and probably the adequate choice in Southgate's system. There isn't that much call for controversy considering James is great on the ball and great defensively.

Yea, I’m surprised by the lack of knowledge people have on Reece James, he did just light up a Champions League final for you lot too, probably man of the match after Kante. In a year or two Kyle Walker will be back at Bramall Lane, Trippier shouldn’t be on the plane and TAA doesn’t fit ‘Southgates system’.

Guess Trent might play centre mid?

Southgate said he knows he used to play there when he was much younger but wants him to play in his proper position first before anywhere else.

Southgate's managerial ability will definitely be tested. So many players at his disposal that can be utilised based on the opposition.

He's not really looked good there playing there as a senior player (albeit, I only really remember one match where he played CM). I know international football is a bit shit - but I think it would be a really really poor decision to play him there.

England should use Trent at what he's world class at, going forward and creating from the right flank. The England manager's job should be coming up with a system that gets the most out the players who are world class or at least very close to world class rather than coming up with a system and then picking players that he hopes will fall into that system, like an idiot kid playing FM that's downloaded "an unbeatable tactic."

But I think if his plan is "I'll play Trent at centre mid, because his range of passing is very good" we're in for a really shit tournament as far as England is concerned.

Have to say I don't remember TAA playing in CM since he made his debut

I remember one match he played there alongside Gini Wijnaldum. Some league cup match or some shite - he was rubbish there tbh.

Doesn't really matter anymore though, seeing as how Trent's been injured and they had him aimlessly walking around the pitch for a while, probably exacerbating whatever the injury was because the FA doesn't do competence.
