Best Temporary Rivalries

Its got to be Arsenal and one of the games that stick out for me was the 'Rumble in the Tunnel', Vieira v Keane and 4-2 United, twice Arsenal went ahead but United came back and Ronaldo scoring and running past the Arsenal supporters with his finger on his lips saying "Shhhhhh..." and Rooney with his face at the back of the net screaming at Arsenal supporters after United scored, Fergie v Wenger was always one to watch when them 2 managers faced each other.

I guess Newcastle and Man Utd had a rivalry on the pitch for a few years in the early/mid 90s. There was the famous Keegan outburst just before I started getting in to football and realising what the PL was all about. An iconic PL moment though and emphasised how caught up anyone could get in their own emotions because of how much was at stake.

I'm not sure if it classes as a rivalry but there was a time where Newcastle and Liverpool wouldn't regularly play out goalfests of games. Thrilling finishes and sharing 7 goals with last minute winners etc...

Oh who could forget Newcastle v Manchester United in the 90s? You can't have a complete meltdown and not be on here!

Chelsea, Barcelona and PSG have this ridiculous trio where it feels like there's at least one CL draw between two of the three every season.

Temporary... one that springs to mind for me is Leicester v Tottenham. Just simply a case of circumstance.

Liverpool v Man City is the obvious one nowadays. They've gone from enemy of an enemy is my friend to pretty much hating each other.

Real Madrid and Barcelona, once Messi leaves too it won't be much Classico anymore

The Classico in 2011 was always memorable. Especially that time where they met 4 times in the space of a month. One in the league, Copa Del Rey final and then the Champions league semi final.

It did lose some of its prestige the moment Cristiano left though. Will probably have the lowest amount of viewers once Messi leaves until both Real and Barca become powerhouses again.

I liked the Watford v Everton one...

... idk if @RandoEFC remembers it or not but... I thought it was hilarious.

Even Liverpool fans on the sidelines were thinking "what the fuck is up with these Watford fans?" xD

got any vids of the watford fans? was it because of richarlison or something?

I think because of Silva and Richarlison? I’m not sure though tbh. I’m sure there’s videos on twitter, but I’m not sure I can stomach searching through a couple years of blueshite Twitter though

Yeah they were convinced we had a rivalry for a while and thought they were a bigger club than us when they reached the FA Cup final. Heard a lot about how much better their next manager after Silva was than him. Now I can't remember the last tweet I saw from a Watford fan or that manager's name xD.

Chelsea Liverpool for me.

'03 - When you think back to that last game of the season where they both played in to see who got the 4th Champions League spot, it's just grown from that.

I mean, to consistently meet in the Champions League year upon year was what really defined the rivalry.

Mourinho v Benitez, a battle of two master tacticians that didn't like eachother.

'05 Semi Final 2nd leg and the Luis Garcia 'ghost goal', Jose losing his shit

'06 Drawn in the same group. Two bore draws xD

'07 Semi Final, Liverpool winning on pens, some say they have Chelsea's number in this Comp.

'08 Quarter Final, Chelsea finally gain revenge in extra time, Lampard cries.

'09 Quarter Final, and that amazing 4-4 2nd leg that swung one way and the other with Chelsea coming out on top.

All this was just the Champions League.

Then there's been the FA Cup final, League Cup final in Cardiff, numerous Premier League games, Gerrard's slip, Demba Ba, Chelsea signing Torres, Benitez v Jose, Suarez biting Ivanovic etc

You get the drift.
