He’s not wrong about the transfer ban being why those kids got a chance, tbf.

Chelsea have long had one of the best academies in the country. But managers seldom take the risk to move players to the first team - they typically have to get their shot out on loan because expensive first team players coming in to perform now is important to managers that don’t last too long at Chelsea.

Lampard was brought in and used a lot of these young players because there was a transfer ban. I think in normal situations you wouldn’t have hired Lampard and you’d have given an established pro a lot of money to spend.

The transfer ban and our utilization of youth was only an example and not the main premise of my argument.

I think it’s fair to treat Arsenal and Chelsea as wholly different clubs, even though Arsenal have had years of heavy spending - which hasn’t always paid off. Arsenal operate more like a normal football club tbh, even if they’re owned by a billionaire.

Chelsea don’t really operate in the same way and that’s why up until that transfer ban they were privileged enough to just use their top tier academy as a way of funding expensive signings and calling that “self-sustainable”

This is where I will always disagree because this entire argument is both a special pleading fallacy and a form of tu quoque. You're allowing certain standards to only apply to something that fits your ethical perspective/compass. It's completely unsound.

Managers know they will have  money to spend at Chelsea though if needed. Even when they don't spend much they will always be able to get good managers.

Just need Cannabis, Teso, Marc, and Brian to return to bring back the glorious 2018 vibe.

I don't think Cannabis will come back.

It’s not an ethical thing? It’s how Chelsea operate that makes them difficult to compare with other clubs.

Not even City and PSG operate the same way. But those are the clubs I’d compare with you. Maybe Newcastle in a few years.

It isn't difficult to compare at all when the premise is so simple.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have invested poorly over the years after spending loads of money. Both different situations but the principle is still the same.  It's the same argument when we compared Liverpool and City's spending proving you need to spend to compete. Doesn't matter where the money came from, both the clubs spent it to win.

Not sure on a few things that have been said in this thread today from what I've read but I will say this.

I've been very critical of Arsenal for a while on here but I find it hard to be negative about them today when they put in the performance they did.

Ultimately they have nothing to show for it again against a Top 3 club and the big club mentality in them shouldn't be content with just the performance, but I was impressed with what I saw. General play was very good. They had City pinned in their half at times during that game but they couldn't capitalise when on top. I still thought Arsenal looked dangerous with 10 men.

The only thing I would say is, there were chances in that game a top level striker would bury and that's got to be the focus for next season now Auba looks like he has no future there.

City got out of jail but that's what Champions do, find a way to win when they aren't at their best. Chelsea have spunked wins that way this season and I'm sure Liverpool have/will too.

I briefly remember his name

I had forgotten all about him to be honest. That's how unremarkable he was. Truly dull and unmemorable. Probably bores his girlfriend to death nowadays, or whoever is putting up with him now.

Any way you look at it this is just another nail in the title coffin, If we manage to battle out a draw with Liverpool tomorrow then I fear it's game over already for this season for both of us...

Even a win for either team and it's over with the decisions that Man City get

Well if you win with your game in hand you are at least better placed to try and close the gap a bit, Not sure we will have enough about us given all the current shenanigans at the club to get the win but you never know, we can't be giving up half way through the season... Strange though that City don't seem to be suffering from any issues, no Covid, no significant injuries etc to hamper them that I am aware of... They are certainly best placed to win it again even at this stage.. Shame, It was looking like it would be a good battle a while back but that all turned to shit pretty quickly..
