It depends on circumstances (e.g. climate, type of housing, the breed of the dog, etc.), but in general, dogs are pack animals who need to socialise, bond and interact with other members of the pack, so surely if you spend most of the time indoors yourself, that's also where your dog should be? Now if you have a house with a backyard or something along those lines, and spend time both inside and outside, then giving your dog the freedom to go back and forth seems to be ideal...

I'm no expert nor a dog keeper but just curious. Some argue that any dog can be kept outside even if winter. Long as you have the right kennel and insulation etc. But you apparently have to train them at an early age.

I mean, most of the dog breeds can definitely adapt to it, especially if provided with adequate shelter, but the question is, why would you want to do it for a pet dog? It's different with working dogs; people in the countryside keep them for protection of their property and livestock from wild animals and potential human intruders, so they have to be kept outside for that reason, but I don't know why anyone would like to do it to a companion dog...

What is your view on dogs being kept indoors or outdoors? I'm not an expert but people have debated this. Most keep their dogs indoors all the time, only taking them out for walks, relieve themselves and to play/exercise. Obviously some dogs can't stay out as they don't do well in the heat or their fur is too short for the cold.

What's your view?

Depends on the dog... I have had 3 German Shepherds in my lifetime and all of them were outdoor dogs and by that I mean we didn't keep them outside just that they enjoyed the run of the garden so we built a big kennel round the side of the house and they spent most of their time in there.. They would come and go in and out of the house in the summer when the doors are mostly open but if they had something like a football kicked over from next doors they would run off with it to the kennel and would be buggers to get in, even at night.. xD

Mooms our Staffie is an indoor dog mostly but in the summer she loves to go to the back of the garden and sit in the sun getting a tan.. if you leave one of the garden deckchairs out there she will lounge on it until she gets too hot then goes and has a lay in the shade until she cools off.. I don't think there is anything wrong with having an outdoor dog if it's a guard dog on a property/site for example but as @nudge said they are pack animals and will always prefer to be around people if it's a family pet..

That's right they can.. but remember if they are going to be mostly in isolation away from others then they may tend to become territorial seeing the area they are kept in as being theirs to defend against intruders which is not a good recipe if you have kids around...

That's what annoys me every time when I hear yet another story of some dog attacking and biting someone "unexpectedly" and "without reason", only to find out that the said dog was pretty much neglected, kept outside in a kennel or even worse, chained, and mostly isolated, with lack of interaction and proper training; especially when it's one of the strong-willed, high-maintenance, boundless energy breeds that are known for needing a lot of daily exercise, socialisation and general attention.

He (I think it's a male parakeet? Or is it is a she?) is lovely, Chris. Have you taught him any swear words yet? :D

Yeah, a male as females don't have a ring around their neck. Well they do, but very slightly. It's weird, as make birds always look "prettier" than females when it comes to most species. The complete opposite to humans in this regard xD

He has pretty much taken over the front room!

I've noticed he makes noises similar to those of car alarms or a delivery van reversing, but no sweat words yet.

Difficult to tame though..I've always found birds to be easy to tame, but not this little bastard 😂, although it's happy and very healthy. There are plenty perches around the room and toys to chew fuck out of. Also eats very well with a variety of nuts, seeds, fruit and greens everyday.

Poor Rainbow, the white second oldest rat over 2 years old and the daughter thinks she has not got long to go, very slow and can't climb as good.

Just got from our daughters on a mothers day visit, so there were me and the two grandsons with the wife, daughter and 6 lady pet rats, had a lovely visit.

My favourite is Charamanda, who always comes up to me, nestles into my jumper for a wee snooze then comes out and gives me a wee kiss all over, bliss.

Lovely them John.

To think once upon a time the wife was petrified of anything like rats or mice but the daughter showed her how lovely pet rats are, they are loyal and once they get to know you and they sense that you won't hurt them they come straight up to you like a pet cat or dog and let you stroke them, the wife calls them all her "Wee baby girls".

The daughter's pet female Gecko, let her out of her glass enclosure for a wee wander while the daughter and son built a new enclosure for her, lovely wee type lizard and very shy and only comes out really in the late afternoon or at night, at the moment Buddy is shedding her skin for a new colour.
