Wayne Rooney: Derby County in talks to make former England captain player-coach

Wayne Rooney has flown to London for talks with Derby County over becoming a player-coach at the Championship club.

The 33-year-old ex-England captain has more than two seasons left on his deal with DC United in the United States.

However, Rams owner Mel Morris feels Rooney could provide the impetus required to get the club back into the Premier League.

Rooney has made no secret of his desire to go into coaching and Derby feel that could also be a factor.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney will join Championship club Derby County as a player-coach in January from MLS side DC United.

The 33-year-old forward, who is Manchester United and England's all-time record goalscorer, will join the Rams on an initial 18-month contract.

He signed for Washington-based DC from Everton in July 2018 and has scored 23 goals in 41 league games.

"I'm sure I can make a big contribution," said Rooney.

Rooney has agreed to join Derby despite having more than two seasons left on his deal with DC United.......

Amazing how Derby can afford this deal.

Oh, hang on, wait a minute...they sold their stadium to their owner at double the price to escape FFP.

Ah, makes sense. Brilliant work yet again by the EFL.

Rooney joins as coach. Is Derby now the coach/managerial primary school?

Besides Lampard and now Rooney, who else has started with Derby?

The greatest English coach in history and one of the most undervalued (not the only one)  if we discount his passage through unknown club Hartlepools United.

They also tried to get gerrard. Is it just PR? Lampard did a bang average job and got his dream job so I'll expect Rooney will have seen that and gone for it.

Maybe it is PR and it has certainly worked. It's nice to attach the club to names like Gerrard, Lampard, and Rooney. The latter is in a different spot anyway, player/coach and not a managerial position. I can't see Rooney being a manager, though time will tell.

It's got to be a PR job because there's no other reason for appointing an unkown entity in terms of coaching. Obviously Derby County don't take themselves seriously.

Does Rooney even have his badges?

Maybe he's gone to Derby to get some. Or get some more if he's done any while he's been in America.

You can't be a head coach without all your badges, at least not everywhere else in Europe. Don't know for sure what the situation regarding this is in the UK but what I do know 100% is that he can't coach in a European game without all of them. Not that he need worry about that part at Derby County.

Remember Zidane was banned from the touchline at Real Madrid 'B' until he acquired his badges... Real Madrid 'B' were in Spain's second division at the time.

He has said he is going as a player first and foremost. Thats a very good player Derby will have for the final push.

Exactly. So that's why he may have come to Derby to get some badges. He can do it while he's playing as several players do when they are towards the end of their careers.

I was unaware you could be a player/coach without badges.

I think he'll do well, as a player (he's never done any coaching, so who knows how he'll do at that) at a championship club looking to push on from what they were last season. He's got a lot of top level experience his teammates won't have had, so that's a good mentality to have in the dressing room, and he's never been one to not put a shift in imo.

When you think of how good Rooney was, it's mental that he's playing at Championship level at 33.

You gotta think though, since he debuted at the age of 16 his body has a few more years on the odometre than most players. 17 years as a professional football is a long time.

People forgetting they had Ashley Cole last year as well.

Anyone would think their chairman has stuck a contract promise of one marquee signing or sign a top player per season for the manager:ph34r:

Is it true that he's going to be on £100k a week, paid for by 32Red on the basis he wears number 32?

Astounding and it's a worrying loophole.

Wayne Rooney: Ex-England captain's Derby shirt number 'adds to moral issue'

A betting firm's involvement in Wayne Rooney's move to Derby County adds to the "ethical issue" football has with gambling, says football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley.

The Rams have said that "on the back of" the former England captain joining, they have secured "a record-breaking sponsorship" deal with their shirt sponsor, online casino 32Red.

The 33-year-old, who is set to join the Rams in January, will also wear squad number 32 on the back of his shirt.

"There is a big moral issue with gambling at the minute," said Plumley.

"This is no coincidence. And it is right to be pointed out."............
