Yeah, I can understand the reasoning behind not wanting to implement drastic measures (especially from the economic impact point of view) but it's the claim that large events don't make much difference that baffles me, especially since social distancing has been touted as one of the ways to reduce transmission (and especially super-spreader events) by pretty much everyone else.2 points

A good thread on why it´s so tough for governments to decide when to pull the trigger on more severe measures. Even at the peak of the cases in Wuhan, only 1% to 5% of its population was exposed to coronavirus. The rest of the population still isn´t immune to it. Some governments may delay adopting a Wuhan or Italy-like quarantine so that more people are exposed to the virus and acquire immunity. It´s a risk strategy, obviously. But you can´t quarantine a region or a country indefinitely, so picking the best time to do it is very important. I remember @Dr. Gonzo mentioning about a 2nd wave and this seem to be danger of not giving enough time for a "collective immunity" to be acquired. It was the 2nd wave that was the most lethal in 1918-19. It´s a shit sandwich, no easy decisions.2 points

Tbh, my knowledge of politics is very minimal in general, but it's the sheer hypocrisy that does my head in with them. Happy to criticise others yet do similar themselves. I've sent @DeadLinesman to America with a few petrol cans and a lighter. Have a nice day.2 points

The war is still going on and there are usually several deaths a week because of it, but the war is only confined to a relatively small region(the Donbass region) in the east of the country. The rest of the country is safe, with no conflict.1 point

As a brazilian journalist said earlier today, the coronavirus test result might be the first positive thing to happen in more than one year of Bolsonaro administration.1 point

Without trying to turn this into a political argument, the Welsh (Labour) Government have a habit of this sort of thing just to be 'unique', 'the first' or simply be 'different' to the UK Government, even when it makes no sense whatsoever. I've been tempted to make a thread around the Welsh Government but that's for another time.1 point

First Corona virus death here in the country. A 76 year old man. The current series against South Africa will be played behind closed doors. IPL might be postponed. I don't know if this was posted here. But this a wonderful interview of an expert. Osterholm puts out some great (and scary) facts in a calm manner.1 point

To be honest I only say that logically - kids touch everything on their own bodies or several different surfaces, pick their noses, touch their faces with no care in the world. Unless they're of an older age or with an adult, you're unlikely to see them washing their hands rigorously or as consciously as adults would hopefully have now been doing for the past few weeks as per advice.1 point

Eating ashes has probably made your immune system stronger. On a serious note, take care. Yeah, when I saw that news on the TV it almost felt as if someone from my family has fallen ill. I hope he gets well soon.1 point

It's ridiculous that they've let 3000 people from a city that's on part lockdown over though isn't it? How many people is this going to affect in the UK now? You'll have loads travelling back to different parts of the UK tonight1 point

A friend of mine got back from italy like 2 weeks ago, and I've been in contact with him about 3 times since and he is currently in hospital sick as a dog being tested. I wash my hands after peeing, and generally before eating or after training. I work in a bottleshop handling money for hundreds of people, I go to a commercial gym and a university. If I'm packing heat I genuinely think I will have infected hundreds of people directly.0 points
