Quite an emotional moment here right now in Spain. Everyone just came to their balconies at 10pm with a minute of clapping to pay tribute to the health system and all the people working to help fight this disease. Quite a striking moment.4 points

Alright for some, I still have to trudge in to work everyday.... Sometimes being a hero is not all it's cracked up to be.... sometimes I just want to be the wimpy hypochondriac who phones in sick because I had to blow my nose twice in the same day.... On the other suggestions sounds good... was thinking of starting up a film quote quiz3 points

Looks like the virus situation is getting worse, the WHO criticized the UK government's reaction and now footballers have gotten the virus in the UK. Exceeded over 1000 cases. I just wanted to wish you all your safety. I may have never met any of you, and maybe never will but I still care and hope you stay clear of the issue just as I would all my friends and family. Stay at home, wash your hands and don't panic. Stay clear of others and keep them safe just as you should save yourselves. Best regards. Everything will be alright.3 points

Seriously, I don't get why you even consider still going there, especially considering your age. No offense, but I really don't understand that.3 points

Here in the UK that'd be met with a complaint to the local council for noise nuisance2 points

As Tommy said. I wouldn't do it at my age either. It would be completely different if you could do it on your own responsibility but you also endanger other people and so i think that's a pretty bad attitude towards the whole thing. I don't mean that in a bad way, but i still cannot understand it. Of course you don't want to give up your travels but you are not alone with that either.2 points

Thanks to Karen Porter, she pretty much impressively forced the CFC to make testing free from now on, even to those without insurance, because it was declared as a public health emergency...1 point

Just a small correction - it's not different strains but rather different viruses belonging to the same family.1 point

That's around the time BBC tweeted something as well that a new strain of Coronavirus is not infectious enough to pose a global threat. But then the thing is there are always different strains of Coronavirus floating around. This current one just seems much stronger.1 point

This time last week, I had just been to see loads of sights, to the beach and was at Camp Nou watching the game, everything was normal, even though an outbreak happening was inevitable. Just a week later and the whole city is shut, with only pharmacies and supermarkets open, all sport suspended and signs up everywhere advising people to stay at home unless it's essential. It's only going to be the same here though very soon mind. We are simply just a bit behind Spain, that's all and it'll be total lockdown for us soon unfortunately.1 point

Those who do this are just thick cunts anyway. First world problems and all that. And cheers as well @Inti Brian. Wales hasn't been too badly hit as of yet, though has had a sharp increase in the last day or so.1 point

Thanks. I hope/think we'll be okay. I think it goes beyond just UK members on here though, not just because WHO criticised UK government's reaction.1 point

That does sound very interesting to me I understand Python has some useful packages for AI/ML. I really want to get some handle on what these topics are about, it all seems very intriguing, but for now classical scientific computing is more than enough to handle. If you ever need a quick intro to the basics (for instance I think the good old optimization methods are abundant also in machine learning) these videos are recommended: https://podcasts.ox.ac.uk/series/scientific-computing-dphil-students1 point

See this is how panic starts... We are low on milk and now I am worried there won't be any over the shop this morning when I go and if there is I am buying at least 40 pints to be safe... If I find any Bourbon biscuits I will get them and sell them to you for £5.50 a pack mate then I can get my medal for pretending to be community minded...1 point
-
What's frustrating about all this panic buying is you are forced to pick up a little extra yourself just to make sure you have the bare essentials in the house while someone else sits on 20 packs of toilet rolls they will never need... Shame on the Retailers as well for cashing in and not controlling it, Only when the Government start taking measures do they then try and come across as being responsible...1 point

I have got a bit of a sore throat, so I think I try to avoid people as much as possible. I often have that in the winter, but I guess one must be on the safe side. The plan was to visit my parents for Easter, but my father does not have much of an immune system due to chemotherapy, and is not a young man either, so I am very unsure what I should do there. I hope my doctor will have some conclusive advice. There is no excuse for not cleaning the apartment, and the chance of getting a lot of reading done should be good. Are you studying something interesting?1 point

This has affected the North of Italy more than the South, which is more similar to Greece and Cyprus. Also South America's cases are now rising, Brazil has now reached the 100s and once that happens, the amount of cases seem to grow and grow in no time. Spain, for example, has gone from just 3 cases to over 5,000 within weeks. South American countries are simply just a few weeks behind and will be hit as hard as anyone unfortunately. Likewise, England and Netherlands are simply just a week or 2 behind Spain, who are a week or 2 behind Italy. There seems to be a pattern and this is going to keep spreading. Hopefully it doesn't hit Africa too badly either as they have enough to deal with already. Same with countries like Venezuela as Ricardo has mentioned.1 point

Nationwide quarantine is expected to be announced here sometime next week (reportedly once the first local transmission is confirmed) so I still have to buy more beer tomorrow just in case. Other than that, nothing has changed for me personally, really. I spend most of time at home working and studying anyway and don't get in contact with many people as I was supposed to stay here just temporarily (well it will definitely be longer than I expected now though). My favourite pub has closed yesterday as a precaution anyway so there's no temptation there either haha. I normally used to eat out almost every day but I reduced it to a minimum now and just cook at home or get food delivered/takeaway. Do grocery shopping twice a week or so; just like always. Other than that, just washing hands often but I've always been doing that anyway as I wear contacts so it's kind of routine... Doing pretty well otherwise. My workload has been pretty heavy lately and I also spend additional 15-20 hours on the course I'm currently doing online as well. Got some clarity in personal relationships too. Missing racing though.1 point

Things are starting to go down in Holland, with restrictions on events of more than 100 people, urging people to work from home when they can, and to avoid contact with the elderly and other vulnerable groups. Curiously, unlike France and Belgium they haven't yet closed the schools as they fear it would put too much pressure on parents who cannot work from home, against too little benefit as children seem largely unaffected by it. The latter seems a bit odd to me as children themselves may not be affected much, but from what I understand they can still easily spread the disease to more vulnerable groups. In any case, I expect them to carry it over the weekend and close the schools by Monday. On another note, I have a friend who lives in Beijing and he says things are relatively good there now. The virus seems to be on the retreat again, and he said he made it through the lockdown just fine. He also said all the reports in Western media about 'China imprisoning its own population' made him laugh, as you can easily still move about the city. There are guards around, but they mainly just sleep by open gates and you only wake them up when you need his help because you lost your keys.1 point

The latest from Spain... The draft version of the decree implementing the state of alarm, which radio network Cadena SER first reported on and to which EL PAÍS has had access, limits journeys to the following: 1. The acquisition of foods, pharmaceuticals and essential items. 2. Access to healthcare centers. 3. Journeys to workplaces or to carry out labor, professional or company duties 4. Return journeys to habitual residences. 5. Assistance for and care of seniors, minors, dependants, the disabled or vulnerable people. 6. Journeys to financial institutions. 7. For reasons of force majeure or situations of necessity. 8. Any other activity that is justifiably necessary. To sum up, people in Spain will from today only be able to move around if they need to go to work, buy foodstuffs or purchase pharmaceuticals. The government is essentially locking down Spain, in measures that will go into force at 8am on Monday March 16, 2020.0 points

I´m not sure there´s a country in the world more ill-prepared to face the coronavirus than Venezuela: - Today, airports officials in Caracas were wearing masks, but there was no running water and no soap in the airport bathrooms; - WHO announced on Wednesday that there are only 3000 test kits for coronavirus in the entire country; - According to a report, in all Venezuela there are only 206 ICU beds and of those only 102 have ventilators, 50% of those are in Caracas; - 11 eleven venezuelan states have 0 ventilators; - Just a quick reminder: Venezuela has a population of almost 30 million people.0 points

Yeah I feel fine to be honest, even though I recently shook hands, kissed cheeks, attended an event of 80,000+ people, travelled through an airport, etc in a country that started to have a serious outbreak while out there. I might even get tested to be sure? After all, the reason it's in Spain is because of people who had gone there from Italy during the outbreak. Most cases were of people who were in Italy just as the outbreak started and then weren't diagnosed with the virus until over a week after actually being in Spain. I haven't been at work yesterday or today. My excuse is that I want to see if I come out with any symptoms, but in reality, I just couldn't be arsed going. It's only 2 days missed work, I can make it up in the next few weekends if I need to. Madrid has well over 2,000 now But Catalunya itself has 500+ now as well. I went there just at the right time as everything was as normal. Well, it could technically turn out being just at the wrong time if I have contracted it. La Sagrada Familia is closed and when you saw it on RTVE, the area around it looked quiet and you don't see that as it's usually full of people. It'd be difficult to buy it though as nobody would want to come near me0 points
