Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak

The UK has pretty much blindly allowed our government to rule by decree with arbitrary and ad hoc rules being implemented on a whim. Labour have barely stood up to them over it. Harsh and crippling lockdowns have been implemented on Labour areas with barely any extra economic support. I've been amazed out how the left has barely stood up to this Tory government over this tbh, it's supported nearly every measure without complaint.

You might make a recovery in 3 days and decide that it makes you 'immune'. Apparently that's a thing now.

The wonders of the American healthcare system! xD

My wife's talked me out of taking a test saying "we don't have covid" (not a compelling argument imo) and proving to me that I still have my sense of taste/smell (this was the more compelling argument). She thinks the wildfires around us are impacting the air quality which is making me feel a bit sick. We haven't really gone outside very much in the last few days though, so I'm not sure how much of an impact the air outside would make?

I am still not 100% convinced I don't have covid... but being able to taste/smell things does have me thinking maybe I was a bit paranoid.

We're on a bit of a rotation at work, where we've got two "teams" and we switch off when which weeks each team goes to the office. I appreciate the thought put behind trying to keep us distant and fairly safe, but I can't help but feel it's inevitable that I'm going to catch the disease probably at my office.

In seriousness, you should definitely get a test. A lot of people get it without symptoms so the taste and smell test is reassuring but irrelevant. If you don't have it you should take the test so you know for sure that you're not spreading it. If you do have it you should take the test so that you know you need to stay away from people. Either way the best thing to do is take the test and find out to remove the risk of you spreading it by accident which is going to make you feel like a dick down the line.

You're right and I've used this argument on my wife and convinced her, so we're off to get tested at a drive-thru testing location in a few minutes.

Will you be going on a tour of your neighbourhood in the car if you get the all clear???

I’ll probably just keep staying at home except for if I’m on a rotation to be back at the office if I test negative. Or if I need to buy food and shit like that.

So no Trumpian tour of my neighborhood if I test negative. He tested positive though, so maybe that’s the correct procedure in the US if I test positive.

If I test positive I’ll stay inside for 2 weeks (or however long) til I’m better. The info I got after testing recommends staying in isolation for 10 days, so I’ll probably do that so as to not accidentally kill anyone

Why don’t they extend the magical barrier that seems to be protecting the south?

Is anyone still listening to the rules over there? Genuine question. From what I hear hardly anyone (North or South) is wearing a mask out and about apart from when they have to, and even then it's far from 100%.

This was inevitable from way back when the Cummings Barnard Castle thing happened and the entire government lied to everyone to protect one man and we all knew they were doing it, and they knew we knew. 'We're all in this together' died on that day. There are a number of smaller issues such as dreadful communication and the number of u-turns they've made making people think well I think this rule is stupid and they might repeal it anyway so why bother?

The biggest problem is still the Test and Trace not being up to scratch. It's been the case for months now so people seem to have forgotten about it but it still isn't fixed. You can't expect it to be fixed either when the quality control in place is so paper thin that it took them days to realise that copy and pasting into an Excel spreadsheet that didn't have enough rows meant a load of the data got lost.

Utter nonsense. England doesn't actually realise what a basket case it has become because Trump is over the other side of the pond making everyone else look vaguely sane.

This is hugely stereotypical, but in my own experience, it’s usually scally cunts (girl and a lad) with a kid in tow in Asda, or older people that think they’re bulletproof who aren’t wearing the masks around schools, shops etc.

Been out quite a few times and mask-wearing is quite prevalent.

From what I've seen, most are compliant. My observation being that majority of those that aren't compliant are black people.

I think I mentioned a few weeks ago after going to Reading or Westfield (can't remember which) but it was noticeably black people (male & female) who weren't wearing masks. And to me, this was odd given the well-documented threat of COVID to the health of BAME people. Of course they may all have their own legitimate reasons as to why they shouldn't wear a mask, but I very much doubt 100% of these people seen all fell in to that category.

Additionally, I still can't fathom why people wear a mask but don't cover their nose with it. It literally is beyond any discernible logic to go the (minimal) effort to put the mask on but not cover one of the areas it needs to cover to be efficient. It's just stupidity in action.

And from when I've been to pubs and restaurants there seems to be the required distancing between tables (I've never felt uncomfortable in them) and they've obliged with taking details of who's booked. Although the restaurant I went to must have breached some GDPR because it just looked like it was a notepad and it was names and mobile numbers. Anyone could have taken anyone else's - it was just there on the bar counter xD. Other places have it electronically. Some pubs I've been to have done table service and it's worked fine from my experience.

So Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle are to be plunged into another full lockdown, against the wishes of their leaders and people. Whilst Tory areas with similar infection rates are left alone. This is a political decision and not based on science at all.

Is it the same government making the decisions across all those locations?

When you say a political decision I presume you mean an economic decision?

No I mean political, the Tories are happy to plunge the Labour cities in economically devastating lockdowns (despite nearly no evidence that local lockdowns work) because they know they have no chance of winning elections there. London is seeing a massive rise also but is not going to have these measures implemented. They won't touch their areas for fear of losing votes because these lockdowns are becoming increasingly unpopular.

The tide is beginning to turn, resentment is growing, this cannot go on indefinitely.

That's me and the wife had our yearly flu jab yesterday and as per normal it does give me mild symptoms of the flu but man I feel like death warmed up, can't eat, headache the lot, I have just been lying on the sofa sleeping on and off, I know I read that some people who have had the COVID bug have said it's just like having the flu, fuck that, just had my first coffee and that has seemed to help.

I'd love to know the infection rates from pubs and restaurants. Is there any evidence that they are causing the increase?

I don't think there is.

Starmer asked for evidence of the 10pm curfew to be published and on what scientific grounds was it imposed, and I guess as a result of that will be the results of how effective it has been. Not very, I'd imagine, considering they're thinking about further lockdowns and restrictions in the north, which I think is grossly unfair.

I think I read the other day that Boris' own constituency (Uxbridge) has a higher infection rate than those that have been in lockdown throughout summer, yet that have been no further restrictions placed there. As @The Artful Dodger says, it is wholly political and I don't get what Tories gain out of this other than further hatred and resentment back on them. The decisions don't make sense outside of the political alignment.

London surely isn't a great example? In recent elections, they have voted overwhelmingly for Labour in both the mayoral and parliamentary elections. I suppose they could win seats there whereas they never will in Liverpool.
