So What's Going On With These Strikes?

Whenever I click on a news item regarding this story, I don't get any specifics what what the issues actually are. Actors/writers saying the studios are being too greedy, studios saying the protestors are being unrealistic. But what are the demands and are they fair or unfair?

From The Guardian:

What does Sag-Aftra want? And why can’t they get it?
One of the union’s main roles is to negotiate terms with the studios: the last major agreement was signed in July 2020 though it was almost immediately undermined by Covid. That agreement was due to expire on 30 June, hence the start of negotiations. One of the main sticking points appears to be residuals, the payments that performers receive for repeat showings of films or TV shows, while the issue of who owns an actor’s likeness if it is reproduced by AI is also a major flashpoint. Sag-Aftra negotiators are demanding residuals partly based on viewership levels on streaming services but the studios – which include streamers Netflix and Amazon alongside Disney – aren’t willing to share the information.

I know the main point of contention is residuals but I'm talking more about the specific amounts that they want and how they expect/want it to work. And from the studios point of view, giving more of a specific breakdown of why they think it's financially unrealistic.

The studios will never share the information because then the actors and writers will come down on them for residuals that could potentially hurt profits long-term for the studios. Right now, paying someone 20 million for a 3-digit return or 3x return on the acting investment is a sweet deal even for something that totally tanks. It was a long time coming honestly and some are saying this negotiation will run until Jan next year.

As for AI writing stuff, what's stopping a writer from doing the same? Hey ChatGPT help me with this. We aren't very far away from it being a reality and honestly the writers had it coming. Studios are always going to look to cheaper avenues without the core funding coming from success on previous ventures. Disney is the best example of this, they are bleeding from loses right now and if they can fire more staff to get a product out and spend even less time having real actors in a movie why wouldn't they go that route?

The Salma Hayek episode (Joan is Awful) of the new Black Mirror season is more and more relevant xD

Saw that. Her voice gives me nightmares though.

Salma Hayek is great!!!!!!

No doubt, very talented and good looking woman. I am usually a fan of raspy voices too, but she sounds like she smokes (at least) 20 packs of cigarettes a day.
