Celtic vs Rangers is always guaranteed to be feisty. It's on today. Celtic aiming to continue their unbeaten season so far. Rangers will want to destroy that run.

One derby I've always wanted to go to is Boca vs River Plate. My mate went when he was travelling in South America. Got so jealous watching his videos. The atmosphere seemed so toxic and ultra intense. So much energy buzzing around. Deafening sound. Same with the Belgrade derby which he also got to attend, the lucky git.

El Clasico is good because of the teams and players on show. For fan atmosphere, it doesn't seem to rate that high?

Liverpool vs Everton seems to have dulled down in recent years? The 'friendly derby' isn't it? Seems to now live up to that name :D

You've no idea how much that description ruffles my jimmies.

I'll probably be watching the Old Firm derby today too, half of me wants Rangers to win as I find it embarrassing that Celtic can go into the history books for going a full season undefeated when you see what dross they've got in front of them. Totally dominant on the domestic scale and totally out of their depth in Europe, if they ever made the move down to the English leagues they'd be mauled.

true. it's not Celtic's fault, however. It also begs the question why they've not done it before and perhaps that emphasises just how average (?) they are in the grand scheme of things.

Title should be best plastic derby.

A derby only matters to the 2 clubs supporters. If it's about biggest/best then it has absolutely nothing to do with the derby itself and everything to do with a neutrals interpretation of how good the two teams are.

If you measure how much it means to the actual supporters then you can list many games that have no prestige outside of the locals involvement.

Well, yes, if for some bizarre reason Celtic and presumably Rangers too, didn't get the TV money and all other income streams from playing in the Premier League, they'd struggle. But it's absolutely incorrect to suggest that Celtic and Rangers (if ran correctly) wouldn't be competitive in the Premier League.

As for derbies, I have a family link to it but the Tyne-Wear Derby is probably the one I view as the biggest and most toxic in this country. I absolutely must do the next one, I've sworn to myself I will but I think it will be a couple of years before there is one again.

Celtic v Rangers is a huge one too, I want to do that one as well. Going to try and do FC Köln and Borussia Monchengladbach next season.

The Merseyside Derby? Superclasico? El Clasico?

Which is the best derby in modern football and why?

The Super Clásico (River v Boca or vice versa) is the biggest authentic proper derby in the world because El Clásico (Barça v Real Madrid or vice versa) is from two different cities.

But as one match standing alone the Barcelona v Real Madrid clash is the biggest football match on earth by miles.  I have to say that one of bucket list things to do is to assist at a Superclásico before I die.  I can't miss out on that and I want it to be at La Bombonera.

I wont be talking about the famous ones like Merseyside or NLD because many of you already know about them.

Not many people know this but the Kolkata Derby in India between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan is one of the (or the top in Asia) top derbies in the world. Just because football is not very popular in India, its not spoken about much by the media and other parts of the country.

Yeah thats implied when I said no one talks about it in the country itself. Some asian football fans outside India know about it but not much overall

The TW Derby needs some time off. It is just boring now, not just on the pitch but away from it. Fans are escorted by the Police as soon as they make it into the other city and other than far spackers rigged out in the club shop's finest giving it the biggun behind the safety of Police dogs, vans etc. it doesn't have the hatred that it used to and even inside the grounds the atmosphere is shite. Would be good if we could go up for a few years and SAFC stay down and then meet then, let the hatred build back up.

Saw a video pop up on Facebook of the Millwall geezer knocking out the Spurs fan singing we all hate Millwall and whilst it was funny to see because of how fucking stupid it was of them, that being my Saturday afternoon would destroy me. Imagine waking up in the morning thinking the highlight of your day would be hitting a random pissed up football fan. Proper inbred.

Perth Glory v Wellington Phoenix in the distance derby. Nothing else compares, the fight and passion that comes from the two sides being roughly 3267 miles apart is astonishing and the world needs to recognise such a fierce derby. What a spectacle.

In terms of actual rivalry there aren't any particularly interesting ones in England, the rivalries are not much more than 'we don't like them because they're near to us'.

That's basically what most 'derbies' are though. 99% of these matches aren't even derbies anyway and strictly speaking, only Wigan Vs Saints is a derby match in Rugby League. But that's just getting pedantic.

True but in other countries there are often political/economic/cultural factors at a play, it can sometimes be too much but it makes the rivalry more interesting and fierce.

I prefer Inter v Juve. NOW that is a culture clash.

AC Milan vs Juve is/can be more heated. Probably due to historical reasons due to both sides successes.

Where Italy is concerned, I went some years back to a Lazio v Roma derby and I must say I didn't feel safe and thought something crazy was going to happen at any moment.  The worst part was having a drink after the game...  You could sense people observing you to capture who'd you supported at the game (I wasn't wearing colours).
