Why so cheap? Contract running low?

He's just undervalued for some reason. His transfer value has been around £30 million to £40 million for ages.

I think that the main reason why his valuation is relatively low, is because he is not proven in a major league. But we have seen plenty of great Champions League performances by him to suggest that he could definitely hack it in a major European league.

He had a £25m release clause in the summer I'm sure and I think the only club who bid for him was Sevilla. Suppose most clubs don't think he is worth it considering he is 27 next month and hasn't proved it in a top 5 league.

I don't buy that argument. Mertens joined Napoli when he was 27 iirc.

Fair enough mate. Seems a relative bargain for Chelsea at this stage. Let's see how he steps up.

Think he’s a late bloomer in terms of potential. Only really started performing at a quality level since 2018. He’s adapted his game too. 1st leg against us he tried to dribble through us. 2nd leg he hurt us bad as he found pockets of space to delivery passes.

Exactly he joined Napoli.

Oh ok let's just pretend Napoli wasn't the second best Italian team of the past decade where Mertens became a key figure to those title runs. I guess the Italian league isn't a top 5 European league in that case...

Napoli are/were quality at the time.

Napoli gave us some of our hardest games in europe over the past couple of seasons whilst we were wiping the floor with teams such as Bayern, Barcelona, Man City etc

It has nothing to do with that and it's a crap comparison anyway. Mertens was brought for under €10m and he didn't have anywhere near the pedigree or hype Ziyech has.

Well if that's the case looks like you missed the point.

No club wants Ziyech according to you because of his age, yet players like Mertens perfectly prove that the Dutch league is close enough really. Age in most cases does matter if you haven't played in Europes top leagues before 27, but I think the Eredivisie is strong enough for players to move up the ladder even by then.

Him not having Ziyech's pedigree is irrelevant except when it comes to expectation.

What are you going on about, I never said no club wanted him I merely responded to MadLad as to why he was so 'cheap' and didn't garner any major interest until Chelsea had just picked him up. I'm only saying him turning 27 soon probably turned some clubs off him considering the outlay.

Once again Mertens cost a 4th of what Ziyech cost, so a much lower risk transfer and why they're not remotely comparable.

What an outlandish claim. In case you forgot, the market has hugely inflated since 2013. That was the year Gareth Bale went for 100M and shocked the world. Nowadays that is common practice. Literally the only thing you are right on is that Mertens didn't have the pedigree that Ziyech now has.

25-45M is piss cheap in todays market. Besides my only argument was that Mertens went when he was 27, so age in the Eredivisie for the most part doesn't matter. It's important in less physical leagues but the Netherlands is not one of them.
