European Super League

The Uefa congress is taking place today and they have just released the following statement about the European Super League:

The 55 member associations and participants in the Uefa Congress condemn the declaration of a so called “Super League.” The Uefa Congress is adamant that the closed “Super League” goes against the very concept of what it is to be European: unified, open, supportive, and principled on sporting values. Uefa and its member associations believe in a truly European model that is founded on open competitions, solidarity and redistribution to ensure the sustainability and development of the game for the benefit of all and the promotion of European values and social outcomes.

The conspirator clubs have obviously failed to see that their status today was not achieved in isolation, but rather was part of a dynamic European system where big, medium and small clubs have all contributed to the successes and losses of everyone. It is an affront to European values and sporting merit for them to assume they are entitled to “separate” and lay claim to the legacy that everyone built.

Uefa, its member associations and all those who love football stand firm and will strongly resist and fight against this move by these clubs’ owners and their backers to the fullest extent possible. We know, morally, what is at stake and will protect football from a selfish clan who care nothing for the game. We are European football. They are not.

Have they not created an "Exit" hashtag for this yet? We've had #Brexit, #Megxit, #Lexit, #Frexit, etc. What would we call this?

#£xit

or

#€xit

NHL is on strike or locked out every 10yrs or so. Used to be a fan of hockey but their squabbling ended it for me

It is better than what happens in the NFL. At least the hockey dudes get security, guaranteed money, not the same in the NFL, a player can smash his body to pieces to get a contract and get paid next to nothing because of injury.

The "they've done bad stuff previously" angle people are spouting is tiresome. Yes, we get there all money grabbing vultures, but this is about the protection of the competitive integrity of the sport.

One rapes, two rapes? whats the diff?

Most of these clubs are probably using the ESL to strongarm the TV deals more in their favour. They probably feel like it won’t go through but they can use the fear generated to get even more of the TV pie. Classic agent transfer tactic.

Injuries are part of it. NFL only play 1x a week. Smaller schedule too.
what u do in your spare time is what they get to do.
Dunno think all players get paid pretty well for playing a game. It’s in their job description: “players”.

Disagree. Someone that is on an entry level contract that faces the same chances of getting crunched by 10 200kg men should have the same contract security as someone with guaranteed money. It doesn't matter if it is a sport or not.

Falling out of a cherry picker and getting electrocuted is a part of working as a lineworker for an energy company, they should be comped for that danger.

How much is the entry contract?

Spurs vs Inter would be like WBA vs Burnley in the ESL. No one else would be interested except the fans of the teams. I wonder if City, Chelsea, Man U and Liverrpool pull out of this league, will ESL be good with Arsenal and Spuds in the league?

It doesn't matter because it isn't guaranteed. Play one snap and get your ankle destroyed for the rest of your life and won't see a cent more than the signing bonus. It is a system that protects the teams and NFL's health at the expense of the player. At least the NHL players will get paid for the remained of the contract.
