So labour are introducing a new working bill. I don't know all of it but one of the things is workers will have the right to switch of. So companies can't expect you to do work when your not actually in work. Will also apparently be addressing 0 hour contracts. I'm not overly keen on starmer but at least it's better than the conservatives

Kemi Badenoch & Robert Jendrick are the 2 final choices for the Tories now. Crazy how low the bar is with them.

Some bookies already have it odds-on they'll have another leadership contest before the end of 2025 because their final candidates are both so awful. xD

Labour really need to sort themselves out. Some of this gift/donation scandal is actually scandalous but now the media are nit-picking over concert tickets that they've declared because in terms of declarations, Labour are doing things above board. Angela Rayner was invited into that DJ booth in Ibiza for a laugh but she still declared it as a gift of a few hundred quid because that's what a normal holiday-maker would have to pay that much to go into the booth. The next day the media report that "Rayner accepts £800 gift for Ibiza holiday". You can never defend corrupt or dishonest politicians but when the media act in such bad faith to generate clicks and drama, you can see why some politicians take their chances with not declaring things if they think they can get away with it.

Starmer has made a poor start overall though. I don't actually have a problem with the pensioners' fuel allowance. It's means-tested, it isn't being taken away from those who need it, but retired pensioners living in £500,000 houses with gardens, spare rooms, etc. don't need £200 a year to pay for their heating bills, let's be honest. It's so frustrating though that when Labour have won such a big majority and have so much political capital to play with, they haven't tried to be more radical by increasing taxes on the richest people to start filling the huge black holes in the funding of public services. The state of the NHS, public transport, schools, policing in the UK are an absolute disgrace for a developed country.

Kemi Badenoch chosen as new Tory leader xD

They've got no hope of ever winning an election again.

2029 is a long time away but Reform and Lib Dems will make more gains than the Tories will by then.

I wouldn’t be so sure, I’ve heard and seen plenty of people say things like “well we had a reactionary government for 14 years that broke the country, but labour hasn’t fixed this all in several months and I’m genuinely pissed off about it.”

The electorate has the memory of a goldfish I’d fully expect the tories to do better than lib dems in 2029.

I'd say majority of Tories identify themselves with Reform more than the current Tory party.

Badenoch is just a car crash waiting to happen. She doesn't have the credentials to mount a proper challenge to the PM. She's too right wing for where the Tories want to be. It's what lost them the last election and deep down I don't think Sunak believed a lot of what he was doing or said he was going to do. Badenoch isn't a good fit for what that party needs. She just as bad as Rees-Mogg, Johnson, Patel etc.

Lib Dems just need to quietly go about their business and campaign well in a few years time. I don't even think Badenoch will be tory leader by the next election, to be honest. There's too much division in the party and she doesn't strike me as someone to bring people together.

I think them going about things quietly is one of their main issues. The Labour Party suck and the Tories are psychos. The Lib Dems need to make sure everybody knows that.

Some people are calling for a general election. Although polls show that Labour would still win. I don't think Labour are that great. They are just better than the conservatives.

What do people on here think of the farmers inheritance tax row? From what I understand farmers are asset rich but not necessarily cash rich. I think the argument is that if they inherit a property over £1million they have to pay the inheritance tax on it. Say the property is worth £2million where are they gonna get £200000 from? I do see the issues.

@nudge @Dr. Gonzo @Devil-Dick Willie @Spike you are always good with this stuff. Thoughts?

The protest last week was blown well out of proportion. Something like only 5% of farmers would actually be affected, but everyone bought into the media hysteria in that all farmers were being fucked over.

Funny how the driving force behind this petition is the "WiLL oV tHE pEOplE" enthusiasts who have insisted for over 8 years that the Brexit referendum should be permanently binding and the public should never ever be asked if they've changed their mind.

A six month old General election result where a party won over 400 out of 650 seats is fair game though xD.

And yes people have scraped data from the list of signatories and a huge number of them are from overseas signalling a high level of bot activity funded by hostile powers once again interfering in politics.

Are farmers the ones that own the land? Or do they lease it from a holding company or the state?

@Gunnersaurus I was called and will answer. Like @nudge UK agricultural issues aren't exactly in my thoughts, but good economic policy oft is.

So there is currently a rule that prevents farmers paying inheritance tax on their property, and that is being rolled back to cover only the first 1 million pounds of value on the farm land. Beyond that, they will pay tax on 50% of the remaining value, at a rate of 20% (instead of 40%) that can be paid over 10 years interest free.
Additionally, you get 500k nil rate inheritance that stacks on tip of that, which is also per person mind you, so a farmer with 2 owners would be completely tax free at even a value of 3 million if it had 2 owners.

That is an ABSURDLY gentle tax on a high value productive asset. Tell your farmers to fuck off.

This is my take as well.
