...Dan
The Killing of a Sacred Deer Just as weird as Lanthimos' previous films, though probably not as good as Dogtooth or The Lobster. I'm not sure about my rating, I'll probably watch it again soon. For now I'll give it an 8/10. Brilliant performance by Barry Keoghan. Moderator Tommy Posted November 3, 2017 Moderator Share Posted November 3, 2017 Oh yea, I rewatched Prisoners the other day. Fucking masterpiece in my opinion. Perfect acting from everyone involved, the soundtrack is amazing, the cinematography is flawless. I loved Jake Gyllenhaal's character so much. 10/
ASF
I watched two of the best nominees, for last year's Best Picture Oscar: Hacksaw Ridge and Fences. Two completely different stories, but two great movies. 9/10 for both of them.

His best ever performance for me.
Guest
Saw Thor Ragnarok. Blown away compared to the previous 2. This is the best of them all by many miles.
IgnisExcubitor
Just came back from Thor Ragnarok and it's the most entertaining Marvels movie (Civil War was a complete package and a serious fare). The humour sets this movie apart and is the film's biggest asset. If you watched Taika Waititi's previous two movies then you will know what to expect. The fight scenes are kept short and that's a relief. Destruction porn no longer seems entertaining, but the end fight scene in this movie with Blanchett's army gets your spine tingling, largely because of that Led Zeppelin track. Tessa Thompson is quite a show stealer, but Jeff Goldblum being Jeff Goldblum and the character of Korg (played by the director) are brilliant. PS: I did not expect that guest appearance. Hilarious but shocking, and no I am not talking about Cumberbatch. Edited November 7, 2017 by IgnisExcubitor

Lucas
No Super Sunday so today has been film day. Was going to watch something I'd downloaded and then saw War Horse was on. Somehow I've never seen this film and heard great things. Visually, a beautiful piece of filmmaking with impressive camerawork/cinematography, a well-put-together cast, not to mention a magnificent musical score by John Williams. The war reenactments and locations are positively stunning of realism, The story is almost too excellent to be true. Overall, this is a fantastic slice of Spielberg, albeit a little Disneyesque which does make things a bit too predictable and sickly at times, but still thoroughly engrossing. 8/10. IgnisExcubitor
Imagine a terribly unfunny sitcom episode where the protagonists mums come to visit them for Christmas, causing things to go bad, before everyone learns valuable family lessons in the end. That's what Bad Mom's Christmas basically is.
True Blue
Prisoners 9/10 One of the best movies i watched for awhile really, Jake Gyllenhaal is one sexy talented fucker. Also maybe i am wrong but a very underrated actor.

Also maybe i am wrong but a very underrated actor. And it's definitely worth a couple of re-watches. There's so much symbolism in that movie that you don't even notice the first or second time. Loki (Gyllenhaal) is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever seen in a movie. Mysterious yet morally impeccable. I read a theory that he's meant to represent some kind of god, which is interesting in hindsight: Quote Look at Loki. He symbolizes something greater than a mere detective. i get the feeling that be represents a sort of Fate or God in an abstract sense. Not necessarily omniscient or omnipotent but trying to be. My reasons for thinking this? His name is a Norse god's name. When do we first see him? In a Chinese restaurant discussing astrological signs in the Chinese zodiac. When Loki is interrogating the Dovers, there's a close up of a cross on his left hand. Across Loki's right knuckles are the Western astrological signs. He has a mason's ring--a secret organization that requires a belief in a supreme being. He symbolizes a sort of universal deity--a force of nature--outside of religious definition. He isn't like the perfect Christian god. He's a lot more flawed like the Greek gods or other pantheons, and he simply tries to do his best to keep the moral fabric of the universe from tearing apart. You can see it when he tries to keep eyes on everyone involved with the case. He's also never lost a case. And, here's the big thing--whenever Dover prays to God for help, Loki appears soon after. When Keller confesses to God after hurting Alex and asks for help, Loki appears. When Keller prays for his daughter, we move to Loki saving his daughter. There are other moments, but Keller's prayers are always answered with Loki acting soon after. We know the Jones want to destroy faith in God. If symbolically Loki represents a more down-to-earth version of God, that's precisely what happens slowly to Dover throughout the movie. Dover can't just leave it to Loki. Dover has to act because he doesn't trust Loki. There's the preacher on the radio who talks of man being born into sin and into trouble that he cannot prevent. That's something Dover cannot accept. He's a survivalist, a man who thinks he can handle anything. He lacks faith, captures Alex, blames Loki for delaying the case, and suffers for it. It's only when he prays deep in that dark hole that things start to work out. Like Jona in the belly of the beast or Job who holds onto his faith. Compare this with Terrance Howard who admits what he's doing to Alex is wrong in some way, admits it, and gets his daughter back rather miraculously. Back to the Jones. They lose their child and lose their faith in God. I don't think the use of snakes is just a whimsical choice. The snake plays a role in the Garden of Eden story and in the Norse gods torture of Loki. They lose their sense that the universe is just or that there is a cosmic form of karma and justice. Loki, as a police officer, represents that slow, but patient justice that soon sets things back into place. It's easy to see why Dover and the Jones are wary or distrustful of Loki. One could argue that he represents a sinister figure--Loki is a deceiver god. Zodiac and astrological signs point to mysterious forces and a tip to the Zodiac killer, who I think may have been mentioned or alluded to. Loki was in a boy's home with sex-offender priests so I feel like he was potentially abused. It explains the tick, his obsession and intensity with this case, and hints that he's like Alex and the Maze Man. It goes hand-in-hand with themes like doubt, faith, mystery and uncertainty. tldr: Fucking awesome movie.

IgnisExcubitor
Saw 'Justice League' and it's not as bad as critics are making it out to be. Sure it's not comparable to Marvels movies, which are innovative and funny, but this was much much better than Batman vs Superman. Flash and Aquaman steal the show. The villain is terrible. I am only basing my review on the last 90 mins of the movie. The couple in my row were having sex and despite being a 30 year old adult, my senses were fully focused on them during the first 30mins and I didn't see a thing on the screen. IgnisExcubitor
Afternoon shows, @Mel81x, generally afternoon shows, in multiplexes and not single screen theatres. Multiplexes tend to alway be sparsely filled. Funnily, in the past, when a couple left a show after interval I used to think they didn't like the movie. It all changed for me after that one show of Bewoulf. I generally tend to select my seats away from couples, when I am booking, especially if it's good movie. Also gotta feel sad for the staff that cleans the place. Edited November 21, 2017 by IgnisExcubitor
