Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has described the relegation as a “new extraordinary twist”, adding: “As told by El Larguero, the €700m buy out clause DOES NOT exist in last season's contract (and the club had not realised?).

:/

La Liga have just announced the 700m release clause is legally binding.

Looks like they don’t want Messi to leave either

Losing Ronaldo and Messi in a 2-year span is a huge blow for the league.

Spanish football always had the problem of too many weak small teams at the bottom but the stars at Real and Barça have always compensated for it. If Messi leaves this is a huge problem because an Eibar x Barcelona without Messi is not that attractive to global audiences.

Tebas will do everything he can to help Barcelona keep Messi.

Lol of course they don’t. All of those 12 year olds that watch Messi like Teso watched Ronaldo would probably never watch La Liga again.

I think we might even fill the stadium next season and need to also extend it again 😄

Seems to be all about the date.... To be able to leave he had to make the request by 10th June which obviously expired when they were not playing due to Covid complications so La Liga are trying to tie him down to the full release clause of 642MILL. Obviously they will not be keen on losing the jewel in the La Liga crown given that Ronaldo has also moved on..

If he is serious and does want to leave then they should be happy he served with distinction for club and league and let him move on... No point in trying to keep hold of an unhappy player who's heart might not be in it at Barcelona anymore... Strange though, he is one of those players who you could never see playing anywhere else and hanging up his boots at the club..

The agreement was for within 10 days of the CL final, Messi believes he is now a free agent and won't be returning to Barca

Weird to see a league release a statement on a player's contract with his club. La Liga is run like a joke though.

Massive blow for La Liga obviously.

There's more money in the PL than ever and they brought in all the best managers in recent years. Italy and France seem to be getting more attention. The tendency should be for La Liga to lose relevancy. Messi draws a ton of viewers I'd imagine.

Wow! Spanish radio network Onda Cero had access to Messi's contract and this is what it states:

“This compensation will not apply when the termination of the contract due to the player’s unilateral decision takes effect from the end of the 2019/20 season.

If that's true then Messi is right as it doesn't mention a specific date. To be honest, even if it did mention a specific date, Messi has a case as that date was dependent on when the season was originally set to finish.

The original agreement was for 10 days of the CL final and that is all they should focus on with the covid situation   ..if it drags out he can buy his last year out for 52miillion, we just add that on to his signing fee  ..Barca are in a very bad position if Messi sticks to his guns, failed to turn up for training today because he believe's he is a free agent

Manchester City has requested to a production company to gather a collection of archive images of Messi in order to prepare audiovisual material in case the signing is completed.

Seems like City is very optimistic.

Man City is the pedestrian choice

It's more a Guardiola thing than a City thing

I agree but also players like De Bruyne, Sterling, Aguero etc would of had some impact on his decision  ..the thoughts of De Bruyne feeding Messi has me most intrigued  :35_thinking:

What's the latest on this story in general, has he got a way out or is he playing a huge game of bluff to get the president out?

It seems like he wants to come to City and link up with Pep but who really knows whats going on :what:  ..Aguero has given up his number 10 shirt, Pep's been out to Barca, Messi has missed training/testing today  ..that's all we can go off right now

I don't know. I'd personally say Serie A is quite awful. It's a league for old players to retire nowadays and has been for years. It's actually that league what La Liga is becoming like now. Bog standard leagues for old players. The Serie A is just a name that lives off the past and has done for years. But this is what La Liga is going to be now itself, it's going to be full of 38 year old David Silvas, Claudio Bravos and Cazorlas, going back home to finish off their careers.

The Bundesliga is one that stands out for me, but it has no future itself. It won't be able to grow as Premier league clubs will just buy all their players, as is already happening now. The likes of Kavertz, Sancho, Haaland, etc may be quality young players but they aren't the Bundesliga's future(like they should be) unless Bayern pick any of them up unfortunately.

With City's lawyers now examining the clause in Messi's contract that gives them hope they can sign the Argentine for free, beleaguered Barca bosses hope that the Blues will agree to a players-plus-cash deal rather than take a £630million gamble in court.

Sunday Mirror Sport understands that both clubs believe Messi is bound for the Etihad.

And that the only detail that remains is whether Messi signs for City with Barcelona's blessing - or the terms of the most controversial transfer in football history are decided by either FIFA or the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Messi has told the Catalan giants that he is leaving the Nou Camp – and he wants to link up again with Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.

In another revealing twist to the tale, Bartomeu has now sacked Barcelona's legal team at the Cuatrecasas law firm after discovering they had also advised Messi that he is within his rights to quit the club. :4_joy::8_laughing:

It has been reported in Argentina that Messi's father. Jorge, will arrive in Spain on Sunday in a bid to resolve the situation and secure Messi's departure to City.

Messi has informed Barcelona that he will NOT be reporting to the club for Covid-19 testing on Sunday.

Paris St Germain stars Neymar and Angel Di Maria have tried to persuade Messi to join them – and the French club have even offered to beat the wage package City have tabled.

Juventus and Inter Milan both want to take the forward to Italy.

But it now seems a question of when the 'Welcome to Manchester' posters will be put up for Messi.
