The career decline of Joe Hart has been nothing short of incredible. He's now gone from England number 1 to getting binned from Spurs second choice keeper in four years!!!

How on earth has the rejection from club and country damaged him so much.

Torino

Burnley

West Ham

Spurs

Other than Torino he's basically declined to an absolute shambles.

I was thinking the same, he's 34 which for a GK isn't that old. Not only was he first choice for England for three tournaments, he was probably one of the first on the team sheet at international level for five or so years.

Surely, when he was second choice at several of these clubs, he could've quite easily got a moneyspinning move to China or maybe the MLS?

Another dud goalkeeper to add to their collection.

Exactly, the thing with the keeper is it doesn't matter if you step down in standard league wise your role doesn't really change much other than you have to go more direct with your kicking.

If he's declined that much then what good is he to Celtic.

At one point it was looking like he was going to break records for the number of caps collected.

De Gea is going through a similar thing at United but given his size of contract we clearly feel we need to try and rebuild him. Some keepers minds are so fragile, they make a number of mistakes and that huge confidence they once had goes. With Joe it was the goal against Wales at EURO 2016 and the rejection from Pep.

Remember Paul Robinson of Leeds and Spurs, he was another, England number one to Blackburn bench in a fast amount of time as well, Richard Wright was another.

The thing about De Gea is being in the most prominent position for one of the most famous clubs in the world, every move he makes is under a microscope. This seems to go two ways; when he makes a decent save it ends up being nominated for save of the season, when he lets a dodgy goal in suddenly he's the weak link that needs replacing.

Yes, Paul Robinson did seem to disappear quite quickly, just looked him up now and can't believe he was at Blackburn for 7 years.

Better, cheaper and younger option available for around the same money. But another season and another short term fix plucked from the EPL instead.

Would be better than Scott Bain, most Scottish Premiership goalkeepers would be, but what's the point in bringing in a player who you'd still be looking to replace?

After all the years of being nowhere, it's actually a very strange feeling knowing that our main and backup goalkeeper are both better than all of Celtic's goalkeepers. When you consider how much money they've been making from winning and selling players while we were playing Montrose with Kevin Kyle as our leading man...

They're actually clueless.

Genuinely astonished that they went into their biggest game of the season against Midtjylland with Scott Bain. It's not like it's been a surprise, think most Celtic fans were done with Barkas by the winter break last season.

When there have been so many times to bring in cheap, and much better options. Václav Hladký left St Mirren on a free last summer and would have easily been available for them, whilst Benjamin Siegrist is still at Dundee United and available for probably £1m or less.

Their scouting seems just be currently looking at who is out of favour at EPL clubs. With the disastrous signings of Shane Duffy and Jonjoe Kenny last year, you'd have though they might have avoided that market again. Especially as it's not exactly filled with bargains, they all earn 3/4x as much as similar talented players elsewhere.

A panic option where the only positive thing you can say is that it’s hard to imagine him being remotely as bad as the other two have been so far.

I think a lot of people were willing to back Barkas and give him a bit of slack until Christmas, to see if he could play into a bit of form, but his performances have been so terrible that it’s come to this. Barkas or Bain would singlehandedly have us out of contention on all fronts within a few months.

It sounds like he’s taken a big pay cut at least to come, and hopefully it’s a short-ish contract.

Ultimately the most damning part of the signing is that, like in every other position of defence, you have no idea how good/bad he is going to be but you can be reasonably confident that the team would be improved by throwing him in as soon as possible.

What does your goalkeeping coach actually do if every keeper does the same mistakes? Their positioning and jumping of both hilariously bad.

From looks of it, trying to train them to play like Manuel Neuer.

Minus the strength, speed, agility, technique , reflexes, or tactical intelligence.

As long as they don’t shoot down to his left Hart will be a good signing.

His distribution is really good still too.

No doubt everyone is going to try and abuse his weakness like Roma did.

Three and four year deals, fucking hellxD

Hart is only on 15k so getting one or two passable seasons out of him before he slides down the pecking order for one or two seasons is just about bearable

McCarthy however could be a disaster, unless he has taken a massive pay cut. Best case scenario is he's a solid starter for at least a couple of seasons before injuries get to him. PL veterans can go either way up here - Arfield has done well. Others not so much.

I think the mental aspect of the game is often understated - and some players really struggle when they're under the microscope and don't perform and never really seem to get their confidence back. And I think in some positions, utterly losing your confidence leaves you a way lesser player. Especially for keepers.

Sort of like Karius, after his CL final blunders... his career has really tanked - he spent most of last season sitting on a bench at Union Berlin.

I think at the top level, but especially the very top of the top level... a lot of what separates keepers apart from each other is mostly their mentality. All keepers will make mistakes, the best keepers don't ever dwell on their mistakes and just keep going on trying to organise their defense and be as perfect of a keeper as possible.

With Hart and De Gea (who's lost form, but I think ultimately faired significantly better overall), they've both had intense media scrutiny with every blunder imo... I could see that getting to quite a lot of people, tbh. At the end of the day he's only human and I think his decline sort of reflects maybe a player that's more like a "normal person" in terms of confidence/anxiety/etc... that's probably less likely to "just move on" after high profile blunders.

But I'm just guessing lol
