National teams to support at the WC 2018

Recommended Posts

Who will you support on the World Cup from each continent/confederation? Don't have to include the country of your origin if they qualified.

For me:

AFC/Asia - Japan

CAF/Africa - Nigeria

CONCACAF/North America, Central America - Mexico

CONMEBOL/South America - Brazil

UEFA/Europe - England

This is a little different for moi as my home nation (USA) and my adopted nation (Italy) are both out of the World Cup. My 'team' this year will be Portugal as I have started following their domestic league. But to answer your question, here are mine -

AFC/Asia - Saudi Arabia

CAF/Africa - Egypt

CONCACAF/North America, Central America - Costa Rica

CONMEBOL/South America - Brazil

UEFA/Europe - Portugal or Russia

I see Japan are the hipster team again. Group H is pretty hipster-heavy in fact... I'll support all of them except Poland  Mexico as well, just to complete the list.

So that makes:

AFC/Asia - Japan

CAF/Africa - Senegal

CONCACAF/North America, Central America - Mexico

CONMEBOL/South America - Colombia

Argentina are the only team I'm particuarly interested in doing well, although I doubt they will. Other than that I'd just like to see a good, exciting tournament.

Australia and only Australia. I do like seeing players I like do well, I'd enjoy seeing Griezmann do wel for instancel but I don't care for France at all.

Hahaha... One thing a decent sized percentage of those that voted to leave can't change, is one fundamental thing.  The fact the UK is in the continent of Europe.  Some of them would love to invent a tugboat that could pull it a lot further out into the Atlantic. xD

Whoever plays fair and entertaining football.

With that I suggest you seriously give Uruguay a thought. ;)

Whereas ordinary people usually only eat plants and animals, it's said that some of the Uruguayan players eat people too which balances things. That's fair I guess.

You can't get fairer than that. Need more convincing?

Teams I want to see do well are

Asia. Japan

South America. Uruguay

Africa. Nigeria

Americas. Costa Rica

Europe. Obviously Germany, if that doesn't count then Denmark.

If Germany can't win it then Belgium or France wouldn't be the worst. Fuck Spain, Fuck Brazil and Fuck Argentina.

Teams I want to see nose dive into oblivion are

Australia. Brick layers going to the world cup in '5th' spot qualifying is criminal when Netherlands and Italy miss out. If only they had to play against a real team in the play offs, not a branch of Isis and a tax haven run by pirates.

England, only because the bantz would be tremendous.

Peru, but beat Australia 4-0 please.

Brazil.

Can’t remember who, but someone said an African nation would win the World Cup by a particular date. I’m lazy today so I won’t search for it but it ain’t happening anytime soon and neither is an Asian country winning it soon. Blatter is gone for those things to have any modum of possibility in the near future. Many things need to change like a major one which is investing massively in the sport, making it the primary sport and actually believing in it with a major cultural connection.

Aside from African nations which many of them are true passionate footballing nations (but are as corrupt as hell), I don’t see anything anywhere in Asia (maybe Japan sort of and Rep. of Korea) having all those important factors.

Do you have the same sentiments for Latin America that you do for Europe where football is concerned?  Becaise both confederations are by far the monopolising ones.

agreed.

I also remember on the old forum someone saying that USA would win the World Cup in the next 20 years (this was a few years ago). Can't see that happening either!

@SirBalon

Peles 10 Predictions

10) China 2002

Pele Prediction: China will qualify for the next round from their 2002 World Cup group.

Outcome: China finish bottom of Group C with no wins, no draws, no points, no goals, as well as -9 in their goal-difference column.

9) Spain 1998

Pele Prediction: Spain are favourites for the 1998 World Cup in France.

Outcome: Spain humiliatingly dumped out in the first round after losing to Nigeria, and drawing with Paraguay.

8) Colombia To Live American Dream

Pele Prediction: Colombia will win the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

Outcome: Colombia exit the competition in the first round, finishing bottom of their group. Their defender Andres Escobar is also tragically shot dead by an angry fan after Colombia return home.

7) Argentina, France & World Cup 2002

Pele Prediction: Argentina & France will both reach the final.

Outcome: Both countries eliminated in the first round, France without even scoring a goal.

6) Escape To Victory

Pele Prediction: During the famous film starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine, Allies star Pele is brutally fouled in the first half by the Nazi opponents. The injured Brazilian claims there is no way he can continue and is carried off. The Allies are 4-0 down, and a recovery is deemed impossible.

Outcome: Pele returns in the second half and inspires his team to an improbable comeback, even scoring a stunning bicycle kick. Even in fiction, Pele's predictions go wrong.

5) Ronaldo Is Finished

Pele Prediction: Ronaldo will never play football again, and his career is over, following a serious injury for Milan in February 2008.

Outcome: Ronaldo returns in March 2009 for Corinthians, scoring 10 goals in his first 14 games to win the Campeonato Paulista.

4) Nii Lamptey – ‘The New Pele’

Pele Prediction: After starring in the 1991 Under-17 World Cup, which also featured Alessandro Del Piero, Pele proclaims Ghana youngster Lamptey as his successor, ‘The New Pele’.

Outcome: What happens next goes down in football infamy. Lamptey spectacularly fails to fulfil his talent, believing himself that he was cursed by dark forces. The midfielder shifts around clubs such as PSV, Aston Villa, Coventry, Venezia and Ankaragucu, without success, and endures tragedy in his personal life, as two of his children die.

3) Nicky Barmby - Up There With Zidane, Maldini & Ronaldo

Pele Prediction: Nicky Barmby will become a world class star.

Outcome: Nicky Barmby becomes nothing more than an average player, winning 23 England caps, and never even appearing in a World Cup.

2) Africa Will Rule

Pele Prediction: An African nation will win the World Cup before the year 2000.

Outcome:  African country has still yet to get past the quarter-final.

1) Brazil & World Cup 2002

Pele Prediction: Brazil won’t even get past the group stages.

Outcome: Brazil win the World Cup.
