5210 new confirmed cases and 683 new deaths in Italy. Still many deaths but the increase in daily cases continues to fall; fourth day in a row now! And that's with more tests performed than in previous days. Seems that after two weeks we're indeed seeing the expected impact of the lockdown after all!

 :Italy:

Fingers crossed for further positive news in days and weeks to come -_-

16,000 arrested in Peru for not observing social distancing, according to BBC.

Think it's been more than that mate.

It's been extremely strict and the police/military have full control of everything as it stands.

Happy with how we've been doing. Ecuador, Chile and Brazil all skyrocketed in cases in the last 2 weeks while we are barely below 500 when early patterns suggested we would be in a bit of trouble.

Yeah, it did say 'over 16,000' rather than a flat figure.

Wouldn't you?

If this ripped through the population panic would ensue, mass varied behavioural changes would emerge causing wild negative economic outcomes. Likely to lead to economic turmoil that lasts years not months. Businesses would be destroyed with the absence of government support. Unemployment would last longer. Tourism would end for 2 years, which on its own probably accounts for enough lost transactions to constitute depression. Exports may collapse as buying nations would stop dealing with a country out of control due to risks. Just one large pariah state threatens the whole world.

Lives versus economy is a false choice.

No one would be forced out of a job. People would still be using pubs and clubs and shops. Even at a reduced rate, its way better than where we're at now. Everything closed and money printers go brrrrrrrrrrrrr

Lockdown with some strong degree of job guarantees and business assistance, as per most countries, likely means quicker return to economic normality than the turmoil of having businesses readjust to volatile demand levels and the long term unemployement that creates.

With the right measures what might be a depression in terms of transaction falls will actually be a pause. Whereas having the virus tear through the economy would cause a real recession or depression.

You came to the wrong house fool.

And the virus is tearing through the economy.

I'd certainly argue that shops keeping their doors open is better for them by far than forced closure, and that lesser employment hours is way better than millions losing their job, and that their business levels would be more stable than you think.

Spain has now overtaken China in terms of the number of deaths because of the Coronavirus. Spain's death toll because of Coronavirus is now second behind Italy.

The following are the top 10 countries with the most deaths due to Coronavirus to date:

1- Italy                            7,503 deaths

5- France                       1,331 deaths

6- USA                            1,032 deaths

7- UK                              435 deaths

8- Netherlands             356 deaths

@Gunnersauraus so it turns out I was wrong.

The coastal wet markets in Peru do sell mostly fish products but there's one market in Iquitos that sells a wide variety of animals like monkeys and caimans.

It's worrying for my country but not the world I don't think. Our air traffic isn't anywhere near China, much less Iquitos.

New York has 45% of US total cases

From what I hear they are better at testing, but with the density and vertical living that's so common in NY they were always going to grow faster than other places.

A Madrid, Wuhan or Lombardy style outbreak would be economic hell under free market conditions that would have severe knock on effects for banking. State intervention would become necessary when an outbreak collapses the way of life.

The choice can simply be put as state control now to mitigate chaos or state response to chaos itself. Based on those mentioned outbreak areas it would be a hell of a gamble to go with the latter and such a decision should be made under the false guise that keeping surf shops lights on would better mitigate chaos.

Some European governments are state control protecting now. The US on the other hand is looking like already leaning towards state response to chaos itself in the name of the free market by ramping up unemployed benefits rather than guaranteeing jobs for a couple of months.

Can we trust the likes of China and Russia to be honest with their figures?

China probably.

Wuhan locked down a lot earlier and more efficiently than Lombardy and Madrid. They also built an entire hospital to cope with capacity issues.

If I recall correctly Wuhan locked down at under 100 deaths. Spain locked down the day they surpassed 350.

No, I don't think that we can necessarily trust countries like China, Russia, Iran and other dictatorships in terms of being transparent with the figures. I mean North Korea would be a prime example of a country that we cannot trust at all regarding the information that they give us. However, most other countries will be giving accurate and up to date information.

30k cases in NY alone :o

US death toll has surpassed 1k. Just behind Italy in terms of cases.

Just a hoax though.

My question is how locked down are they?

We are at stage 2 of a system where stage 4 is Italy level lockdown. We have 10 deaths and 2000 cases.

Stage 2 is basically all congregating shops and gatherings shut down but normal stores still open and schools still running.

America now have 70k and 1k deaths. Are major cities at that stage 4 point?

My daughter is a scientist working in NC and is working mainly from home.  However, when anything new or important crops up she has to go to the lab and has been given a permit which she must show to be allowed to travel from home to work.  Without it she would be arrested!  That's North Carolina's version of lock-down and it works!
