Tottenham make a world-record £113m profit despite the costs of a new stadium

Tottenham Hotspur made a world-record profit of £113m after tax last season.

The figure tops the £106m profit posted by Premier League rivals Liverpool earlier this year.

Yearly financial results for 2017-18 reveal Spurs' income climbed from £310m to £380m thanks in part to player sales and increased crowds from playing at Wembley Stadium.

The figures were released as the club opened a new £1bn stadium - though much of that cost has been met with loans.

Premier League matchday revenue more than doubled from £19m to £42.6m thanks to playing in front of larger crowds at Wembley while the new stadium was under construction.

Tottenham beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in their first game at the new ground.

Tottenham break world record with a £113m profit

It left the side third in the Premier League, one point in front of London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea and three points in front of Manchester United in sixth place.

The financial results show the club is still some way off competing with other top six sides financially, however.

Last season, Tottenham spent £147m on player wages, for example - almost £100m lower than Arsenal's £240m wage bill, the next lowest of the top six clubs - and about half that of Manchester United.

The annual results filed by the club also show £116m was spent on new players in the period, with the likes of Brazil international Lucas Moura and defender Serge Aurier both coming in from Paris St-Germain.

However, the club also made £84m back in player sales - defender Kyle Walker's move to Manchester City providing more than half of that.

Their income increased but the main thing that's seperating them from the other 5 clubs in the top 6 is the wages. Once their players realise that they're top players, they'll be asking for money that's nearer to what players at that level are earning.

Not sure if this is true or it's just a Twitter story but apparently the stadium isn't capable of being at full capacity for football for some reason. 59k is the "football capacity". The first 2 or 3 rows were deliberately left empty. That's the story anyway. Funny if true.

Jan Vertonghen: Tottenham defender did not suffer a concussion, neurologist rules

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen "did not suffer a concussion" during Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg defeat by Ajax.

The Belgium international, 32, collided with team-mate Toby Alderweireld and, despite being cleared to continue, soon had to be substituted.

Vertonghen was seen by a neurologist specialising in sport-related concussion on Thursday.

It was recommended he undertakes a "brief period of rehabilitation".

In a statement, Tottenham said Vertonghen "suffered an injury to his nose" which resulted in "heavy bleeding".

After being cleared by Spurs' medical staff - who followed Football Association concussion guidelines - to continue playing, he was later shown struggling to stand up.

Spurs said they had been advised this was "the result of a presyncopal episode, a near faint".

I thought this would happen at some point, Pochettino applying some pressure in terms of Spurs competing at the highest level long term. If they win the Champions Leauge then it could propel them onto a new level but will they spend to match the ambition? The timing does seem a bit odd when everyone should be on a high though.

Kieran Trippier: Tottenham defender unsure on Spurs future

Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier says he is unsure if he will stay at the club and expects to discuss his future with manager Mauricio Pochettino after his summer break.

Trippier is reportedly a target for Italian sides Napoli and Juventus, and Spain's Atletico Madrid have also been linked with the 28-year-old.

He said: "I want to stay in England but what can you do?

"I'll see what happens and what the club wants, most importantly."

Trippier, who is contracted to Spurs until 2022, made 38 appearances this season as they finished fourth in the Premier League and reached the Champions League final.

He impressed for England in their run to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia but was left out of Gareth Southgate's squad for this week's Nations League finals in Portugal.

When asked about his future, the defender said: "I don't know.

"I go home now, spend time with my family, just recover after a long, difficult season. Everybody's got a decision to make.

"Obviously this club has been very good for me over the last few years but I'll enjoy my summer, come back in pre-season and that's when I'll sit down with the manager and have a talk about my future.

"I see a lot of speculation about me not being here. I give everything, 100% every game, win lose or draw. So we'll see what happens in pre-season."

I've got mixed feelings on Trippier. I think he's obviously a good player, though he's struggled this season and he himself has admitted it - I think he's a better wingback than a fullback. And at the start of the season, I'd have put him ahead of Trent for England... but on the form of the two players, Trent's kicked on pretty massively (from an already good season last year) while Trippier's regressed.

It'd be interesting to see how he would do if he did move to Italy. I think for both clubs he's linked with and for himself personally, Juve is a better move. And I also think it'd be better for the England national team, no disrespect to Tottenham at all - especially after this season - but Juve are one of the giants of European football and the biggest club in Italy. The pressures of playing for England I think are most able to be replicated at a side like Juve, where the fans there fully expect domestic success and where they're desperate for cup wins. And he'd also get to play alongside Ronaldo for the last few years of his career.

But of course, for him to worry about his England career... he'll have to make his way back into the England side. As one of the standout performers of our World Cup campaign, I think this drop in form is just that... a drop in form. And whether he stays or goes, I suspect he'll improve and be back in the England side. Although he may find he's got more of a fight to start as Trent has grown a bit (both literally and as a player).

Looks as though Spurs are going to sign Jack Clarke from us.

Obviously a massive loss, I hope we get at least 12m for him and a sell on clause.

Anything else would be a robbery when you see the state of the market.

Tottenham sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon

Tottenham have signed France midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Ligue 1 side Lyon for a club record 60m euros (£53.8m).

The 22-year-old, who had spells at Guingamp and Amiens before a switch to Lyon in 2017, has signed a deal until 2025.

He helped Lyon to finish third the French top-flight last season and twice played against Manchester City in Champions League group games.

Ndombele has also made six appearances for the France national team.
