Round 11 Answers

1. Name the German club which had to change hotels during their winter break training camp, after they realised that the hotel was also hosting a Russian beauty contest with over 400 participants at the same time, and the club management were concerned that the players would not be able to focus on football? Additional point for naming the country where it happened. (2 pts.)
MSV Duisburg in Turkey.

2. Which former German footballer could have become a professional skier but chose a career in football over skiing? (1 pt)
Bastian Schweinsteiger. Growing up he trained and travelled with top German skier Felix Neureuther, and could have chosen a career in skiing.

3. Name a former Bundesliga player who got sent off for pulling down opponent's (also a former Bundesliga player) shorts during a World Cup Qualifying match? Bonus point for naming the other player, too (2 pts)
Dzeko against Sokratis. Here's the video:

4. During a Bundesliga match in the 70s, one team started the second half and played for 5 minutes without their goalkeeper because they forgot him in the dressing room during the halftime break and nobody noticed it. Which club was that and what was the name of the goalkeeper? Additional point for also naming the club they were playing against. (3 pts)
Schalke against Bochum in 1974. Norbert Nigbur (Schalke's goalkeeper) picked up a knock right before the half time break, went to massage room to put some ice on it and asked one of the staff to tell him when the team was going back on the pitch. Well, they obviously forgot to, and he realised that the second half has started without him. Funnily enough, nobody noticed, and Bochum didn't have a single shot on goal anyway. He even had to convince the police that he's the goalkeeper before they let thim back on the pitch xD

5. Who was the first player in the history of the Bundesliga to be fined and banned for diving? (1 pt)
Andi Möller after his awful dive to win a penalty (and the league title) in BVB match against KSC in 1995. He got fined and banned for 2 league matches.

6. Name a former Bundesliga and German NT player who has a nickname based on an animal character from a Pixar animated movie. Extra point for correctly naming the character as well. (2 pts)
Mesut Özil, Nemo 👀

7. Name a former Bundesliga managed who made his players walk barefoot over broken glass as a mental exercise? What was the club he was managing at the time? (2 pts)
Christoph Daum, Leverkusen

8. What is the record for the longest stoppage time in an official match in German football (how many minutes)? (1 pt)
28 min in a Bezirksliga match between Dostlukspor Bottrop and BW-Wesel in 2007, all because of time wasting by both teams. The referee said that the fans paid to see 90 minutes of football, and that's what they should get. Legend.
Two of you are getting 1 point here for the closest guesses - Faithcore with 27 min and Khan of TF365 with 29 min!

9. Name a former Bundesliga and German NT player who is a motorsports fan, has recently test-driven a race car on the Nürburgring and is considering becoming a racing driver after his football career. (1 pt)
Lukas Podolski

10. Name a former German player who used to live in squats, worked in kindergarten for disabled children, and took a 6 month break from professional football in order to travel to Nicaragua to volunteer in development projects. (1 pt)
Volker Ippig, when he was playing for St. Pauli in 1986-1992. He is also working in the docks in Hamburg now as a cargo lasher. A proper character, highly recommend reading his story...

Looked for it out of curiosity, and it seems Volker Ippig wasn't famous enough to justify any English sources about his story.:( Which is a shame as I can only echo @nudge statement that he was a very interesting character, by the way he was one of the reasons, if not the main one, St. Pauli changed their image from a club attracting prostititutes and their pimps to the left-leaning reputation they have nowadays.

It's a shame indeed :( I found this short article, only scratches the surface, but at least it's something: https://insunandshadow.com/2011/08/10/political-footballers-xi-volker-ippig/
