What Might Happen to Football When Messi & Ronaldo Retire?

Over the last 10 years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have set standards as to how football greatness is measured.

Both superstars have amassed legions of fans between the most arguing who among the two is better.

But what do you might happen if both of them will retire in Football?

What might happen to football, when both retire?

Nothing. Football was alive and kicking before both of them were even born and it probably will still be , when those two players have retired, if not this will have other reasons than their retirement.

The only change I can see, some people (especially in Asia) might actually recognize football is a team sport.

Nothing will happen to football at all. There will be new 'greats' emerge. Just like when players have retired in the past, new ones are idolised by the media

Nothing really, Pelé, Eusébio, Best and other greats in their time were replaced by others the same as Messi & Ronaldo will be, as 'Life goes On' so does footballers and other great athletes past & present.

We are essentially talking about two players who have set an unprecedented standard for more than 10 years straight. 
 

The closest player right now imo that comes close to them in terms of ability is Bernardo Silva, yet his output isn’t anywhere near them.

I think the Messi Ronaldo retirement pre Qatar wc will be remembered as the end of a golden era of football stemming back to 1998, but not just because of those two. Rather it's been the era of football going global in the way basketball did in the 80s and 90s.

There will be a hangover, like the NBA post Jordan.

There just isn’t a player like either of them and won’t be for a while, Ronaldo is a freakishly good goal scorer and Messi is just freakishly good at everything in an attacking sense...you’re more likely to see a player replicate what Ronaldo has done than Messi simply because Messi doesn’t just score goals at an unprecedented level, his passing, crossing, dribbling...as long as his body/drive lasts he could easily play as a centre mid well into his 40s imo

This. Closest player to Messi is perhaps B.Silva, and his output is maybe10% of Messi’s.
 

Bernardo Silva is also imo Portugal’s most influential player, so you can see the standard that’s been set by Messi.
