@Spike let me put it to you this way

Ronaldo 3-4 years ago was arguably the best player in the world.

Now, how can you rank him above the likes of Neymar, Messi who are geniuses on the ball or Kroos and Modric who are all around game changers.

Ronaldo has nothing that matches them other than good finishing. Before he was a great all around player, now he is limited. Thus, for me he is finished. Don't let those 44 goals mask you. Each to their own but its not that my reality is distorted, I just don't think he's one of the 5 best anymore.

I would like to consume whatever you are consuming because you are having a hell of a trip.

It amazes me how much people like shit on Ronaldo. No he isn't the extremely dynamic best player in the world he used to be, but last time I checked he was brought in to score goals.... a man who can still put up 44 goals in a season is still prettttyyy much top notch.

A man who has just smashed 44 goals in and 15 in the best club competition in the world is nowhere near finished.

Of course he is not as dynamic as he once was, but he has adapted his play style and is still unbelievably effective. Still easily one of the best two players in the world.

You obviously haven't much Madrid much then and just looked at the stats. Scoring goals doesn't automatically make you one of the 2 best in the world.

This might be a daft comparison but German Carty was one of the worst forwards I've ever seen and he led Cienciano to continental cup glory. They have never won the league in their country and the country never won a continental competition. That doesn't mean he was one of the best players in South American club level, not even close.

If used right, a limited forward can score goals, but effectiveness means fuck all if you are useless on the ball. That to me doesn't represent one of the best in the world. Neymar for me is heads and shoulders over Ronaldo these days.

Stats mean fuck all when before he could create chances by himself, and now he relies on others to create the chances for him. I'm not saying he's a bad player, I am saying he is finished, as he's just too inconsistent these days and again needs to really rely on chances made by his teammates on the contrary to before.

As opposed to who? Van Basten? van Nistelrooy? Shevchenko? They aren't exactly known for 'creating their own chances*' are they? There is nothing wrong with being a poacher, it's a role in the game as legitimate as any other. It isn't as if he stands on the penalty spot and waits for people to pass to him, he still has amazing movement, anticipation, and timing. Any great player has to have those traits to score goals.

*what does that even mean? Dribbling through the team and scoring a solo goal? Stupid platitude that I have never seen anyone define

Finished players also tend not to have such marketing power that a world class team feels compelled to keep them and supply them with bucketload of chances.

Its a new, bizarre, commercialised world and Ronaldo is a symbol of it.

What elite players don't get bucketloads of chances? Aguero, Lewandowski, Higuian, Dybala, Griezmann do, don't they? People are holding Ronaldo up to a standard that he never played at. Why people even bother with comparing anyone to Messi, I will never know. It's like comparing an F1 to a wooden wagon.

If you are a poacher, you are not one of the best in the world in my opinion. I have seen some pretty shocking forwards that were incredibly effective. Doesn't mean they were good.

Again, Ronaldo in his prime was one of the best players to ever play the game, but this isn't one of them. Just my own point of view.

Maradona on the other hand, was an effective player and unfamothable on the ball. I want to say Messi as well, but he has been less effective in recent years, although he still has a lot to show for him.

Finished means he is done. His career is over, there is nothing left to play for. Maradona is finished because he is over 50 and obese. You don't even understand the word you are using, mate! I don't think he is the best in the world, I think he never was but I'm arguing against the fact he is 'finished' because finished he isn't. He is declining but that is a different word.

finished

adjective
  1. ended or completed.
  2. completed or perfected in all details, as a product:to pack and ship finished items.
  3. polished to the highest degree of excellence:

Which of those applies to Ronaldo?

Coming from the person that thinks "world class" means the best in the world, and uses the world "elite" for one of the best.

We have different definitions. Ronaldo was one of my favourite players to watch in the old days. These days I don't feel the same joy, because he does fuck all within 90 minutes besides a goal out of nowhere.

Personally I don't think it's v controversial to consider Modric rn a better player than Ronaldo.

Id rather have Modric and an average forward than an average midfielder and Ronaldo.

It's a different skill set. There is more to the sport than passing and dribbling. If that were the case there are blokes on the street that dribble better than Messi but have no sense of the sport. If a poacher can't be the best, then a CB can't, a GK can't, and fullback may as well not be either. You're limiting the sport and have an elitist sense on what is considered 'good'.

If perfecting a particular skillset isn't impressive to you, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm gutted for Karius. He's fucked it big style but he doesn't deserve shot out into space. He's been largely great in the last few months. He just needs experience to teach him and build his confidence.

I don't agree. For too long we've continued to excuse this sort of occasional disastrous form with Mignolet. Karius looked shaky early on with us. He fucked it today.... I would never have him start a make cup final for us again and be looking for a first team keeper in the summer... that said i actually do like the lad and would wish him a long as successful career as our number 2.

No way. Neymar slows the pace, over the 90 min loses possession many times with silly dribbles. Cristiano may not be the player he was, but he still scores a lot. And in the end of the day, putting the ball on the net and not Youtube highlights is what win you games.

There's dribbling, shooting, passing, movement, first touch, positioning off the ball...

What the fuck? "world class' isn't defined, it's an arbitrary label made up by sports fans,  but the word 'finished' defined by several dictionaries you  gronk. xD

Mate, its all my opinion. And I often have lived by it.

For me, you are one of the best in the world with effectiveness and technique. The likes of Martin Palermo and Inzaghi were crap but yet scored loads of goals. I'm not saying Ronaldo is one of them, but that's why I don't tend to highly rate poachers. Effectiveness and footballing ability are 2 skillsets and to be in the top 5 you need to have both (depending on the position of course)

It's controversial to think Ronaldo is finished. He's one of the best players in the world, only bettered by Messi and even that's debatable these days.

There’s some proper wet wipes in the World. A quick search of Karius’ name on Twitter brings up some frankly disgusting and pretty disturbing stuff from some pretty insignificant and horrible people.

The lads’ biggest day of his career, potentially his life, up to this point and he’s being ridiculed and laughed at for two mistakes. Nobody wants to make mistakes in life, but everybody does. Especially at work. We’re all guilty of it.

It wasn’t pleasent viewing watching Karius in floods of tears apologising for his performance. It wasn’t pleasant either that none of his teammates went over to him, just John Achteberg.

I hope Karius recovers from this and is supported by the club and the PFA. It cannot be easy being him for the next few months.

And Ronaldo is great at all the bold! I don't understand this argument, I"m not even saying Ronaldo is the best, or even amongst the best, I'm just saying he isn't 'finished'. Yeah, I agree with you earlier, I'd take Modric over Ronaldo but that doesn't mean Ronaldo is chopped liver. They fulfill different roles, with different expectations. Does Modric offer more than Ronaldo? Yeah that is true but it doesn't negate Ronaldo's ability either.

Nothing I have said has been controversial at all xD the likes of Chaay and Danny haven't watched a second of Real Madrid this season before tonight and are being masked by the amount of goals Ronaldo scored this season.

He's not one of the top 5 this season, but one of the 10 best of all time in his prime.

It made my fucking blood boil that no Liverpool player came to console him afterwards. Real Madrid players did.

Have a fucking word with yourself, Jordan Henderson. You're club proudly chants 'You Will Never Walk Alone' and you've left your GK in a state being consoled by Gareth Bale.
