I've got a feeling that the government is listening a lot more to behavioural psych experts about how to manage the public, than to medical experts about how to manage the virus.4 points

Why is it so tiresome to live in a country governed by a dangerous demagogue? Earlier this morning, Eduardo Bolsonaro, the president's son, told several media outlets that the president had tested positive. The press reported it. One hour later, president Bolsonaro announced he had tested negative and that the press was lying all along and spreading rumours about him, despite the fact those rumours were started by the president entourage. He does that ALL the time in order to discredit the free press.3 points

I'd say they have been forced to, as opposed to taking responsibility. Responsibility would be calling off the fixtures in line with rest of Europe as opposed to letting events go ahead.3 points

Yes; they already closed all 16 temporary makeshift hospitals in Wuhan. Businesses and public transportation start resuming slowly.2 points

State of alarm declared here. All bars and establishments will be closed in Madrid from tomorrow except supermarkets and pharmacies. I imagine the rest of the country will follow suit.2 points

As a brazilian journalist said earlier today, the coronavirus test result might be the first positive thing to happen in more than one year of Bolsonaro administration.2 points

The theme of Western governments being like "let's not get carried away, this isn't necessary yet" turning into "okay actually we definitely need to do that" in the space of about 24 hours continues. I still think we should jump forward a few steps instead of waiting for things to get as bad as Italy and Spain before we put into place the same measures as Italy and Spain.1 point

They also sent a few doctors who managed the oubreak in Wuhan as well as 30 tonnes of medical equipment and supplies to Italy too.1 point

Much worse He regularly narrates me the whole detailed plot of pretty much every series he follows and gives regular updates on the new episodes. Have to admire his dedication. Even has a cool notebook where he keeps notes on his progress watching every show and what not He's a bloody pro I tell you; much better at streaming/downloading/finding stuff online at 78 years of age than most of the people in their 30s1 point

Sabrina is so cheesy and I think they proper mugged Nick’s character off (won’t say more cos I’m not sure what you’ve seen) but me and the missus have binged it completely. Waiting for Part 4 now Got 5 minutes into The Boys and Jesus Christ that’s a start to a show1 point

Sabrina on Netflix is great. The Mrs watches shite like Gossip Girl as well. We’ve got Prime as well and The Boys is arguably one of the best TV programmes I’ve ever watched.1 point

Don't worry. I'm watching football highlights for the umpteenth time. Ah well. Chess online tomorrow.1 point

Yeah I feel fine to be honest, even though I recently shook hands, kissed cheeks, attended an event of 80,000+ people, travelled through an airport, etc in a country that started to have a serious outbreak while out there. I might even get tested to be sure? After all, the reason it's in Spain is because of people who had gone there from Italy during the outbreak. Most cases were of people who were in Italy just as the outbreak started and then weren't diagnosed with the virus until over a week after actually being in Spain. I haven't been at work yesterday or today. My excuse is that I want to see if I come out with any symptoms, but in reality, I just couldn't be arsed going. It's only 2 days missed work, I can make it up in the next few weekends if I need to. Madrid has well over 2,000 now But Catalunya itself has 500+ now as well. I went there just at the right time as everything was as normal. Well, it could technically turn out being just at the wrong time if I have contracted it. La Sagrada Familia is closed and when you saw it on RTVE, the area around it looked quiet and you don't see that as it's usually full of people. It'd be difficult to buy it though as nobody would want to come near me1 point

I thought that was the whole anti-EU arguement, but who knows anymore. People will moan when they "meddle" in affairs that are unique to each country, and moan even more when they don't.1 point

This whole coronavirus has certainly given me ample time to study, play chess online, and even watch Chess online.1 point

That's very Fujimori-like. Then again, Brazil and Peru both have similar corruption issues. No shocker.1 point

I think a main factor, rather than just killing a lot of boomers, is the fact that it will illustrate to people of all ages that there are many situations in life where acting selfishly will backfire, and that we need the capacity to enact strong collective measures for the public good.1 point

So Zandvoort could be the season opener now. Nice. Also I'm glad I didn't buy the flight and tickets to the Vietnam GP1 point

Things are starting to go down in Holland, with restrictions on events of more than 100 people, urging people to work from home when they can, and to avoid contact with the elderly and other vulnerable groups. Curiously, unlike France and Belgium they haven't yet closed the schools as they fear it would put too much pressure on parents who cannot work from home, against too little benefit as children seem largely unaffected by it. The latter seems a bit odd to me as children themselves may not be affected much, but from what I understand they can still easily spread the disease to more vulnerable groups. In any case, I expect them to carry it over the weekend and close the schools by Monday. On another note, I have a friend who lives in Beijing and he says things are relatively good there now. The virus seems to be on the retreat again, and he said he made it through the lockdown just fine. He also said all the reports in Western media about 'China imprisoning its own population' made him laugh, as you can easily still move about the city. There are guards around, but they mainly just sleep by open gates and you only wake them up when you need his help because you lost your keys.1 point

Anyone know how Peru and Latin America are handling this whole situation? Not heard much about it from there and surprised @Inti Brian hasn't said anything?!1 point

South Korea have nearly tested more people per day than the US has in its entirety, and from what I see they are really lagging behind understanding where the true numbers are at, which I think stems from them wanting to keep the numbers low early on in line with Trump's desire not to hear bad news.1 point

Yep. It´d be ironic if Bolsonaro, who admires and looks up to Trump, ends up being responsible for Trump contracting coronavirus. By the way, during that meeting Bolsonaro said corona was a fantasy.1 point
