As you get older, you realise your time is more precious. The people in your life that don't add any value to that time will quickly disappear. It's natural and normal.4 points

Bad day at work?... Anyway, to add to your list of observations: - in terms of advancing in your professional career, networking and interpersonal relationships are by far more important than actual skills and knowledge. Being the best at your job is great and has its advantages as well, but it's not the road to promotion. - staying neutral in office politics, not taking sides, and being good at keeping "secrets" puts you in a very good position, as everyone tends to confide in you and thus you always have plenty of information you can eventually use for your own advantage. - senior management in big companies don't know jack shit. -2 points

My people skills in person are second to none. But I feel that being polite in nature can also work against you. I always used to get to work 45 minutes prior to when my shift started. I could do a few of the tedious jobs I hated prior to starting. However, this became difficult as the twats of managers would ask me to do other things even so my shift hadn't yet started. The club mentality. That's how I felt it was with many of the female managers and many of the women over 50. They'd grown up working together, some from as young as 16. Left school and went straight to the bank. They could get away with doing fuck-all, it was like an over 50's dumb Maggie Smith club.1 point

This is a good point, a case of who you know? But being honest I'd rather get a job for having the ability opposed to who I know. In the office there were 10 of us who were a tight knit bunch. But saying that, there were times when some of the 10 would bitch about another. Correct about senior managers. It makes you think how did they get so high up?1 point

My Colombian mate said she hates the whole Pablo Escobar hype in general and that she hates how most foreigners associate her country with drugs, cartels and prostitution. It can actually be a very taboo subject to be honest and drugs are nowhere near as popular among Colombians as they are in the USA and here in Europe, where it's very common for people to take drugs. But she also said that the "real" series about Pablo Escobar for Colombians is El patrón del mar. The lead actor in Narcos doesn't have a very natural sounding accent. In the book I read about the Medellin cartel, the fella who wrote the book was part of that Cartel and even he says in the book that El Patrón del mar is "closer to the truth" while Narcos is "aload of nonsense with Pablo speaking in a Portuguese accent". I personally like both but do prefer the grittiness of el patrón del mar, with it being from Colombia itself. By the way, Sky Rojo is a brilliant series. I binged the whole of season 2 at the weekend.1 point

I've been close mates with this lad who lives near me for years. I've helped him through the thick and thin. I'm in a bit of a tricky situation at the moment financially, and he's become the most arrogant prick since I asked him for help. It's caused me to re-evaluate a lot of my friendships. I think I'm at that age now where I can't be letting deadwood impact my life: I need to whittle down on one-sided friendships.1 point

Isn’t that basically US Middle East policy in a nutshell? Make stupid decisions that turn large swathes of the local population against you & then acting surprised and angry when the situation goes the exact opposite of how the US would like it to go. It’s all the more bizarre with Afghanistan - they could have learned what not to do from the Soviet invasion… and had a unique role in the initial formation of the Taliban. You wouldn’t think they’d be so… ignorant about how they went about their invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. Yet here we are. I think China’s gonna come in now and throw money at the Taliban saying “we don’t care what you do to Afghans in Afghanistan, but we want to build and have control over Afghan infrastructure and we want exclusive mining rights” - and it’ll probably be a more effective strategy than America’s more expensive 20 year war. But any situation I think is bad for Afghans generally, so that’s pretty shit for them1 point

As part of my Zoo Management qualifications we had to watch some pretty fucked up shit, breaks your heart. Agree with @nudge too, on the whole zoos are fantastic and the pros very much outweigh the cons, but there are some animals where an exhibit no matter how large or enriched will never be enough.1 point

Just an update and thanks for all the well wishes. I did a lateral flow test when I started not to feel too good over a week ago. When the results turned out to be positive I was told to take a PCR test by the NHS to confirm that I was positive. Indeed after I took the PCR test, I tested positive. I had real difficulty breathing when I moved about too much and I also had a cough. I was told to self-isolate until the 5th of August by the NHS. Luckily I am feeling much better now. I am not getting out of breath anymore when I move about and I am hardly coughing. I guess my immune system has really battled hard over the past week to get me better. It was the unknown that was the most worrying part initially. As I was just told to self isolate, without any other advice as to what I could expect. I'll be getting the vaccine on the 6th of August, as I don't want a recurrence of this. I have to say that I am relieved that I am feeling much better now.1 point

Dublin pretty much takes care of itself. Just do the tour and it'll take you around all the points that you'll most likely want to visit anyway. Trinity college which you've probably seen on the internet a million times. Phoenix park where Dublin Zoo is which is a very good Zoo too. Guinness storehouse. Jameson destillery. Dublin Castle Then you've got the Temple Bar area where all the classic irish bars are at.1 point

Oh they definitely have more than one contingency plan, haha. In this case, the Crew Dragon and Soyuz we're both ready to evacuate the astronauts/cosmonauts, if needed. And I agree, as you said, anything can happen. Space is always a dangerous place for a person to be, regardless of all the advancement and progress.1 point

I'm a big fan myself. I think Rapid Wien did a great job by developing him, not rushing him and not hyping him up too much. He joined them when he was 10 years old I think, and then he made all the way from their youth setups to the first team, where they slowly integrated him into the squad and let him adapt to grown-up football with no pressure and no huge expectations. Now he gets to make the next step, develop further and learn from better teammates. Hope he can impress during the actual season and Barca will activate the clause to buy him. For 10million, he's surely a steal. Just hope Rapid get some sort of sell on clause into it, as well.1 point

I have a question for the Spanish speaking members who've watched Narcos Colombia. Now it's regarding the lead actor who played Pablo Escobar. When I watched it, not being a Spanish speaker I only read the subtitles. But people from Colombia were complaining about the lead actor. They were saying that he was a Brazilian who learnt Spanish not long before carrying out the role. They claimed he never had the accent of somebody from Medellin in Colombia. Did any of you Spanish speakers notice anything about the way he spoke Spanish?1 point

With so much money to spend again and a small Army to sell off, the rumours are filling up the Chelsea airwaves with new breaking news each day. One wonders how many will be taken in by the bullshit and i'm amazed Giroud contract extention as kept quite for so long. Whatever happens it's nice to have the buzz of being Euro champs again.1 point

I'm currently jobless but my last role was marked as a "Customer Service Adviser" when in actuality the role was far more complex, however the pay didn't show that. My daily role involved route planning for Service Engineers, acting as a form of complaints team for both customers and Service Engineers, carrying out logistical analysis, analysing scheduled adherence reports, training new staff, training colleagues from other sites. I think my job title should have been "underpaid and overused" but I did enjoy keeping myself busy. The only reason I stuck it out was because I was going travelling.1 point

been dragged in to a colleague's dispute with her boss who treats her like a child compared to other members in their team. I get on with both of them so this is difficult especially when she's telling me he's a fucking cunt, prick and other names . Have tried to keep it balanced in my advice without trying to sound like I'm not listening to her and not bad-mouthing him as well.1 point

I work at fucking Starbucks so I have no real complaints. The wifey on the other hand could fill this entire forum till the servers exploded with nonsense from her occupation. Fuck me, imagine having the most casual, friendliest and efficient workplaces in the world only to have it do an 180' and become a literal joke of bureaucracy and level after level of management.1 point

I used to experience people mistaking my kindness for weakness but even being in this job has built up a resilience to those that try and take advantage of it. I've become more confident as a result of being in this job too. I predominantly deal with the stereotypical housing benefit families (ugh!) and council/social housing estate demographics - you have to be tough to deal with them as they do not like being told what to do i.e. pay their rent and if they're in arrears they don't like being told that either haha. I've been working in this role since November 2014. So glad I moved out of finance for this!1 point
