I think the sheer impact on people's bills and living standards has become so pronounced now that they won't be so easily seduced by those headline figures of GDP and such.

As an economics student at A Level and undergraduate it has always frustrated me how people assess political parties on how they handle "the economy". Obviously you want GDP to be increasing, but if the majority of the population isn't feeling the benefit of it in their day to day lives then what good is it? The state of things at the moment though, I don't think many people will be swayed by "GDP this" and "reduced national debt" that or any of those headline figures if their energy bills and mortgages are still through the roof.

We are currently in the 2008-10 cycle all over again. A global crisis with local nuance, 2 years out of an election. Brown was able to go into the election with the topline figures improving but the reputational damage of being at the wheel was too much. The same should likely be the case here.

Our two party state seems to only change hands at a major economic impasse. Could be a coincidence but likely not.

A decade of Labour should be coming.

An election now might jeopardise that, whilst Labour would win, inflation, currency value and interest rates are likely going to cause further negative headlines in the coming months regardless of what any government does or does not do. Let that fall at the Tories feet to increase liklihood of a long term Labour government.

Why does nobody ever ask them who's going to do the (often essential) minimum wage jobs if their expectation is for everyone to just move into the careers that pay better?

About 6-8 years ago our conservative treasurer said something along the lines of "if young people can't afford houses these days it's only because they eat too much avocado on toast"

Well luckily you're in a free trade union that allows foreign labor access to your country to.... wait a minute.

Just get a new job guys.

🤦‍♂️

This is the worst kind of conservative. I'm not saying that they are all like that. But there are some. I get really annoyed by people like this. I've worked hard since I was 16 but a series of mental health issues have stopped me from being able to earn a good salary. Then some idiot like that comes out and says that.

We've had similar comments about people with Netflix in this country. Because of course people cant afford mortgages because they spend £60 a year on tv 🤦‍♂️

I'm not one of those back in the good old days kind of person but it seems as if this country has got worse and worse since brexit. And it is linked into that. We had an election which the conservatives won heavily because people wanted it sorted. We have rising prices because of it.

I dont know how much of it is linked to it @nudge help. But  other countries have had 20% rises in energy bills where as in britian it is 200%.

According to fact checker uk has price rise are not likked to Brexit

Oh well, that's just my thoughts, not into politics anyway, they all are a bunch of money-grabbing bastards that own million-pound houses and cars that cost a bomb and fly away on holidays at the expense of the taxpayer. :coffee:

You can like them, support them, agree with them etc. But I'd never really trust any politician.

I wonder how "conservative" the Tories really are, none of the policies really espoused the betterment of the English people, customs, culture and seemed to be another deepfake on what conservatism really is.   if anything it is just a lesser version of socialist democracy that carries all the same tropes as the very left labour, but hey diversity is our strength is a hill many go to die on.

Well I trust them more than the other politicians. I don't think it is true that you can't trust any politicians though. I'm sure there are some politicians out there who genuinely care about the world and want to make it better. I think when they vote for things that don't benefit them that is a sign they really care.
