Dele Alli?
Lucas Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 1. Spurs played well. Really well. For me, they deserved to win. Don't think they can be unhappy with their performance at all. Anyone else today and they would have won I think. They were unfortunate that they came up against a Chelsea side who defended really well as a unit and refused to buckle under periods of pressure. Credit to Chelsea because at times, their midfield three were getting overrun and looked tired. But they dug in and showed a Champion mentality. And that was what won Chelsea a lot of games last season. Resilience. 2. Lot's of blame for Lloris for the winner and ok, he should have saved it. But Wanyama should take just as much a portion of the blame, if not more. He criminally gave the ball away as soon as Lloris threw the ball to him in a dangerous area of the pitch and then didn't track Alonso's run. And to put the cherry on the cake, he tried to claim offside Laughable from Wanyama and had he not done that, Alonso would never have been in the clear to pop a shot off. 3. Erikson was class. The balls he played into that Chelsea box today were unreal and he constantly probed the Chelsea defence. Best player on the pitch for me today and didn't deserve to be on the losing side. That ball he played in the first half into the penalty area that evaded everyone was unreal.
True Blue Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 To be honest after the first half, and the last 15 minutes i wasn't sure how we went on half time with a lead. Apart from the Alonso goal we had a good chance early on with Morata coming close with a header. In the second we were more composed and Tottenham remained on their 6 shots on goal from the first half. Kane was completely shut down in the second half, and Spurs needed Michy to help them out. Truth to be told overall this was a well fought win, but Spurs did well today, pressed hard and a point would also be fair. Major boost for us after a shit opening day, just three behind the top and perhaps the hardest away game out of our way. Some of the players could return for Everton and we could be back to our normal formation. Conte had a plan from minute one and i think he clearly won the tactical game.
Cicero Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 What needs to be mentioned is how our players respond after a defeat. Arsenal last year, went on to win 13 in a row. Spurs last year, went on to get a crucial draw at Anfield. Lost to Palace at home and United, went on to beat Spurs in the semi final as well as beating Everton at Goodison. No way would we have won this game if it were 2015/16. That was pure filth from Alonso and a nearly perfect performance. Continuing to prove his doubters wrong, myself included. Luiz yet again showing why his presence has been missed. Always a big game player and leader on the pitch, and it could be said that we could have lost that game had Cesc been in there instead of him. Thought Kante had a below par game for his standards and Bakayoko looked blatantly unfit, so it was a good choice to have Luiz in there as well. Before the game Conte knew we were never going to outplay Spurs in the middle of the pitch. Luiz, Alonso, and Christensen had great games. Courtois definite improvement off last game. Major boost for the players and Conte got it spot on again against Spurs. Unlike Mourinho, the players look to be fully behind Conte, and a big reason for that is his personality and character. Cannot wait to see this team with Bakayoko fully fit with Hazard and Pedro back. Spurs played well, but to say they deserved to win is laughable. Also find it laughable how this genuinely still gets brought up. Unless there is major controversy, you deserve fuck all if you can't outscore your opponent. The sheer purpose of the game.

The Artful Dodger Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Deserve to win is probably the wrong way of putting it, but I don't think Spurs have too much to be concerned about in the way they played. They'll be fine this season, should definitely be top 4 and can definitely compete for the title again

We'll set up exactly how we did last season at your place but we don't have someone with Lukaku's ability to score from nothing. Martina is going to get destroyed.
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted August 21, 2017 Subscriber Posted August 21, 2017 If Martina plays that alone could turn what I expect to be a 2-0 or 2-1 sort of loss into something ugly. Personally if Sandro is still injured I'd play five at the back with Holgate on the right, Mirallas and Lookman on the wings to counter but that's very negative and won't happen.
Cicero Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Quote The Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots all have as many wins at the new Wembley as Spurs do.

Agreed on all bar Kante, think he was great. Bakayoko had an okay game, obviously rushed and a debut game Spurs away isn't ideal. Think he will be a very good player for us. Christensen had a tough game, all the balls went through him and he was under heavy fire on the left. In the second Rusiger was left and Christensen was in the middle with heavy cover from Luiz and done better. Rudiger had a decent debut apart from the yellow he was okay. Complete new back three was obvious we would struggle. Overall a tactical masterpiece by Conte. With Hazard back, Bakayoko fully fit and perhaps with a couple of new signings we will look great.

I thought Christensen was exceptional. Started off nervy but grew into the game. God willing Conte continues him and benches Cahill and make Dave captain. Wonderful to see some sort of youth player make it here. Only criticism on Kante was that Kane was getting past him quite easily at times. Not like Kante at all.
True Blue Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Christensen did well overall, but at some points he was the weak link, i was delighted with Kante not sure why both you and Luke aren't happy

He's that good.

True but i felt he was played out of position, being pushed on the wing. I always rate him since he runs his socks off and he has had some great interceptions.
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted August 21, 2017 Subscriber Posted August 21, 2017 Our line-up - Pickford - Holgate Keane Jagielka Williams Baines - Gueye Schneiderlin Davies - Rooney Calvert-Lewin I'm fine with a negative line-up but for Christ's sake we can't play one attacking player with some pace? We won't have a shot on target until substitutions in the 70th minute.
Redcanuck Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Was about to say the same about Everton line up. 5 defenders, defensive midfielders, you can't see where the goals are from that line up. But like you say, keep it close for 70 minutes and bring on your attackers.
