Question of the day. How far down the pyramid of English football do you have to go to get a league with all the clubs owned by British?

The obscene money in the premier league is nothing new. Would United have had a 20 year period of dominance had the TV money for league winners not been outrageous? Who knows but probably not.

Chelsea were weird because aside from being incredibly wealthy compared to competitors, the owner had close ties to a dictatorship. With City and Newcastle the ties to the dictatorship are so close you can’t actually separate them from the dictator - and both of them are playing a leading role in the genocide in Yemen.

I don’t think it’s that strange that dictators and war involved in British football gives people bad vibes.

the Athletic already did an article two years ago on the notion of clean money in European football and Liverpool like all elite clubs are entrenched in money that derives from Russia, UAE and China in one form or another.

I don't think Newcastle United actively purports to represent a war torn country that has been in civil war since well before the current Saudi crown Prince was ever born.

geopolitical grandstanding does nothing for me, Liverpool one of the chief proponents in the super league now signed a new agreement with other elite clubs to benefit from new champions league proposals as a form of ensuring the haves have more.   John Henry is big on it like he is in taking UAE and China deals to Boston Red Sox.   this new money derives from the UAE and by extension Russia and China.

the harder thing is to actually prove clean money in sport.

anywho the Saudis are not involved in direct handling but only assist in helping the club reach its goals.  the Saudis want to grow football in the middle East and unlike the UAE which is dead to football, Saudi Arabia and Iran have long been Fifa nations.

Boehly-Wyss consortium still in talks with Abramovich, while other parties rule themselves out one-by-one. Chelsea operating on a 'business as usual' basis with Marina Granovskaia still in charge and staff emails being sent out to carry on: https://t.co/ylnZ0sTalM #CFC

You are into non league football anyway.  Even League Two has two or three foreign owners

What is this government doing allowing these Putin puppets to disinvest and get out with all their money.

You seem surprised... This is the current government under Johnson that has received at least 2Mill in donations since 2019 from Russian sources and who's money he refuses to give up for the greater Ukrainian cause... It must be harder everyday for him to heave his big fat sweaty body up on that high horse of his and start pointing fingers when all this 'dirty' Russian money was flooding in and was welcomed unchecked with open arms... bit late now to be trying to take the moral high ground especially as it would be a long way to climb up starting from the gutter...

Expect rather it is the shady side of Britain's less obvious banking industry that has dipped its toes into this murky pool.

Of course if it is all seized will that create a wider liquidity issue?

As some analyst on the telebox said the amount the Tories receive isn't worth the cost to them of not doing enough about Putin's pals.

Isn't there a high court case right now against an author who has claimed Putin gave the approval for Abramovich buying Chelsea? As he supposedly does for all big purchases those he made rich with stolen money make.

This is an important moment to send a warning message to the dirty money from Saudi Arabia and China by coming down hard on Russia. If we fail here what was the point of our engagement strategies?

Classy as always.

Fair play to Tuchel for doing so. Weird from Chelsea fans, not even in a 'read the room' sense. But good of Tuchel to call them out for it.

Ricketts the family that owns the Chicago Cubs are looking at Chelsea. They are the absolute worst, they are the most anti-fan owners I've seen in a long time. I hate them, I hate them, I hate them, they are the reason why I don't like the Cubs anymore, they pulled their Cubs off the national television to start their own expensive sports network, they commercialised Wrigleyville into a lil' Rickettstown, and are huge sponsors for Trump and the Republican party.

Apparently the star players that won the Cubs a championship were too expensive but they can afford Chelsea... fuck off.

Abramovich sanctioned. Chelsea not allowed to sell tickets. Only season ticket holders allowed to continue to attend matches.

Can't help but think that particular ticket decision is in part down to those fans who sang his name during the support for Ukraine.

Though Chelsea are de facto owned by Putin and the Russian state. Abramovich has to have all major purchases sanctioned by Putin and he did sanction the takeover of Chelsea as a means to promote Russian business ownership in the UK according to Catherine Belton.

Seems a bit harsh on Chelsea fans to be barred from football matches if my understanding that that is the case isn't wide of the mark.

I'm less sceptical than some about some of these sanctions because I believe any source of pressure on the Russian government that might help reduce the consequences of what they're doing sooner and more effectively. However, I don't know why not selling tickets to Chelsea fans are a part of these sanctions. If they want to punish Abramovich for his links to Putin or try and drive a wedge between them, I mean he's already basically been forced to give up the football club. Why punish the fans as well? I get that they don't want to allow people to put more money in his pocket until he sells the club, but surely they can just seize the profits and make sure the proceeds go to charities affiliated to Chelsea or something.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ticket decision is reversed. It looks like your classic public servant fuck up.

Right to sanction Abramovich, it was ridiculous that he could have just sold the club for £3bn and fucked off with that money.

A sanction implies something that can be lifted. At some point we might get beyond the point of return on that the way things are going, then compulsory purchase orders and confiscation would be required to rid the South East of Putin puppets.

Let's image Ukraine is occupied by Russia, in part or full. How then can sanctions be lifted at all for years? What then for Chelsea?

Sounds like sponsors are now looking at how to jump ship and see if they can end contracts early. Could Chelsea Football Club collapse? What's the Premier League going to do?

Always the fans that suffer somehow isn't it.

For every dickhead new breed of Chelsea fan, there will be blokes going since the 60's, 70's etc that can only go now and again, and now they'll be stopped from going to see something they love and have supported for years.

You can't but sympathise with that, no matter how good it feels to see Roman's balls clamped.
